How to Prepare for Coronary Angioplasty?
Coronary Angioplasty Procedure
Coronary angiography is a minimally-invasive procedure used to diagnose the blockage in your arteries that are supposed to carry blood to the heart and other vital organs. If necessary, your cardiologist might perform angioplasty — a procedure where they open the clogged arteries with the help of a balloon catheter. This hollow instrument is directed toward the clogged blood vessels through the groin. The balloon is inflated to prop the artery wide open and a stent is placed in the target area to ensure that the arteries do not get blocked again.
That’s how coronary angioplasty works. It can be performed in an outpatient setting, although the doctor might ask you to stay for 24-48 hours. Coronary angioplasty is sometimes performed as an emergency treatment to unclog the clogged arteries. However, in most cases, a cardiologist schedules a date for angioplasty so that you can prepare for the treatment. You don’t have to worry about the preparation. Your surgeon will explain everything about the treatment, how it is performed, and how you can prepare. Still, if you are not sure about how to prepare, here are a few tips that may help.
Tell Your Doctor about Your Allergies and Medications
Your doctor will review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Ideally, anyone who’s fit for heart bypass surgery is also the right candidate for coronary angioplasty. Certain medicines might interfere with the results of the angioplasty, which is why it’s important that you discuss your health goals and the current medication with your doctor.
Your cardiologist will tell you if you should continue the medicines or stop them. Usually, the doctors ask you to stop taking aspirin and other blood-thinning medication before angioplasty. At this point, you must also tell the doctor about allergies, if you have any.
Ask for Food and Drink Restrictions
The team of healthcare specialists will give you detailed instructions regarding what to eat, when, and how much. As a general rule, patients are not allowed to eat anything 6-8 hours before angioplasty. It’s advisable that you follow the food instructions or your doctor might have to reschedule the treatment. These food instructions are to prevent any complications arising from anaesthesia. The same goes for medicines. If you are taking any approved medicine, make sure you do it with a few sips of water.
Do Not Smoke or Drink
Smoking and drinking can have a very serious impact on your health, in general. But, you must avoid them specifically if you have a scheduled coronary angioplasty. Avoid taking any drugs or alcohol at least a week before your angioplasty to avoid any complications.
Arrange Your Ride Home
If the doctor has performed angiography, they will allow you to leave the hospital within 2-3 hours of the procedure. However, if it’s performed in conjunction with angioplasty and stent placement, you may have to stay longer. Depending on the results and your health, the doctor might ask you to stay for 2-3 days. Ask a family member or a friend to be present in the hospital, so that they can take you back home afterward. Make sure you don’t drive after angioplasty. Though your doctor will give you these details, you must also take precautions. Driving must be avoided for a few days after angioplasty.
Do Not Panic
Angioplasty is a minimally invasive treatment plan. You will feel slight discomfort or an itching sensation as the doctor inserts the catheter into your groin, but that’s only for a short while. You will feel absolutely alright once they give you local anesthesia. You won’t feel anything for a few hours after the procedure. There’s nothing to worry about, as the doctor will give you a painkiller to ease the pain and discomfort. Just relax and follow your doctor’s instructions.

Coronary Angioplasty procedure
The procedure is performed using a stent or balloon. In coronary angioplasty stent, the doctor places a wire tube to stretch open the clogged arteries. These stents are filled with the liquid that keeps the coronary arteries open and ensures proper blood supply to your heart. Alternatively in Balloon coronary angioplasty, a balloon is inserted into the clogged artery and is inflated to open it. The doctor makes a small cut in your wrist or groin to insert a catheter, a thin tube into the arteries. They use x-rays to get this tube to the target artery. They inject a special dye into the blocked artery to get a clear picture of the blockage. They insert the balloon and inflate it inside the blocked artery so that the plaque is pushed against the wall and the blockage is cleared. The balloon can be used in conjunction with the stent to keep the blocked artery open after the balloon is deflated, or it can be used alone.
Here’s how coronary angioplasty is performed.
You are given local anesthesia so that you don’t feel any discomfort when the incision is made in your wrist, arm, or groin and the stent is placed. As mentioned earlier, the balloon is inflated inside the artery to push the fatty deposits against the wall and create sufficient space for the blood to flow freely to/from your heart. The balloon is then deflated, and the stent is placed in the affected artery to keep it open. The procedure might take anywhere between 1 and 2 hours (depending on the method used to treat your blocked arteries). Most people are given discharge the same day or 1-2 days after the procedure. The doctor will give you instructions regarding what to avoid. Usually, you are advised to avoid any strenuous exercises and physical practices that might put excess strain on your chest for a few weeks. You must also avoid driving for a few days following the treatment. Usually, coronary angioplasty is performed to treat chest pain from angina. However, it is also used as an emergency procedure for people who’ve suffered a heart attack. If you are diagnosed with a heart attack, you may have to stay in hospital for a couple of weeks after getting coronary angioplasty. The doctor will recommend a few medicines to prevent the risk of blood clots. You can resume your routine activities within a week after angioplasty. How long you have to stay in the hospital depends on your recovery period.
