Ian Cooper: TDD, where did it all go wrong | Since Kent Beck wrote the book on TDD in 2002 a lot of words have been dedicated to the subject. But many of them propogated misunderstandings of Kent's original rules so that TDD practice bears little resemblance to Kent's original ideas. Key misunderstandings around what do I test, what is a unit test, and what is the 'public interface' have led to test suites that are brittle, hard to read, and do not support easy refactoring. In this talk we re-discover Kent's original proposition, discover where key misunderstandings occured and look at a better approach to TDD that supports sofware development instead of impeding it. Be prepared from some sacred cows to be slaughtered and fewer but better tests to be written,

New World Summit: Stateless State. Dilar Dirik (Kurdish Women's Movement) | Stateless Democracy: How the Kurdish Women Movement Liberated Democracy from the State Kurdish Women's Movement Dilar Dirik Chaired by: Maria Hlavajova (BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht) Dilar Dirik is an activist of the Kurdish Women’s Movement and a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department of the University of Cambridge. Her work examines the role of women in the Kurdish liberation movement, by comparing the ways in which the commitment to gender equality of different Kurdish parties is related to their stance on institutions of power. This lecture addresses the role of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in emancipating the project of national liberation within Kurdistan. Dirik will specifically address how the Kurdish Women’s Movement opposes the violence of states, but also that of male patriarchal domination. Understanding the overarching systematic oppression of society as perpetuated by the capitalist, nation-state-oriented, dominant world order, has brought the Kurdish Women’s Movement in opposition of the concept of the state. Here, the state is seen as a replication of patriarchal relations, which they believe can only be undermined through principled gender equality in radical democratic confederalism beyond power, nationalism and the state. The New World Summit: Stateless State took place at the Royal Flemish Theater in Brussels, Belgium, 19-21 September 2014

99D_FINAL_TOC_TRLR_DLVRY_March10 | Description and note from Tim Ferriss: “I felt like I went through 15 years of psychological therapy in one night.” — Actual patient featured in “Trip of Compassion” I first watched “Trip of Compassion” about six months ago, when I was sent a link to a private video. The film had been broadcast once on Israeli television, but it wasn’t distributed or available anywhere else. This documentary affected me so deeply (and immediately) that I flew to Tel Aviv, met the filmmakers, and offered to help launch the film digitally worldwide for free. Everything I am doing for this film is 100% pro bono, and all proceeds go to the filmmakers. Why am I doing this, and why is this film so exciting to me? Tens of millions of people worldwide suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Millions more have suffered from emotional and physical abuse but never get diagnosed. I would put myself in the latter category for reasons I’ll explain another time. “Trip of Compassion” documents one unusual approach to healing trauma that might astonish you, an innovative treatment involving the psychoactive drug MDMA (commonly known as “ecstasy”). As you will see firsthand, if the therapy is well designed, true rebirth and transformation can happen in a matter of weeks and not years. If you’ve ever felt held back, felt defective in some way, or felt that you’re not living up to your full potential, this film will give you hope. This is also the first feature documentary to show actual therapy session footage (to our knowledge), to which the patients consented because of the incredible results they experienced. Filmed at the Beer Yaakov Mental Health Center in Israel, “Trip of Compassion” provides a rare glimpse into a treatment process that can restore optimism and even the will to live. Thank you for watching this film and, if you find it as powerful as I did, thank you for sharing it. *** In addition to helping launch this movie, I am supporting broader access to MDMA-assisted therapy in the USA and elsewhere by donating to MAPS.org, a non-profit dedicated to making this treatment available to those who need it (e.g., phase 3 trials, regulatory work, scholarships for low-income patients). If you also decide that this work is important, please consider visiting MAPS.org to donate. NOTE: Be sure to specify the following in the donation form (there is a field for this, as they have many initiatives): “Funds are restricted to MDMA phase 3 trials.” *** Thank you so much for reading this far. I couldn’t be more excited to share this film. And remember as you watch: this is possible now. To quote William Gibson, “The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.” Let’s help make this treatment more evenly distributed. More to come, Tim ### Trip of Compassion Directed and written by: Gil Karni Produced by: Zafrir Kochanovsky, Miri Ezra Trailer by 99designs (www.99designs.com/tim)

