Is there anything the li's would say to their younger selves?
Thank you for the ask, and for your patience!! Without further ado, I have an answer for you from our lovely writers!
BB: * shaking their younger self by the shoulders * "Ugh, why the fuck do you hate yourself so much?"
* throws a list of assurances from MC/themselves that they compiled for their bad days* "I'm not fucking fixing this, you coward." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
watcher: * quietly hugs them, lets them cry * "I don't think we'll ever know what to say but… I think we're going to be okay."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Offkey: would rest a hand on her younger self's head and tell her, "You were just a kid. What happened will never be okay, but you'll learn to forgive yourself one day. And you'll find people (cough and corvids) who will help you turn that grief and pain into something beautiful. Something Tristan would be proud to see."
Movie Night
This story and accompanying art were won by Twitter user @Floramisuu
"Pretty, pretty please?" she clasped her hands in front of her, looking at her friend with her best pleading eyes, "I'll be your best friend!"
"Is that…" Rahim's brow furrowed, "Not what you are?"
"True," she hummed in consideration, "Oh! How about I make popcorn?"
"Please don't."
"Okay, good point," Alina laughed easily, "Burnt popcorn is not the kind of reward I'm going for. So you can pop any kind of popcorn you want and I'll pay for it! And other snacks, too!"
"You don't need to give me any popcorn, habibi," he said with a gentle smile, "An explanation of why you want me to watch a horror movie with you so badly would be enough."
"Because you're my best friend!" she said, like that somehow explained everything.
"I'm not sure what our friendship has to do with horror movies," he stared in confusion.
"Well, I love watching them, and spending time with you, so…" she shrugged, smiling cheerfully, "It just makes sense."
"I'm not sure that it does…"
"It does to me!" she pouted a bit, "Anyway… if I try to watch it alone, Chai'll try to scare me."
"He'll…" he shook his head, "No, actually, that makes sense."
"So you'll come over to watch the movie?" she said hopefully.
"If it means that much to you, I'll do it," he sighed, smiling softly even as he did.
"Yay! I've heard really good things about Safe Harbor, I promise it's going to be lots of fun!"
"I don't normally think of horror as fun…"
"Just trust me!" Alina huffed.
_______________________________________
"Sorry!" Alina said, unclamping her fingers from Rahim's arm after grabbing him and screaming for the umpteenth time in the past two hours.
"It's all right…" he answered, rubbing his ringing ear with a wince, "But I thought you liked horror movies?"
"I do!" she insisted, relaxing more as the credits started to roll.
"But you seem really scared," he frowned slightly in concern.
"Well, I am scared, but that's kind of what I like about it."
"Why would you like feeling scared?"
"It's… hard to explain," Alina looked off thoughtfully, "I guess when I'm afraid, there's not really any room for anything else. I'm so busy being freaked out about the curse or the serial killer or whatever else in the movie that the real world goes away for a while. Sometimes it's nice to be able to put away the worry or… sadness… or frustration that I'm dealing with. So yeah…"
"I see," Rahim answered after a pause, really considering what she said, "When you put it like that, I think I can understand the appeal of it."
"So what did you think?" she grinned, shucking off her seriousness, "Pretty intense, right?"
"I think… horror movies still aren't my thing, but for you, I'd watch another," he answered, smiling fondly, "Anytime."
"Awwww, Rahim," she threw her arms around him in a bearhug, "You're the best!"
"If you say so," he laughed, hugging her in return.
"I definitely do - I don't know what I'd do without you!"
They sat like that for a while, enjoying the companionable silence, until…
"...They're coming for you," an eerie voice murmured, shattering the quiet moment.
"Ack!" Alina shrieked (again) before narrowing her eyes at the sound of familiar, corvid laughter, "Chai, you absolute menace! That's not funny, not funny at all!"
"Funny bird! Funny bird! Chai is funny bird!" the bird in question cawed proudly, undeterred from his amusement in the slightest, as he flitted to the other side of the room.
"Ugh, well, I guess I should have expected that…" Alina rolled her eyes.
"Probably so."
"Hah, well… I'll consider myself lucky he only struck once that whole time."
"Definitely," Rahim agreed, "Especially given his usual antics."