Is coronary angioplasty surgery Safe?
Coronary angioplasty doesn’t involve any major incision, so it’s mostly safe for older people. In fact, people above 65 years are usually recommended coronary angioplasty to reduce their risk of developing coronary heart diseases. It is a minimally invasive form of treatment. Although the procedure doesn’t involve any serious risks of complications, some patients might suffer from heavy bleeding around the incision, a stroke, or a heart attack after angioplasty. There is a risk of blood clot formation in your stent after angioplasty. You need to take aspirin and other blood-thinner medication to reduce the risk of blood clots. There is also a risk of the artery getting clogged again. Angioplasty might not work if you have several blocked arteries or the blockage is too severe to be treated without bypass surgery — an invasive procedure in which the doctor removes the blood vessels of healthy parts of your body and replaces the blocked arteries with them. Your age, the reason you are getting coronary angioplasty, and your health are a few factors that determine your risk of complications from this treatment.
How to Prepare for Coronary Angioplasty?
Coronary angioplasty is recommended for people suffering from angina, heart stroke, heart attack, and other coronary artery diseases. The doctor will perform a physical test, such as X-ray and blood tests, to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for the procedure. Before angioplasty, the doctor will perform an angiogram to get a clear picture of the blockage in the blood vessels leading to your heart. It will help them decide if the blockage can be treated with angioplasty or will you need bypass surgery. You must stop taking all types of blood-thinning medications, including aspirin, before angioplasty. Inform your doctor about any herbal supplements or other medications you are currently taking. Your doctor will ask you to avoid fluids and food a few hours before undergoing an angiogram. If you are currently taking any medication, make sure you take it with only a few sips of water. Do not take any medicine before getting your doctor’s approval. Ideally, the doctor asks you to stop taking medicines a few days before angioplasty. It’s also advisable to arrange for your transportation a day or two after angioplasty, as you won’t be able to drive immediately after the procedure.

WHAT IS EECP (ENHANCED EXTERNAL COUNTERPULSATION) TREATMENT?
WHAT IS EECP (ENHANCED EXTERNAL COUNTERPULSATION) TREATMENT? Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP), also known as Natural Bypass Therapy is a non-invasive FDA approved therapy for patients with angina (chest pain) and heart failure (low heart pumping). EECP is a non-surgical process in which large inflatable cuffs are tied over carves, thighs and buttocks region of the patient who is taking this treatment. At the time of diastole (heart’s relaxing time) these coughs are inflated and pushes the blood back to heart. It promotes coronary collateral growth so creating “Natural Bypass” and it improves blood circulation to heart muscles. Is EECP An Alternative To Heart Surgery? EECP is very helpful and effective treatment for the patients with blockages in heart arteries. EECP is advised to those patients who cannot undergo Bypass Surgery or Angioplasty or do not want any surgical treatment. After the EECP treatment of a patient is done, it naturally creates the collateral circulation and increases the blood flow in the coronary arteries and patient doesn’t require any surgical treatment. Is EECP Treatment Effective? EECP Treatment is medically proven, an US – FDA approved therapy for heart angina (cheat pain) and heart failure (low heart pumping). It is a very safe, effective and non – invasive treatment for patients with heart patients. Who are the candidates for EECP treatment? Patients whom Bypass or Angioplasty is advised but they do not want any surgical treatment Patients with chest pain or other symptoms after Bypass or Angioplasty. Heart failure patients with low LVEF (low heart pumping capacity). Patients with Cardiomyopathy. What Are The Benefits Of EECP Therapy? Increased oxygen rich blood supply to heart. Decrease in chest pain. Improved walking capacity. Increase in energy levels. Increased exercise duration. Less breathlessness symptoms. Angioplasty or Heart bypass Surgery
ANGIOPLASTY OR HEART BYPASS SURGERY, WHICH IS A BETTER CHOICE?
Heart Bypass surgery and Angioplasty both are the medical treatments which are used to treat blocked arteries carrying blood in the body. Arteries are the blood vessels that distributes oxygen rich blood in the entire body, right from the brain to toes. Over time, due to the formation of some substance called plaque in the inner walls of arteries, it gets blocked. Subsequently, blood flow to the body is reduced, and arteries gets blocked. And this can result as strokes or heart attacks.
WHAT IS ANGIOPLASTY?
Angioplasty is also known as balloon angioplasty. It is a procedure wherein a balloon-tipped catheter is guided to the blocked coronary artery through a long, thin tube. This balloon is then expanded to widen the narrowed artery and stent is placed in the clogged artery to reduce the risk of it getting narrowed and blocked again.
WHAT IS HEART BYPASS SURGERY?
In the process of Heart Bypass Surgery, a part of a healthy blood vessel is taken either from the individual’s leg, arms or chest and connect it above and below the blocked arteries in the heart to restore blood flow. As a result to this, the blood bypasses the blocked part of the blood vessel and flows to the heart.
WHY IS ANGIOPLASTY A BETTER CHOICE THAN HEART BYPASS SURGERY?
