what's your favorite "that's out of character they must be really sick" tip-off? i think mine has got to be "uncharacteristically quiet" but "unusually late" is also really good.

i dont know how taako got pigeonholed as the bottles up their feelings twin when taako after reaching a certain point of stress will just start shouting an emotional monologue about how upset he is, and lup was in love with someone she saw on a daily basis for several decades before saying anything about it and got lost in a cave for years because she didnt want to tell anyone about an extremely dangerous plan she made that concerned the fate of the entire world, for which her backup plan seemed to be "itll be fine dont even worry about it"

You know you've fucked up when you go to a doctor and the thing you have wrong with you has been named after an occupation that isn't a thing anymore. Like imagine a doctor looking at you and going "yeah you've got ox-drawn ploughman's disease. We don't even test for that anymore. Yeah the reason you've never heard of it is because the last known case was in 1927 and happened to some guy who was like 98 years old and didn't believe in modern medicine of the time. What the fuck have you been up to."

I am obsessed with strong Whumpees who can hold their own, mow through Whumper's henchmen, but meet their match in Whumper himself.

With Whumper leaning against the wall, arms crossed, shaking his head, watching how his useless men get annihilated. He pushes off from the wall, literally steps over the carnage. Whumpee meets him head-on as just another pawn to put in the ground. But the fight is over in seconds.

If it's their first meeting, Whumpee is in shock that they didn't just lose, they lost bad.

And so the second time, after wiping the floor with some side characters, Whumper steps onto the scene and Whumpee just blanches :) Falls back a step :) The beating from last time carved into their bones :) Leading to so much delicious angst.

Bonus if they're equally matched or Whumpee is stronger, but Whumper knows exactly how to exploit a weakness (Caretaker).

✨ magical healing ✨ that’s necessary but so horrifically painful.

it pulls the character from a dead faint. they arch off the bed/floor, they’re screaming, they have to be held down and when it’s finally done they go completely limp again.

everyone’s relieved it’s over but it’s not a perfect fix. magic can seal a wound, stop the bleeding—but it doesn’t replace the lost blood, heal the wounds that aren’t physical. it’s a band-aid at best.

the character still has a long road to recovery, just floating there, in and out of consciousness, the friends/found fam/team alternates sitting by their bedside waiting for them to come back.

then, when they do wake up, they’re disoriented, dizzy, unsteady. confused by their already scarred over wound. maybe they wake up fully when no one is around and try to get up too fast and end up in a heap on the floor—you know the drill. so much whumpy potential.

Little whump detail that I love: at the beginning of a torture session when Whumpee is first chained or tied up, you see them wrap their hands around to hold the length of the rope or chain.

But afterwards when they’ve been through hours and hours of agony, you see their hands now listlessly hanging in their shackles. Bearing Whumpee’s weight, limp and weak.

It shows a Whumpee entering the ordeal being in control or defiant, but ending up losing all of that and having broken their composure. So much so that they don’t have the ability or the strength to posture anymore.

A character sustaining self-inflicted injuries in their escape (or attempt(s) there-of)- rope-burns from working free of bonds; a wrenched or dislocated shoulder from struggling so hard against restraints; twisting an ankle or breaking a leg climbing out a window or dropping over a wall; lacerations and embedded glass from smashing a window; torn nails and abraded fingers from scrabbling at a rough surface; scrapes and bruises from worming their way through a very tight passage; strained muscles from lifting/forcing a great weight; utter exhaustion from a long trek/ordeal...

A character who has screamed so loudly they've blown out their voice- unrestrained sustained screaming and screaming and screaming with pain such that something just breaks in the back of their throat and their voice just snaps and is suddenly ragged and raw and fractured, their vocal cords stripped and strained beyond their limits.

A character caught up/tangled in something that's not really restraining them, per se, but that hurts to attempt to get free from- barbed wire; thorny brambles; electric fence; iron or silver in a fantasy setting...

A character is delirious, semiconscious- eyes roaming the room, glazed with fever, seeing something but not really fully there- trapped in whatever nightmares their mind has conjured for them that have them whimpering as their worried companion presses another damp cloth to their pulse-points and tries to soothe them with their voice until, finally, something penetrates their haze and the fevered character's eyes lock onto their companion's with a glimmer of lucidity.

A character jolts awake from a nightmare, sweat-drenched and panting, wildly scanning the room until they catch sight of their companion sat reading in a comfortable armchair across the room. As soon as they catch their eyes, which crinkle with their warmly reassuring smile, the panicked character sags back into their pillows with a rush of relief, instantly feeling safe and calmer.

One character clutches another protectively close, the other's face pressed into the crook of their neck, shielding that character's view and muffling their distressed noises, as the first character scowls over the top of their head, directing a death-glare toward anyone who so much as thinks about harming another hair on that head, all but snarling like a dog jealously guarding its food with possessive defense for the character cradled in their arms.
