Fuck. Yes.
on the topic of rewriting racist d&d narratives
it takes work, yes!
it’s worth it. for both you and your players, but especially for new players who can see the game in different ways than you
examples I’ve written that you should feel free to use:
-orcs: rather than give in to the weird “tribal savages who fight all the time,” consider connecting orcs and their inate strength/constitution to the earth. in my most recent campaign setting, orcs are descended from a human champion who bested an earth primordial; the primordial, impressed with their strength, blessed them and their descendents with powerful tusks and a greater constitution.
-drow: instead of the entire drow narrative being “they’re dark skinned and bad because they betrayed the fair skinned elves and their gods,” consider playing up their connection to spiders. perhaps they worshiped a spider God who gave them the ability to blend into their darkened surroundings. if you’re married to their current aesthetic appearance, take care to present multiple drow societies that have different outlooks; not a homogenous race of black skinned slavers. consider pigmentless drow, who’ve lost all skin color because they never see the light of day. drow who use echolocation? distancing your drow from the bad connotations carried by the current zeitgeist is a useful endeavor
-include. colored. elves. in. your. game
-drop the ‘tribal’ aesthetic and the connotations that goblins and other monstrous races have. it’s lazy
-focus less on race and more on societies; a society can be evil or good, but a race cannot
-consider that fantasy races have no reason to conform to any gendered structures (especially our current human binary). dwarvish societies who express their varied and fluid genders through beard braiding. elvish societies who reproduce asexually. don’t limit yourself to what you can relate to from a 21st century human perspective
it takes a bit of elbow grease to decolonize your d&d, and the process is never done, but in my own experience, it’s only ever lead to more innovative and engaging experiences!

This and the follow up episode are so good!  Really excellent stories and discussions about mental health.  Wish I had this when I was at my worst.
Jack and Daniel talk about mental health, and their personal histories of mental illness. This show discusses depression, anxiety, self harm and suicide. You have been warned! The show notes here…
This week’s Mental Health special has been having amazing feedback, thank you so much to everyone who has listened and shared and let us know their feelings about it! If you haven’t had a chance to listen yet, don’t miss out! xxx

Angry rant #14: Zoos
Fuck zoos.  Fuck the profiteering from captured and enslaved nonhuman animals.  Zoos are no better than slaughterhouses, especially given what just happened at Copenhagen.  The gratuitous voyeurism that zoos encourage and thrive on feeds our anthropocentric worldview, and lets us justify our on going oppression and control of other species.  Zoos say they have a role to play in conservation and education: they teach children that other animals are ours to use, and conserve that opinion to make a profit.  Marius was not a special case.  He was brought into the world to make money, and he was killed to make money; Copenhagen Zoo allowed people to watch his execution, and dismemberment - I doubt they did that for free.  Zoos breed, feed, and kill thousands of animals, for public enjoyment, just like animal agriculture does.  The only difference between the two industries is which sense they satisfy.

