Illuminate Evaluation
This project involved trying to light objects at dawn or at night (using different types of light). I made up a lighting plan before I started to shoot. I chose a swing set to photograph because I thought it would be different and interesting to do. I have a local park and it is safe at night. I also thought a swing set would be interesting to try and light.
My lighting plan involved a drawing of the swing set from a bird's eye view and showed where I was going to place the lights and the type of lights I was going to use. I used an LED panel light because it was able to light quite a lot of the swing set. The plan also included where I was going to stand when taking the photograph. I took the photograph from the back of the swing set where I had placed the light - I tried taking photographs from the front but then the panel light itself was visible in the shot.
I did more than one shoot because the first time I did the shoot the one image I submitted was out of focus. I think it was out of focus because I took the shot with the camera hand held and a fast shutter speed. I did a second shoot, using a tripod, but my SD card within the camera failed. So I had to do a third shoot - again using a tripod. I felt that the first shoot - apart from being out of focus - provided the best image. I felt this image was better lit and looked great. It was annoying that it was out of focus.
I am happy with my final image but I don't think it is my best. I did some editing to brighten the image slightly and also used a spot healing tool to remove some rubbish that was in shot, on the ground. I like how the image has captured the reflection of the light on the metal poles and the chains. I also like how there is a depth of field in the image because the background is out of focus and draws your eye to the swing set. There is also a nice contrast in colour between the red/purple of the ground and the green of the grass.
If I was going to do this shoot again I would definitely use a tripod and also save my images after shooting (in case the SD card was to fail).

Structure Evaluation
The brief for this project was to take two internal and three external photographs of a building. I chose to take photographs of my local church in Eaglesham because I like old architecture - I find it more interesting than modern architecture. I like the feel of the building and the detail, such as the wood panelling. Part of the brief was to take a photograph of the full building with the correct perspective and two other external photographs of parts of the outside.
Generally I am happy with the five images that I chose. However, some things didn't go so well. I had some difficulty arranging entry to the church - as I had to get permission from the priest and then it was difficult to track down the key holder to allow me entry (but as it was she actually lives on my street).
Some of the photos that I took were not in focus or too dark to use. Also some of the external photos were missing the top of the building - and missed some of the building's details. In addition, on my first shoot my SD card failed before I could get the images from it, so I had to go back and reshoot everything. Although, I felt my reshoot went better than my first shoot as I had more usable images the second time. I should have copied the photos from my SD card to another drive - I usually do this but didn't do it immediately after the firs shoot.
For the internal photos I used a combination of natural light and ambient light from the lights in the church. For the external shots I used natural daylight. All the photos were taken with a hand held camera - the outside shots would be difficult to take using a tripod as the church is built on a hill. I didn't use much post-editing for the shots - as I didn't have access to Photoshop at home. However, I feel that one shot (one of the outside ones) would have benefitted from editing - adjusting of the brightness for example. Also, as I didn't have Photoshop I had to ask for help from the printers to help me put my photos on the canvas.
On the positive side I feel that I managed to capture the different details, in and outside of the church. I like the colours in different points of the church and the details on the furniture, such as the chairs in the front part of the church. I think the five photos work well together. In particular I like the internal photos as they highlight the different patterns within the church - such as on the ceiling and also on the wood panelling of the pulpit.
If I was to reshoot this project I would choose the same building but would spend more time editing one of the photos using Photoshop. Also, if there had been better communication between myself and the people with responsibility for the church I feel I would have had more time to shoot the photographs.