"Hmm, suppose that means punishing him by not letting him have any of the popcorn I bought would be too harsh?"
"Well, I didn't say that," he chuckled as they headed into kitchen, leaving an indignantly squawking Chai to follow behind.
In regards to this restructuring, we have decided to no longer work with a writer for our studio. This change means several characters will no longer appear in Heartmoor projects, effective immediately.
The discontinued characters are:
-Xavier (X)
-Manon
-Gabriel
-Tink
-Nature
-Mai
-Ronnie
Since these characters played a large role in our Phantasia Jam project, we have decided to discontinue that project as well.
We apologize to those who have grown to care for these characters, but we want a clean start. We are thankful for your support and we can't wait to tell future stories in the Heartmoor spirit of creating a safe space for people who feel unseen. Do reach out if you have questions!
Update
Thank you for your patience, we know there are some unanswered asks. Currently, we're going through a restructuring of our studio, which has demanded our attention. Due to this, asks may take a moment to be answered, but we are working on them!
We are all very excited to get back to you, our supporters, and back to writing stories that help people find a safe space.
Thank you so much for the in-depth review! Appreciate that you took the time to play and go through everything! <3
Review of “Mythic Meetup” by Heartmoor Studios
Third game on my Otome Jam 2022 entry play list was Mythic Meetup by Heartmoor Studios.
TL:DR
It might feel like a tribute to another popular indie otome game at first, but it has a lot more to offer. Featuring some very likable, yet believably flawed characters, cute visuals and nice representation.
Story/Writing
Do you also go around clicking random chatroom invite links are end up in the weirdest places in the middle of the night? No? Just me?
Well, that's what happens to the main character - she (pronouns selectable) - a regular, ordinary (well, maybe not super-ordinary) human ends up in a chatroom filled with mythical creatures. Shenanigans and heart-breaking backstories occur as a result.
Each of the chat participants have a distinct writing style, which definitely makes the game come alive.
The main character is mainly a self-insert, with some little backstory pieces scattered throughout the story and a bit of a snarky personality in the non-choice parts of the story. And choices there are a galore - thankfully the developers have provided handy guides on the right ones to pick to end up in the hearts of the eligible mythics.
There are quite a few choices to make and the developers have provided a nifty guide on the right ones to pick for a happy ending with
It's very enjoyable to see representations on the ace/demi spectrum, including flirty ones.
I really loved the fact that the characters were friends in real life as well and appeared together in video calls and in each other's rooms. It definitely gave
A thing that initially threw me off was the chapters being called days. My initial thought was that the plot of the game is happening over the course of several days, but they're more of a series of snippets of what's happening over the course of a longer period of time. I feel like calling them chapters or weeks would have been more friendly.
Another small issue that I noticed is that while you can select your pronouns, some of the scenes default to other characters referring to the main character as they/them instead, but it might be intentional.
Art
The art is definitely cute. Each of the characters have a different background for their room and they match the characters very well.
As the resident memologist, I enjoyed the meme pictures that were scattered through the chat.
I especially liked the programming of the videochat sprites - there are little wobbly effects happening with their arms, which make them seem more alike. Ditto for mirroring effects.
Similarly a great shoutout to the CG programming - I know that under jam limits we work with a very limited set of VN assets and the ending CGs were utilized to the fullest with their panning and other effects.
Music and Voice Acting
There is an original soundtrack and it matches both the scenes and characters very well, without being overpowering and distracting. Everything loops seamlessly, there are relevant sound effects scattered through the game. I also liked the music room which was added in.
All of the videochats are fully voiced and it has good sound mixing. My favorite was Vera Tan's rendition of BestieBB, but honestly - they're all good.
A nice feature that's very, very easy to miss - if you click on the side character's profile and click on the little speaker icon if it's there - it's gonna play a line from them from a few random lines. It was very cute and helped to put a voice behind some of the chat avatars.
GUI/Usability
There is a cute custom GUI and I generally liked using it, especially all of the little bits and bobs that you could click to go to different screens and such. It really made the game feel very immersive.
