If there's one thing the Carja are known for, it's the sweltering heat of their sun and Sundom!
Ranging as far south as Monument Valley and as far north as Arches National Park, the Sundom fields across much of modern day Utah and Arizona, and their lands reflect this geographic location.
Canyons, deserts, even a hot, humid jungle all point to a still sweltering southwest, and the flowing, breathable nature of Carja clothing aid in keeping cool while under the light of the desert sun.
Whether it be the towers of Meridian or the wilds of the Rustwash, carrying water is crucial to surviving in the shimmering Sundom!

New au idea: Quen-born Aloy.
GAIA chose the Nora to take Aloy because she knew they'd raise her no matter what. If the Quen still reside near their ELEUTHIA cradle, imagine an Aloy raised by the Quen.
Sure at first they thought it was just an abandoned child, perhaps one who's family got swept away by the yearly floods, but as she reaches maturity she's looking more and more like a certain Ancestor. If anything she'd probably be taken into the imperial family, perhaps end up akin to Ceo.

(Picture and Screenshot by me. Top: screenshot of Delicate Arch in the video game Horizon Zero Dawn. Bottom: Evening photo of the real life Delicate arch)
Carved into the Entrada and Curtis sandstone, Delicate arch towers over the modern landscape as well as the northern reaches of the Sundom.
In 2024, Delicate Arch is one of over 2,000 arches in Arches National Park. Standing 60 feet tall, it is a rewarding view at the end of a very strenuous hike.
In 3040, Delicate Arch can be found among the Sun-steps, west of Free Heap. Claimed by the 3rd Sun-King Sadahin, it's officially part of the Sundom, but is a common haunt for Oseram, including in the side-quest "Hammer and Steel" following after two young Oseram hunters.

When do you plan to post again? I'm in love with the concept for this blog, and so happy to make your acquaintance!
I'm so glad you're enjoying the idea! I do currently work in a national park, so transferring images from PS4 to a computer, then retrieving images and uploading them online is very difficult with almost no service (including wifi in park housing), but I'm happy to report that I have just uploaded a picture and have spend a lot of time organizing and uploading from my game, so more should come soon!

Happy International Dark Sky Week!
With only a few days before the North American total Solar Eclipse, take some time this week to appreciate the night sky and learn about how you too can see the night like Aloy!
Unfortunately, in our "Old Ones" world, light pollution has created a night sky not worth looking up at, with only a handful of stars visible and the milky way completely obscured for 80% of North America and Europe. In America, 40% of light is wasted by being directed into the night sky. Us Old Ones not only have lost the view the tribes of Zero Dawn have, but the same natural and cultural resource our ancestors have had since time immemorial. Stories, explorations, innovations have been lost in the blur of light pollution.
You can experience Gorgeous night skies like you find in Horizon in real life, and advocate for their protection! Parks across the world have earned Dark Sky Park certification, but even if you find a local park or dark place, with enough patience you too can see more stars than at home! And by using better lighting that is directed downwards, warmer in color, and only where needed, residents can even begin to see the milky way in their own backyard!

Welcome to Horizon-Ranger! An exploration into the world of Horizon Zero Dawn through the lens of National Park Service style posts.
As someone who works in the outdoor industry, I have quite some experience in NPS style interpretation, but also a wide breadth of knowledge about nature, cultures, and history to apply to thinks found in HZD! I'm a HUGE hzd fan with lots of know on the world so it just makes sense to blend my two interests together!
So whether it's tidbits about the culture of the Nora or a post about the Windgate sandstone of Meridian, I hope we all have fun and learn about the wild world of HZD and come to appreciate our own
