there are certain things about huang renjun that only you know. sometimes, you wonder if it’s worth it.

renjun/reader

(n.) a boy wearing a yellow sweatshirt who, upon receiving his acceptance letter from his (your) dream college, used the spare key you gave him to wake you up at eight in the morning on the first day of your spring vacation to celebrate

“You can’t keep doing this,” you grumble, kicking at the pavement. A loose rock skitters across the concrete, dislodged by your movement, and comes to the stop at the wheels of Renjun’s bike. He had promised he wouldn’t bother you again before twelve in the afternoon - he had even pinky promised, which you had skeptically accepted - but apparently knocking on your door a minute after is fair game.

Renjun glances up from the lollipop he’s unwrapping to give you a curious look. “What do you mean?”

He even has the audacity to blink at you innocently, as if he hadn’t nearly slammed your calculus textbook shut on your hand earlier. Rubbing the side of your palm where the cover had grazed you, you level what you can only hope is an annoyed glare at his stupid face. In a few months, he will be off to college. It’s the only thought that keeps you from snatching the lollipop straight from his hand and telling him that you had been the one who broke his lamp last year.

“Just because you’re not in high school anymore,” you start heatedly, deliberately opening your bag of chips the second Renjun puts the lollipop in his mouth, “doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to bother me when I’m trying to do homework.”

“It’s not like you were doing anything,” Renjun points out, leaning out of reach when you swat at him. “Be real, [Name], when was the last time you did math homework without copying the answers straight from the back of the book?”

“Um, before you roped me into going out all the time?”

“So, never?”

You press your lips together, refusing to answer him. Instead, you point at the handle of his bike and ask, “Are you ever going to remove that?”

Some of the girls from your year had tied a farewell gift to his bike. Renjun had removed the balloons, at least, but it looks as if they had tied the ribbons too tightly for him to figure out how to untangle them from the handle. For whatever reason that you could never quite comprehend, Renjun was popular at school. You remember how often he would store chocolate in his locker before giving it away to his friends because his ran out of space; more often than not, he would share it with you on the roof.

“I’m giving the bike to Jisung,” Renjun says, as if that explains everything.

“Wow,” you say blandly. “What a brilliant idea. Almost like the time you bowled me off my chair.”

You say that as if it hadn’t just happened half an hour ago. As if to hammer in the point, you reach over and pull the lollipop straight from his mouth. Renjun makes a noise of protest, but he’s interrupted by you looping your arm through his and yanking him towards you.

“Huang Renjun,” you say. “You’re banned from whatever the fuck ‘angry cuddling’ is until you let me finish my math homework.”

He gapes at you before rolling his eyes, laughing. “Bet.”

Your eyes narrow. “Can’t wait until you have to buy me ramune.”

Renjun makes you promise to tell absolutely nobody that he had to go down to the corner store at two in the morning because he lost a bet with you; you don’t think it matters, because Zhong Chenle probably saw him on the other side of the cash register.