After some fine-tuning I found the right text speed for me for the autoplay and just watched the chat go on. A little thing that I felt was missing with the autoplay system was a hard pause at the end of the chapter. Once or twice I found myself scrambling to reload saves because the last message of the chapter was quite long and the day change happened before I got to read it.
I'm usually an avid history reader and there were some overflow issues there.
The font size is pretty good if playing on large-screen devices and the font is quite readable for the chat. Increasing the font-size would have been nice for playing on devices with smaller screens (like the Steam Deck) though. Reading white text on yellow for the videochats did get a bit straining on my eyes, but I work with code all day, so they're pretty sensitive come evening when I have time to play games.
Playthrough notes - here be slight spoilers
As usual, I did a live-tweet thread of my biggest impressions.
I started my playthrough with OffKey and I enjoyed the resolution of her backstory.
Next I played BestieBB and they definitely are sharing my No. 1 spot in the rankings due to how much I was vibing with their route. I feel like the conflict was very believable and the resolution as well. To put it in the words of a friend:
Playing watcher hurt me. In a good, self reflective, I have content to talk with my therapist kind of way. I've definitely had the same kind of feelings as he has had in chatrooms throughout my whole life. And I especially loved how part of the conflict was internal and the issues were resolved partially by some very in-depth self reflection.
X's route in comparison was pure fun. I love how it brought the whole team together and the overall flirtiness of everything.
Overall I'm very glad I decided to play this game, will probably play the studio's O2A2 jam entry and can't wait to see what the devs put out next.
On the day of launch ish, maybe a few days after im not sure, i played mm and was on bb route. I was at the end of the route, part where bb refused to go to that con i think, and the game just freezes. Like there's no ending or anything, it just eventually stops working. Did i do something wrong? I havent tried to play it again, because im too lazy to replay the whole thing and id be pretty annoyed if i did and it resulted in the same thing, any idea on how i can fix this?
Hi!
So there were a lot of bugs in the initial build of the game. We have since released several updates that have fixed them. It'd be best to grab the newest update from the itch.io page here!
If you run into any more hugs in the new release, please let us know. There are also walkthroughs to get the romance ends for each character in the devlogs on the game page. Hope that helps!
Happy 1 year to Bloomic! It’s insane to see this anniversary passed. This game has been on of the biggest influences to my approach to game dev and Mythic is a love letter to that game. Thank you so much, robo, for trusting us with one of your babies. Not sure where I’d be right now if I had played that game and I mean that. Thank you, the BP team, and BP itself for being so inspirational. Looking forward to your future projects!
- Jay
Happy one year to BP. Have some thoughts I'm typing on my phone while I avoid my IRL job responsibilities.
I'm not interested in getting too repetitive, so let me quickly get a couple things out of the way that I've already said in a million other places:
1. The reception to BP has been quite the unexpected ride, and shockingly is still ongoing
2. I'm thrilled to see that BP helped people find their creativity in the same was that similar other media helped me back then
Yes, technically the anniversary of BP was on 06/30, but I was too busy downloading a bucket of otojam titles. It was a really impressive turn out this year -- nice job to everyone who participated, old or new devs alike. For the new devs, I hope you learned a lot from your experience and I know you'll only improve further. I certainly know BP taught me a lot.
Let's get into some of that, actually.
-------
LESSONS I LEARNED FROM DEVELOPING BP AND THE YEAR AFTER
1. Imperfection is sort of sick.
BP is by far NOT a perfect product. There's small bugs still lingering, a few typos, some odd characterizations, rushed plot beats, all of that. But by letting myself be at peace with that and ship it, I allowed myself the brain space to focus on other projects and not dwell eternally on hunting down issues and rewriting bogs of text. I still vividly remember the first few times I saw people streaming BP -- ohhhh how I hated BP back then. All I saw in the streams was every mistake I had let slip through. But as I kept watching more and more, I saw what people actually cared about -- the heart of the story and the sexiness of my BOYS!! So, I chilled out. It made me realize that it's okay to release something a bit imperfect, because I know my heart will still be heard.
