my grandad <3
throughout the current situation, i sadly lost my grandad which had halted the work that i was doing - it definitely set me back a lot, trying to grieve and console my family. it was a very hard few weeks trying to get through my project, but i knew that my grandad would have liked for me continue as he was always interested in my work and always pushed for me to work hard to do my best. and although my work had lost a few weeks, i wanted to keep pushing myself, and although i dont have the most work, i have put a lot thought into what i have research and the best way to work at it.
rest in peace ronnie miller, i love you forever x

fashion designing
when creating my designs for my clothes, i wanted to make sure that the inspiration i had used was evident in those designs, but i wanted it to look like my own work.
i wanted to stick within a limited colour palette, of a variation of pink shades as well as black and white because i think this not only works with the dolls but also with the y2k aesthetic
i wanted to stick within the shapes of the y2k aesthetic such as cropped tops, and including either flared trousers or tight skirts and shorts - often oversized sweaters or crop tops are quite popular

upcycling
- to upcycle is to recycle something in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item
- it has become quite somewhat of a trend in recent decades and has become quite popular on social media in recent years
- one youtuber in particular who i researched into was ‘lyndscorr diy’, in her videos she usually picks up the clothing beforehand and then transforms them on the video
- this idea then adds to the sustainable fashion movement which has become very popular in recent years, i am very interested as i do think it is very resourceful and creative because you can customise pieces however you want them

sustainable fashion
definition from wikipedia: sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. sustainable fashion concerns more than addressing fashion textiles or products.
i looked into the ‘19 agents of change campaign by stella mccartney who had used environmentalist activists in her campaign. i like the idea of how she has conducted her campaign and i like the inclusion of the environmentalist activists as this not only represents the brand well but the cause of their activism. the campaign is impressive with the use of the earth and it being conducted in nature.

thrifting
the trend of thrifting has become quite popular in the new society as it does fit with more recent trends, can sometimes involve looking vintage, idea of recycling clothes to be more sustainable.
one particular influencer ‘jenerationdiy’ does this trend quite often as well as lots of diy videos, showing over 2 million people how to customise and be creative, all whilst being sustainable. her most popular videos are looking at clothes that she has thrifted, showing people really do like this trend. showing that thrifting is still quite popular.

home-made dolls
jess has always been inspired by beautiful textiles. she began making dolls for her children in 1998 using cashmere sweaters and antique remnants. she carefully developed a line of signature handmade rag dolls based on her original doll design. each doll is cut to order in her northern california studio and always made using the finest materials. jess also collaborates with several designers, creating limited edition dolls for each season. although originally created for children, the dolls have a simple sophistication that has moved them into the women and lifestyle markets as well.

doll fashion style
- i really like the fashion style that is worn by bratz dolls as i do think that it is heavily influenced by the 90′s fashion movement, as the brand always followed pop culture trends very closely
- young girls felt more comfortable with these dolls as they could see more of themselves in these dolls because their was a variety of different dolls and they didnt all look the same
- the bratz aesthetic is inspiring people thrift their clothes more often which allows me to continue to use the idea of looking into sustainability and reworking old pieces as this is used highly in the aesthetic by people who are influenced by the bratz style

pattern samples
i have created patterns with the use of the barbie head, but of course, that is not my design but i did just want to use it as an idea because i thought it would look really well with the work that i am doing so far
i have been creating patterns with my own character outline instead of using the barbie head which i do like and i think it looks more interesting because at first it is not as recognisable and then viewer has to figure out what it is but then when it is explained as a doll, i think it works well, i have tried various colour palette with this pattern, but i do especially like the black and white ones or the mix of white with another colour as i think it works really well because it stands out.

making my own patterns
i would like my pattern to look inspired by the one made in this missguided x playboy collection as it is a design for a specific brand that i do like. i like the simplicity of their designs because it stands out with a simplistic colour paletter with some vibrant colours.i want to look at a simplistic colour palette because the main colour associated with barbie is pink and i would like to include that when creating my barbie patterns.

playboy x missguided
i came across this collection when researching for patterns, but had also been previously introduced to it prior to starting the project so i thought it would be a good addition. i really like the repetition of the pattern that is used and is consistent throughout the line. when i start to make my own patterns i would like to use this as inspiration in the future as i have been researching into this company. i want to use it as inspiration but not directly copy it. and i do want to use a monochromatic colour palette like this collection has included.

afflecks palace
- a collection of artistic and quirky stores with different aesthetics in manchester
- i enjoyed going here to do some research because of the different stores that were in this place
- stores: biggi bagga and star wars man who specialise in toys/collectibles
- look into the different stores to see what they sell
- afflecks palace is a collection of self-run businesses, create all their own merchandise and packaging
- in future if i do make my own merchandise or packaging, i would like to go back to ask some of the business owners about their inspiration and influencers on how they make packaging and merchandise

lolita style
- emerged during the 1980′s and over the decades, has increased in popularity in the western culture, making a cuteness revolution
- the fashion style has no actual sexual connotations linked to the novel by vladimir nabokov
- in japanese culture, lolita represents cuteness, elegance and modesty. this particular style is similar to old traditional/vintage dolls, which is why i do like this style
- the clothing worn makes them look innocent and child-like
- the people who are interested in this fashion style will use blurring filters on their images to get the doll look

vogue doll box
- introduced to this specific campaign at the start of my project
- combines dolls with very high end and luxury fashion, showing the dolls to be quite fashionable
- high level of detail by vogue when creating this campaign as it does look really similar to how toy boxes look when I have compared it to my actual toys at home, really accurate with all the details such as the accessories that are included on the images of the ‘doll boxes’
- good combination as I was looking to introduce more elements of fashion into my work

doll moodboard
i wanted to find some dolls that had been made in a different way to the barbie and bratz dolls as they as they are made out of plastic - so these dolls have been sculpted from things as fabric, clay and felt which makes them look handmade and a bit more rustic which i do like overall but i dont know what look to go for. i want to try testing making my own dolls, but maybe this could influence something further on in my project but i am not sure what the outcome would be.

ways to move the project forward
- vogue doll box: compare packaging of my folks and the dolls in the campaign. i wanted to look at doll boxes in toy stores. maybe look at increase in unrealistic beauty standards in young women, especially on social media
- articificiality and illusions: things appear real but they are actually fake. i could look back at work and ideas that I have already looked at or been interested in so far in my project
- fashion designing: possibly make apparel based on characters or designs that I can come up with. make some garments based on some dolls that I am interested in looking at and working from. using old materials to make some garments, like they are recycled dolls

group crit
- rethinking my project: looking at fashion inspiration to fit my tastes, due to covid. look at vogue campaign that looks at different luxury brands and doll boxes - them pretending to be dolls. fashion popular in japan such as lolita, maybe living dolls
- sustainability: popular in this society using recycled materials and the process up-cycling. researching into the process of making handmade dolls as this is process of being sustainable - i can combine both of these ideas by introducing my fashion illustrations
- fashion designing: try new fashion illustration techniques, practice on templates to build up the way they look.
