Thinking about Disco Elysium and the symbolism of the organ of love being the lungs instead of the heart. With the heart, love is something hidden at the core of you that you can't control, you can't make your own heart beat faster or louder, it just does. You can't hear someone else's heartbeat, unless you put your ear to their chest. It makes love something internal, invisible, involuntary. But with the lungs...a breath is SO visible, a chest rising and falling a breath creating air currents to blow out a candle or stoke a flame or cool a soup or warm your hands, or even just be felt on your skin. Breathing brings what's around you inside you and pushes what's inside you out, inhaling smells and pollution and disease and exhaling sometimes bad breath and sometimes pestilence, deeply connecting you with the atmosphere of your surroundings. It's uncontrolled in the sense that you don't have to always consciously breathe, but controllable in the sense you can decide to take a breath or hold your breath, but if you go without for too long it's unbearable, it burns, you burst with the need for it. Exerting yourself makes you breathe harder, makes you need the air more. And of course, your VOICE! Every word, every sound comes from the movement of air from your lungs, every single piece of spoken communication is because of your lungs (even a voiceless breath can be heard). It all turns love into something that connects the internal to the external and back again, flowing in and out, affecting the world and being affected by it, something so plain for others to see, to feel, to hear, something that gives us life and fuels our efforts, something we need more of when we struggle, something that is what all communication is from, something that is always there, even if momentarily out of mind, something ebbing and flowing and expanding and retracting and moving always moving, in, out, in, out. I think I like the love of the lungs more.