2. Cringe is cool.
Don't be ashamed of what you are passionate about. Cringe culture is dead. If I had let cringe stop me over the past year, there's no way I would have released BP at all -- the premise of the game alone would have rocketed me to another dimension. I think most of the coolest games out there take something a chunk of people might call "cringe" and make it fucken rad as hell by injecting their whole ass self into the project and making it scream "this is me. this is me." Think like undertale, or pony island, or dream daddy, or monster prom. They're unique and engaging and I'm happy they exist.
3. Unfortunately, you do not live on Mars.
There's a lot of reasons this is unfortunate. Mars sunsets look really fucken eerie and cool, for example. And I'm 99.9% sure that if you dig down far enough under the surface, you'll probably find strange alien skeletons. But, more importantly, Mars has ~25 hours in a day -- and we only have 24. You have to sleep. You need to eat. If you have a day job, you need to make sure you are doing it to keep paying your bills. At one point, I got so lost in the sauce that I nearly checked myself into the ER from not eating/sleeping enough and having some spooky side effects. I had to force myself to stick to a regimen for eating/sleeping, and while it did slow down some parts of the xyx route development (and current Adonia development), I am in a way better spot than I would have been had I not made these deliberate choices. Manage your time, take care of your life, and don't lose sight of yourself.
4. You are not the reviews.
If this is especially your first time in the review rodeo where people are rating something you put your heart into, I salute you. I did not realize how hard it would be to see reviews when I started out. Like with the imperfections, I had strong depressive moments when someone left a less-than-favorable review. It was almost like, at first, that they were reviewing ME, because of how important this project was to me. But I learned to let it go and try to glean the small useful knowledge points from them and then turn to the happy reviews as chasers. People are free to like what they like and vice versa -- it doesn't mean your game is bad, or that you are incompetent, it's just not for them. Reviewers also, frankly, don't know what went on during development and why things ended up the way they did. You cannot humanly please everyone, and chasing that down is a recipe for disaster. Your game will reach the people it's meant to, and that's what matters.
4.5 ...This includes the positive reviews.
"But wait! I thought you said the positive reviews helped you?" They did. They still do. But it's like taking an ibuprofen after a headache, or getting high after a nasty day -- a temporary solution. If you live in the reviews and feedback, you'll find yourself trying to keep those exact comments coming and slip into a "do what the players want only" mindset. Don't do that. Keep yourself at the front -- this is your story. I've already accepted, for example, that a chunk of BP players will not like Adonia, and that's okay. It's another personal story, and I'm making it for me first. If I lose sight of that, I lose myself. Game dev is supposed to be fun, not a mimic of me trying to please my family.
5. Fame is only sometimes cool.
I've talked about this at length in private, but not really publicly. I mean, I've mentioned that the popularity of BP was overwhelming and unexpected, but not much about what it's like shifting from a fan in fan spaces to a known creator in fan spaces. I don't think I can make any genuine fan-to-fan connections in spaces where BP is known, for example -- admirers see you through rose-colored glasses, and when they crack, you crack with it. Because I was so involved in otome communities before all this, it sort of feels like a larger loss for me than it might for others. This will come across as humble bragging to some people ("oh noooo my game got so popular that I'm too well known and too many people respect meeeeee") but it really has been one of the hardest things for me to face over the last year. I miss the days where I was just a nobody online doing whacky shit for fun with only a few eyes on me, I genuinely do. But I've come to terms with what my online life is now, and for those of you about to go through something similar, godspeed and good luck. It'll be okay. I did eventually find ways to navigate in spaces where people didn't look at me like that, and I'm much happier now.
6. Diversity matters.
If I have one regret for BP, it's that I played everything too safe. The designs of the og 3 are very typical otoge -- for better or for worse. They were designed to be instantly likeable by most otoge players. Otoge has a large trend of having mostly light-skinned love interests, and BP is part of that bucket. I'm happy Xyx is in the game as a LI, but I could have done more. People want to see people who look like them in games, and I heard that from so many comments/reviews and took it to heart. Adonia is part of that process. Another thing I played too safe was the lack of explicitly LGBT content in the game -- sure, i have 2 he/theys and everyone is technically bisexual (or a lesbian), but it's never really played out or evidenced in game. Like, Quest never says, "my ex-boyfriend said..." or anything along those lines. This isn't to say every game has to be very gay, but it is to say that I actively worked around that to try to please all fronts. I was afraid of pushback from some hardcore otoge fans that I've seen go after other devs for daring to include those things more openly in their games -- take the DUFE review bombing, for example. But, like I said before, you can't please everyone and chasing that down to make a clean, completely inoffensive game is maddening and a waste of time. I'm doing my best to ignore those fears -- mad props to everyone else succeeding far better than me. You are an inspiration.