Rams - Official Trailer | "Rams" is the new documentary from Gary Hustwit (Helvetica) about legendary designer Dieter Rams. For over fifty years, Rams has left an indelible mark on the field of product design with his iconic work at Braun and Vitsoe, and his influence on Apple. So at 86 years old, why does he now regret being a designer? RAMS is a design documentary, but it’s also a rumination on consumerism, sustainability, and the future of design. Dieter's philosophy is about more than just design, it’s about a way to live. The film also features an original score by pioneering musician Brian Eno. "Rams" is screening at special events worldwide this Fall, and will be released digitally in December 2018. More info and teasers from the film at https://ift.tt/2otknZG

Cyclo Knitter by George Barratt-Jones | I decided on making waiting for your train in the winter more enjoyable. By making a man-powered machine that creates scarfs in 5 minutes. Imagine Its the midst of winter. You are cold and boared waiting for your train at the station. This pedal powered machine gets you warm by moving, you are making something while you wait and in the end you are left with a free scarf! That you can decide to keep yourself or give to someone who needs it more. Its all about spreading joy and making those boring moments more fun. Today I’ll showcase a workflow I’ve been working on where I output data from QGIS and render it in 3D with Blender. I’ve used it for graphically visualising analysis output, and this post will first show examples of this, followed by a run through of the workflow.

Wairarapa House | Ross Stevens
Ross Stevens’ built a beautiful home in the Wairarapa, a short distance from Wellington, New Zealand. He is a designer of high end audio and a lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington. I had the pleasure of working as a research assistant looking at the future of marine biology and its relationship with 3d printing. He has always looked at sustainability and using materials that no other people would find ‘value’ in. He has always looked at the beauty of time and how something can start out aesthetically pleasing and become more stunning over the years.

Great mix! Love this!
"Consider again that dot. That’s here, that’s home, that’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines… every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

Here’s a thing I’ve had around in my head for a while!
Okay, so I’m pretty sure that by now everyone at least is aware of Steampunk, with it’s completely awesome Victorian sci-fi aesthetic. But what I want to see is Solarpunk – a plausible near-future sci-fi genre, which I like to imagine as based on updated Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Edwardian aesthetics, combined with a green and renewable energy movement to create a world in which children grow up being taught about building electronic tech as well as food gardening and other skills, and people have come back around to appreciating artisans and craftspeople, from stonemasons and smithies, to dress makers and jewelers, and everyone in between. A balance of sustainable energy-powered tech, environmental cities, and wicked cool aesthetics.
A lot of people seem to share a vision of futuristic tech and architecture that looks a lot like an ipod – smooth and geometrical and white. Which imo is a little boring and sterile, which is why I picked out an Art Nouveau aesthetic for this.
With energy costs at a low, I like to imagine people being more inclined to focus their expendable income on the arts!
Aesthetically my vision of solarpunk is very similar to steampunk, but with electronic technology, and an Art Nouveau veneer.
So here are some buzz words~
Natural colors! Art Nouveau! Handcrafted wares! Tailors and dressmakers! Streetcars! Airships! Stained glass window solar panels!!! Education in tech and food growing! Less corporate capitalism, and more small businesses! Solar rooftops and roadways! Communal greenhouses on top of apartments! Electric cars with old-fashioned looks! No-cars-allowed walkways lined with independent shops! Renewable energy-powered Art Nouveau-styled tech life!
Can you imagine how pretty it would be to have stained glass windows everywhere that are actually solar panels? The tech is already headed in that direction! Or how about wide-brim hats, or parasols that are topped with discreet solar panel tech incorporated into the design, with ports you can stick your phone charger in to?

My first attempt at an architectural model. Turned out quite nice. Other than the fact that I was more than violent while cleaning up the supports, I would say that it turned out alright.
