Final Body of Work for 3rd Year Fine Art Semester 1
Final body of work for 3rd year Fine Art Semester 1
This body of work focuses on the environment that surrounds us and the countless ways we observe it as individuals. Can we perceive the changes in our ecosystems in everyday routine? And does this subsequently make us more conscious of the choices we make in our environment?
The landscape is forever evolving and morphing itself into new beginnings. Discarding the old. The shifting and layered artificial forms in the works mirror the urban environment and reflect the notion of a changing time.
Bleak tones engulf the works, creating a hollow melancholy within and around them. The artworks share a cold atmosphere. It speaks of changes that are surrounding us, are they welcoming? Or Disheartening?
These pieces are built from collage beginnings, into layers of transparent paint and linear structures that run in and out of moving forms. The environment’s agency and potential in the world is always moving in a constant ebb and flow – This is the inspiration and catalyst of these artworks.
Several of the works presented have incorporated textural elements, exploring the use of laser cutting and sgraffito. This represents the concept of replacing and discarding. A man-made intervention in the natural landscape.
The works toy with the viewers perspective, shifting and breathing like the tectonic plates of the earth. They express a sense of open mindfulness and an empathetic attitude to the environment, who’s forms are ever changing through man’s influence in the world.

How do we perceive nature, do the things that look unnatural become signs of climate change or are they naturally occurring?

Artist Research - Chris Trueman & Bridget Riley
The layering of paint and screen print in these works is something I’d really like to look into. I think this would really help to get a very layered effect with the clean, precise aspect I am hoping for.
I started to look at Bridget Riley’s work. I fell in love with the beautiful precise shapes in lovely pastels and vibrant almost florescent colours. They stand out perfect amongst the very detailed intricate pattern.
I think Bridget Riley and Chris Trueman’s work are very similar in the way they are using optical illusions and colours intertwine and make very flowing works.