---------
That was a lot of rambling, but if you made it this far, thanks for reading some of the things I've learned. I learn something new with every day that passes, and I can't wait to see what lessons the development of Adonia will teach me. Godspeed to all of u as well on your creative journeys. You are stronger and more capable than you think.
Ayyye! Hope you enjoyed it! MM was definitely a love letter of sort to Bloomic!
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve found a fully functional Discord themed otome, I’d have two nickels. It isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Astrology you say? Hmm, I agree that Brooklyn would be a Taurus Sun. He seems rather level-headed, he enjoys the finer things, loves nature, and he’s gracious and creative - something that isn’t attributed to Taurus as often as it should be.
Calling all astrology people
From what you know about him, what sign is Brooklyn??
what kind of the resction the LI's would have if the caught the mc wearing their clothes?
Ah, this is always a fun one! Lots of scenes and scenarios popped into mind, so these may be just scenes rather than hcs this time. Warning that there are marked SFW and NSFW takes for each LI. Enjoy~
BestestBB
You’re hanging around in the living room with X as BB goes to grab drinks from the kitchen. You chat casually before you noticed a sly smile curve the man's lips."Alright, what are you over there thinking about, you deviant?"
"Deviant? Isn't that a little harsh? I was being entirely wholesome, thank you very much." "Uh huh. Out with it."
"Fine, fine. So bossy~. I was just thinking that BB has multiples of their hoodie for fox and human form - despite most of them being enchanted to fit whatever size the wearer is. Thought it might be cute if you two twin."
Cut to you immediately running to BB's room while X is cackling. BB hears and instantly comes to investigate.
"What the hell are you cackling about? And where's my part-"
BB chokes when she sees you in her jacket. They swear colorfully in Canto, blushing warmly as X laughs his ass off. You look worried.
“Did I...do something wrong? X said it be cute if we twin” BB throws X out before turning to you. “No, you...actually look pretty damn adorable. You didn’t do anything wrong. Come here, partner.” SFW: You spend the rest of the night curled up with her and snuggling.
NSFW: They do allow you to borrow clothes to do couple outfits - though that doesn’t stop them from attempting to steal your clothes in revenge. BB ends up getting stuck in the closet in mythic form. You have to soothe her poor ego with a boba run and lots of cuddles while they wear your favorite hoodie. If y’all heathens really thought- OffKey
Key’s been pretty busy recently after the performance of her student. In fact, they’d even done a series of shoutouts on social media advertising her services. As such, her workload has been heavy and she hasn’t been able to spend much time with you. You miss her dearly and drop by to see if she’s home. She isn’t and even Chai is oddly quiet. Your eye falls on an oversized shirt of hers with music notes on it. You pick up and hold it close. It smells just like her - a mix of rain and her favorite tea. An idea comes to mind. You text Key that you have a surprise for her before putting your plan into action.
She comes home to you curled up on her couch, petting Chai and showering him with affection. Her heart fills with warmth. “Raindrop? I wasn’t expecting you to be the surprise! What a lovely thing to come home to!” She crosses the room and hugs you tight, basking in the feeling of finally having you in her arms again. You sink into the hug. “Good to see you too - though that’s not my surprise.” She pulls back and looks at you in confusion before she notices the shirt you’re wearing.
“Is that...mine? Why are you wearing that, raindrop?” You flush and cast your eyes away. “Well, I missed you and wearing this made me feel a little closer to you.”
Cue steam coming out of her ears. “I-wha-huh?!”
SFW:
“My little r-raindrop... that’s just... too precious!” She tackles you onto the couch and starts smothering you in kisses. “I’ve missed you too. So, so much.” She snuggles close, peering at you with a lovestruck grin. “Best surprise ever.”
NSFW Same as above, but Key decides to return the favor.
