when i say this about nisaac- a gay couple breaking up is not the same as condemning of homosexuality. the gay characters still show explicit lust and desire, gay rep isn’t *just* dating. showing a relationship be complex and have twists and turns is also rep, it’s okay to want the ship back, but it’s not homophobic. also, lgbtq rep doesn’t exist in a vacuum! i’ve LOVED what the show is doing with nisaac, it’s deep, it’s colorful, and it’s messy and real! not to mention casual rep on the show. could they have given them another kiss here and there? absolutely, but it’s not like they’re hiding the gay characters. idk, i just think it’s important to get the opinions of other gays too🤸♀️

i’m not really one for religious head canons bc i think they can spiral into unnecessary discourse but i do think they’re interesting :) have to chime in and say that elias was referencing something called an indulgence which is in fact an (old) practice of the catholic church where members of the faith, namely the wealthy, would pay for a contract as a fast pass to heaven absolving them of mortal sin after death (basically), this is very poor paraphrasing. as someone who grew up irish catholic i can personally see a lot of familiarities between hetty’s actions and the irish catholic way. namely shame which is so prevalent it’s often a joke😭. it is true that catholicism was very socially ostracized, a lot to do with the influx of immigrants that practiced it, but there were extremely wealthy catholic figures. the st. ann’s church that is in the neighborhood in ulster county that’s referenced on the show is also of the catholic denomination. i think the woodstones being catholic would add an interesting layer of social contention that maybe hetty had to frustratingly deal with when mingling with the other wealthy elite of new york. i’m not saying this is fact, but interesting to consider! religion is not something i consciously or consistently assign to her either way :)
Does anyone know what religion Hetty would be? I mean, she almost absolutely would have been *raised* religious even if she and Elias weren’t really churchgoers.
My best guess based on research so far is protestant, but there appears to be lots of different types of protestants that believe different things, and I’m not sure if the differences are important for Hetty’s characterization.
I do know she was not likely Catholic because the first surge of immigration to the US (w/irish catholics) was in the 1880s ish, and it doesn’t seem to have been common before that.
(i wasn’t raised religious and don’t really know anything about christianity besides the most basic stuff and what I learned from watching Good Omens, by the way)
(When I tried to look up these specifics I kept getting paywalled by academic articles)

i keep seeing flower slander on the tags and i fear some of the nuance of inherently flawed people stuck in literal purgatory is lost on some, i love her and gotta say something. “why does flower keep bringing it up?” it’s a sitcom. “well it’s not funny” 🤷🏻♀️ flowers an asshole just like the rest of them. literally in the nicest way, this might be the wrong show if you want them to learn and not- learn, regress, make a little more progress, retreat, etc. just because she’s sweet doesn’t mean she lacks flaws; often times a character’s strength is also their weakness. it makes sense that flower being so sex positive swings right back around into being judgmental; also there’s a difference between sex crazed and someone who really enjoys sex. i’m kinda rambling so this might not be the most cohesive post, but again, it’s a sitcom and that’s the american sitcom way to repeat jokes.
