My partner and I have been talking about this for a while, and today I was reminded of it because of a rumor that TS 11 will come out soon (hope springs eternal). I made TS 11 bingo cards.

So lately I’ve been seeing stuff on the internet about how Taylor “isn’t even that talented” and my partner told me about a conversation some friends of friends were having about how she’s “just pretty and white.”  Without getting into the very complex and important topic of race in the music industry, this is just... obviously untrue?  Her peers certainly wouldn’t agree.  

So anyway, I made a list in no particular order of thirteen songs I think show her range.  It’s not a list of her best songs (how could you choose?), just some that show how incredibly versatile she is as a songwriter.

Ok, so Disney is going to remake The Aristocats, and someone suggested Taylor should play Marie.  Normally this is not the sort of thing I would care at all about, BUT the above picture is Marie’s most memorable quote.  And if there’s a better description of Taylor’s feuds I can’t think of one.  So I’m actually here for it.

In case you don’t know who Albern is, he’s the frontman for the Gorillaz.  You can be excused for not knowing who he is because the Gorillaz only have one song anyone remembers.

This is such a ridiculous claim.  Not only has Taylor written many of her songs alone, including an entire (amazing) album, but a lot of her best songs are strictly by her, including Dear John, Long Live, Lover, This Love, and No Body No Crime.    Even if we do accept that she’s just a co-writer, the idea that extremely talented musicians like Jack Antonoff, Max Martin, and Aaron Dessner would collaborate with her multiple times if she wasn’t contributing anything is ludicrous.

1.  Watching everything turn red in the video for “I Bet You Think About Me” made me think about this iconic outfit.

2.  I am very very into snakes, which are a tangential part of my research, and I actually have a cool snake necklace similar to this one.  While I am glad Taylor’s reputation is recovering, I am admittedly very sad we are no longer doing the snake theme.

For me a huge part of the reason the All Too Well video works is that Sadie looks SO YOUNG compared to the other two.  She’s an adult, but just barely, and it looks wrong seeing her with someone so much older.  In this picture Dylan and Taylor look like an age-appropriate couple.  

When All Too Well came out, it was hard for me to realize how young she was because a. I was a teenager myself and b. I already knew her face well, so she just looked like herself--I didn’t register her age.  But looking back at pictures of her from then, she was so young and this relationship was so exploitative.  

On a lighter, unrelated note, Taylor’s jacket is awesome.

My academic work is on the sea.  One of my best memories is living on a sailboat in the Aegean for a week or so.  My friends randomly send me pictures when they find sea creatures represented in art.  I have a 6′ x 4′ canvas I am filling with marine images.   I am wearing a jellyfish necklace at this very moment.

So yeah, I saw the fake cover and got so excited I almost cried.  When I realized it wasn’t real I did cry just a little.  :(

I do not know what it is called or what platform it is on.  It’s an excellent coincidence, though, because we are working our way through the songs on folklore.  It’s making me really appreciate cardigan, which I previously didn’t listen to much.