Flash Fiction: Anti-Love
It was 90s Night. Again.  Nick sat on the wobbly bar chair, nursing his trendy microbrew, while around him his tight-shirt wearing, heavily-moustached clones and their girlfriends danced ironically to Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’, pausing to yell the only word they knew from the chorus: “Hey!”
Nick took a sip of his beer, straining it through his thick, normally well-groomed facial hair.  It was warm and flat.  “Like me”, he thought morosely.  He took a beaten notebook out of the breast pocket of his paisley shirt, set it down on the soggy table, and wrote, “I am warm and flat.” He paused, and then continued on the next line, “Like beer.”  He sighed and finally put the notebook away on the fourth attempt, smearing bar table slops onto his shirt from his left shoulder down.  He could feel it soaking through the tight fabric, staining the hairs on his chest with that smell known by bartenders everywhere as “Sunday Morning”.  Nick sat in quiet thought for a moment, then reached a decision.  He’d had enough.  He’d had enough beer, sure, and he’d had enough ironic drunk hipster foolery, certainly, but mostly he’d had enough of her.  Her silent treatment, her rejecting his calls, her total and utter refusal to even look at him.  She’d moved back in with her parents, and that wasn’t far away.
Nick rockily stood.  He swayed a little as the alcohol in his bladder readjusted to its new position.  Decision number two had been made.  He weaved through the bar, his eyes fixed on the exit sign, and broke out into the night air.  After pausing to orient himself in the sudden brightness of streetlights, kebab shops, and traffic, Nick turned left and started walking.  He would deal with her then he would look after his bladder.
After several minutes, or maybe an hour, Nick was lost.  He wasn’t sure how, but he didn’t recognise the street he was on, and his last memory was of leaving the bar.  His bladder ached to be emptied.  Desperately, and in a slightly more sober state, he wandered further along the dark street, looking for a discrete place to gain some relief. A few more minutes, and none had presented themselves to him.  He stopped under a streetlight and looked at the house on the opposite side of the street.  It looked familiar.  Had he been there before?  There was a low, wrought iron fence along the front, with rose bushed behind it.  Nick crossed the street and gazed at the house.  He’d definitely been there before.  But when?
An uncomfortable feeling began in his pants. A wetness not normally felt by twenty-something-year-old men.  In an effort to prevent itself exploding, his bladder had made its own mind up and started unloading excess liquid.  Nick hastily unzipped his jeans, and let go on the fence in front of him.  It made an interesting noise, splashing against the metal.  The dog who lived at the house thought so too, and came to investigate.  Seeing Nick the dog began to bark.  Loudly.  A light in a second story window turned on, and a shadow crossed it.  Nick tried to calm the dog down.  He lent over the fence to show the dog his hand, “I’m friendly, little buddy.”  The dog backed off, but was still barking.  Still with urine splashing on the fence, Nick lent even further towards the dog, who leapt at Nick’s hand, grabbing his shirt sleeve, and pulled Nick over the fence.
Nick landed on his back on wet grass, pubic hair caught in his zipper, the dog growling at tugging at his sleeve.  The front door of the house opened as lights illuminated the lawn.  “Geodie, enough!” The dog let go at the sound of the woman’s voice.  It was a voice Nick knew. Struggling to stand up, he said, “Julie?  Listen, I’ve had enough.  This isn’t working, I’m leaving you.” And he sighed.  It felt good to get it out.
Julie, standing in the light spilling from the front door, looked angrily at Nick. “I dumped you three weeks ago, you idiot.  Get over it!” Word count: 688

Dystopian worlds have become very popular lately. Whether it is Revolution, Falling Skies, The Walking Dead or Defiance, the one thing they all have in common is straight, cisgender, able bodied White male leadership. This suggests that at the end of the day, no matter the circumstance White masculinity represents authority, logic, safety, and intelligence. People of colour and women are often relegated to side characters who week after week submit to this authority and often times appear to be grateful for it. It is no accident that the White male is so revered in dystopians. It plays upon the idea that White straight masculinity is a declining power because of resistance by women, people of colour and of course GLBT people. It suggests that there will come a time when nature will correct itself and once again White men will rule the world, as though that is not the current situation and further; the world will be grateful for it.

WEAK give me dystopias where marginalized people thrive because they have more experience living with fear and the threat of violence give me dystopias where double conciousness becomes even more of a valuable survival skill give me dystopias where cis white able bodied men die sooner and in greater numbers survival in nightmarsish societies where you are the bottom of the food chain is not something that has or ever will belong to straight cis …able bodied white men straight white abled cis masculinity is not psychologically geared for survival
ho shiiiiiiiit gimme gimme gimme post-apocalyptic worlds in which zombies only hunt humans demonstrating certain behavioral cues and releasing pheromones that convey aggression (like how horses can “sense” untrained riders). so that the survivors are the code-switchers, the disenfranchised who’ve learned from an early age how to modify their behavior to suit a hostile social space.
{the zombies are preferable to the cisgender able-bodied straight white men, bc the zombies actually leave you alone}

hey remember how night of the living dead almost 50 years ago had an african american man as the main character. but now that dystopia has hit the mainstream big time, out come the white dudes