You come back one day to find her splayed out in bed wearing their clothes and a playful smile, "How do you like my new look, raindrop?"
"Um, you look... it's... they look good on you."
"Yeah? I think I'll keep it.
"What if I want my clothes back?"
"Then you'll have to come and get them," she replies with a wink
watcher
Poor bb. He is not ready. watcher is just walking in after a long shift. He’s ready to eat, shower, and collapse on his bed, texting you just before he falls asleep. What he was unprepared for you to be sitting on the edge of said bed, wearing a familiar hoodie. You turn and smile at him, standing to greet him and giving him a full appreciation for how you’re dressed. He blushes furiously. “H-Habibi...is that my, um, hoodie?”
“It is!”
“May I ask why you’re, ah, wearing it? We could’ve gotten you one if you wanted to match.”
SFW
“Aww, but yours is more comfortable!” He coughed as his flush darkened before chuckling.
“Alright. Well, how about you keep that one and I’ll get another. In fact, let’s make a date of it.” He takes your hand and kisses the back of it before you two head out to the mall.
NSFW
“Yes~. Is there something wrong with that, darling?”
"No!" A little stunned at how fast he reacted he repeats, calmer this time, "No, no, you look stunning, habibi"
You walked up to him, placing your hands on his chest. You gaze up at him with a wicked smile. “Why, thank you. I wasn’t sure since this is the only thing I have on right now.”
His breath catches in his throat, then is exhaled shakily. “C-Come again?”
“You heard me. Or would you rather me show you?” You place your hand on the zipper.
He groans lowly. “Please don’t tempt me.”
“But th-”
“Behave, my love.” He turns to head for the kitchen. What he says next leaves you stunned and blushing.
“Besides, I prefer to save dessert for last.”
Professor X
You perk up when you hear X’s office/bedroom door close and his footsteps grow nearer. You stand to greet him. He grins at the sight of you before noticing what you’re wearing...which causes him to trip for a brief second.
You rush over to check on him. “Are you okay? Were you working too hard again?”
He coughs, face burning wildly as he notices his sweater you borrowed from him dip a little too low on your chest. He averts his eyes as he tries his best to save face. “Fine! I’m fine! Absolutely fine. Why wouldn’t I be?” He winces a bit as he notices how loud he is.
You raise a brow. “Um, you tripped.”
“Ah, so I did! Um, ah...uh...”
You watch as he flounders, then it dawns on you.
“You’re flustered~, aren’t you?”
His face lights up like a Christmas tree. “NO! I mean, no. W-What makes you say that?”
You grin wildly before testing a theory. You press yourself against him. He goes stock still as his eyes widen. He swallows audibly.
“You tripped because you saw I stole your sweater~.”
He groans. “No, I, um, I... fuck. Damn it, bunny.”
“Stop teasing me~!” He whines as you giggle.
“Why are you wearing my sweater anyways?”
SFW
“Well, I got cold and I didn’t have you to snuggle up to.” He laughs as he wraps his arms around you.
“Aww, I’m sorry. Did you want cuddles, little rabbit?”
“Yes!”
“Heh, fair enough. How about I cuddle you for the rest of the night?” You nod contently as he scoops you up and carries you to bed for hugs and a marathon of your favorite show.
NSFW
You press a kiss to his cheek. “Because...I missed you.” He shudders at the sulty nature of your voice and the earnestness hiding just underneath it.
“Missed...me?”
“Mmmhmm.” Is that your hand on his thigh? Oh, you’re definitely playing hardball. “I missed you so much that I just had to have your sweater. Smells just like the man I love~. Besides, I thought these would go just perfectly with them.
“What do yo- oh fuck me...” He couldn’t take his eyes off the thigh highs you were wearing.
“Like what you see~?”
“Bed. Now.” You jump up with a laugh.
“As you wish, sir.” You take off running with his steps quick behind you.
what's professorx opinion of the spider wolves of the second movie of croods? I think they are super adorable (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ
I had to check this out myself and zomg, they're precious.
Found out about them from a family friend
Curious enough that he watched both Croods movies
Thought they were adorable - if a tad goofy
Thinks combining spiders and wolves isn't a bad idea
