The world around Hermione looked like something out of a H.G Wells novel. Bright streaks of color shoot pass her, the voices of her friends called out to each other, and pillars of black smoke were billowing out from all the burning trees into the sky. She leaned to the right to dodge a dark purple curse flying towards her and charged forward. Hermione fought her way through the battlefield, sending hexes in any direction she saw a mask, trying to find Harry.
Harry Potter is now twenty one and still hasn’t even made contact with Voldemort since the Ministry fiasco six years ago. Time was running out for Hermione and her friends, and they still needed to find the last Horcrux before Harry could even try to duel He Who Shall Not Be Named.
She kept running until the sounds of battle were quieted by the hoots of owls and the crunching of leaves under her feet became to loud for her battle worn eardrums. Tired and sore from years of fighting, Hermione fell against the tree closest to her and slid to the ground.
“Where are you, Harry?” She thought. She felt the tears brimming her eyes. “There’s too many of them…we need to get out...”
Hermione blinked back the tears and tried not to think about all the death over the past couple years. Seems that Dumbledore turned out to be a crazy old fool after what happened that night in the Astronomy Tower. Harry told her and Ron that Dumbledore knew Malfoy was tasked with killing him. Dumbledore did nothing to help Malfoy. Just stood by as a sixteen year old boy plotted his murder to save his family. Snape managed to spare him of the actual killing part, but not before Malfoy tried multiple times. Luckily nothing he tried was actually lethal. Hermione knew it wasn’t the lack of bravery or knowledge, Draco was top of his class right next to Hermione five years in a row. She was positive he didn’t want to kill Albus Dumbledore, even with his family on the line, he gave futile attempts.
Because of that, Hermione couldn’t help but wonder where Draco was and if he was okay. When Harry recounted everything leading up to Dumbledore’s death, Hermione felt her feelings toward her former bully start to change. She no longer saw Draco as a privileged, prejudice, pureblood but as a deeply scarred and disturbed man. Hermione went to find him and tell him she believed in him and that if he wanted, he could come with them, and help them defeat the man keeping his family hostage. When she found him more feelings than just pity and empathy started growing in her chest; she felt drawn towards him, like a moth to a flickering silver flame.
After a few minutes to think and catch her breath, she got back up and head back towards the sounds of destruction. Gripping her wand tightly in her right hand, she sprinted in the direction she last saw Ron and Fred, and hoped they were alright. Hermione found her way back to the battlefield, quickly dodging the shots of red, green, and orange flying all around her. She made her way back to where her, Ron and Harry apparated too. Not a single one of her friends were in sight, but she could hear their screams. Hermione gritted her teeth and started towards nearest scream.
“Stupefy!” Hermione screamed and a jet of bright orange light shot from her wand, hitting the masked death eater straight in the gut. She grabbed Ginny Weasley up off the ground and shoved a back-up wand from her holster into her hand quickly.
“Thank you, Mione.” Ginny clutched the wand tight and they both turned so they were back to back. Four masked death eaters were surrounding them and closing in. Hermione caught a glimpse of familiar blonde hair under the cloak of the masked wizard to her right and cursed under breath.
“Ginny you got them back there?” Hermione yells over her shoulder. Ginny moves from Hermione’s back and shoots her signature Bat-Bogey hex at the nearest death eater as a response. Causing him scream, grab his face and run awkwardly away. Ginny looks for her next target.
Meanwhile, Hermione dodged a Crucio and sent a stinging jinx back, hitting her attacker. The female death eater screamed out in pain and fell to the ground. Hermione heard a distinct popping sound and looked to her left. Seems like Ginny’s target got scared and bailed. Another pop came from in front of her and she turned back to see her attacker had bailed as well, leaving the girls alone a few yards from the next pair of wizards dueling.
Due to the adrenaline of battle, Ginny and Hermione spun around, wands pointed in front of them, and locked eyes. Both girls dropped their wands slightly and looked to their left toward a hooded figure slightly hidden by a tree. They looked back at each other for a brief moment of acknowledgment, then back in the direction he was. Malfoy wasn’t there. He was running back into battle, but burned into the tree was a Deathly Hallows symbol. Hermione heard a scoff next to her and turned to see Ginny looking at her bewildered.
“Tell your pet psycho to knock it off before he kills someone.” She said with admonition.
“I don’t think he’ll listen to me, Ginny.” Hermione said with narrowed eyes.
“You and I both know he will.” Ginny said and turned to leave to continue fighting. Hermione stood there watching as ten or more death eaters noticed Ginny and were headed her way.
“Now.” Ginny yelled over her shoulder and shot a Bombardo at the nearest tree, shattering it into a million pieces, and blowing the death eaters back several feet. “GO.”
Hermione gritted her teeth, whispered a silent ‘I love you’ to Ginny, and headed off in the direction Malfoy went…