Angioplasty is a painless and cost effective treatment. Hospital stay for Angioplasty is only for 1-2 days and most of the patents can go to work within a week. For Angioplasty, cutting and opening of chest is not required and no blood loos take place. Under local anaesthesia, narrow catheter tube is inserted from hand or leg artery which reaches up to the arteries of heart and then stent is deployed and catheter is pulled back.
Compared to Angioplasty, Bypass surgery is very difficult, painful and costly procedure for the patient.
Bypass is a major surgery requiring cutting open the chest cavity under general anaesthesia. Significant blood loss happens during the surgery and many times blood transfusion is needed. There are chances of many complication during and after the surgery from stroke to death. After the surgery, patient feels the pain for many day and full recovery can take up to 12 weeks. Hence, Angioplasty is a much better choice than Bypass surgery.

What Is Silent Heart Attack? – Symptoms, Major Risk & Preventions.
Silent heart attack is emerging as new killer among middle age people. Few months back singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK was taken to the hospital in Kolkata where he was declared dead before admission and the cause of death was silent heart attack. Actor Siddharth Shukla and producer Raj Kaushal also passed in similar manner in recent past.
What is a heart attack?
Heart attack is the sudden cessation of blood flow to a heart artery due to clot formation, therefore depriving the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients and damaging the heart muscles.
What is a Silent Heart Attack?
A silent heart attack doesn’t show normal symptoms of heart attack such as severe chest pain or sweating.
In case of KK, he had symptoms of stomach ache and fatigue which he thought as acidity or indigestion tried to treat with self-medications.
Symptoms of heart attack
The usual symptoms of heart attack are severe chest pain, heart burn, severe sweating, pain in arm, jaw or back, feeling of fatigue and uneasiness or feeling like flu. Symptoms of heart attack may vary from person to person.
Major risk factors of heart attack:
Following are the major risk factors contributing towards heart disease, controlling risk factors reduces our risk of getting heart disease.
Genetic predisposition
Diabetes
Hypertension
High cholesterol
Obesity
Smoking / Alcohol
Sedentary lifestyle
Mental stress
Prevention of heart attack
For preventing heart attack one must control diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol with diet and medications if required.
If you are overweight then try to reduce weight and central obesity.
Stop smoking and alcohol as smoking causes narrowing and stiffening of arteries leading to heart disease.
Be active, do regular aerobic exercise under guidance of qualified trainer, do brisk walking for 30 – 45 minutes per day, avoid taking lift for 1 or 2 floors, try to use staircase instead.
Mental stress is taking heavy toll on our health. In today’s competitive world, stress has become integral part of our life. For reducing stress learn and practice Yoga and Meditation. Take some time out from your busy schedule for relaxation and recreation. Spend quality time with family and friend. Cultivate and follow some hobby.

Is EECP an Effective Alternative to Bypass Surgery?
The procedure involves a risk of infection, irregular heart rhythm, stroke, and a heart attack (in rare cases). In the EECP treatment in Mumbai, you lie on a table with blood pressure cuffs wrapped around both legs and the buttocks.
Enhanced External Counter pulsation (EECP) is an effective alternative to bypass surgery. Many studies have shown the numerous benefits of EECP for patients with angina and other heart conditions that cause severe chest pain and shortness of breath. When you are diagnosed with one or many blocked arteries (which are responsible for carrying blood back and forth between your heart and the vital organs), your cardiologist will most likely recommend a bypass surgery or coronary angioplasty, in which they place a stent in your heart to restore the blood flow.
While these may seem effective options, these invasive medical procedures come with their share of risks. That’s where EECP comes to your rescue. For patients who are too old to be considered for bypass surgery or those with a medical history that doesn’t make them eligible for an invasive procedure, EECP is a good alternative. It is a non-invasive treatment for angina and heart problems that might cause chest pain. The treatment is performed in an outpatient setting and is comparatively much safer than other invasive alternatives.
How is EECP Different from Bypass Surgery?
You must already be familiar with bypass surgery. It is an open-heart surgery where the healthy blood vessels from other parts of your body, such as legs and arms, are removed and placed below and above the blocked arteries in your chest to redirect blood flow to the heart. The procedure involves a risk of infection, irregular heart rhythm, stroke, and a heart attack (in rare cases). In the EECP treatment in Thane, you lie on a table with blood pressure cuffs wrapped around both legs and the buttocks. These are inflated and deflated following your heartbeats. These cuffs regulate blood flow and ensure proper blood and oxygen supply to your heart. As you lie on bed, these cuffs deflate and inflate constantly in such a way that the results are synced with the ECG (Electrocardiogram).
Benefits of EECP Therapy
EECP is a safe and risk-free treatment for patients with chest pain due to angina or blocked arteries. Here are a few reasons why EECP treatment is considered a better alternative to the invasive procedures.
It is risk-free. As there are no incisions made, the procedure prevents the risk of bleeding or infection.
It is cost-effective
Faster recovery due to fewer complications
It reduces the pain from angina or other medical conditions
The patient gets to return to normal lifestyle soon after the procedure
These are only to name a few. EECP therapy is a much more effective and safe option than the traditional bypass surgeries. It is a 35-hour session that’s completed in a 5 day course. After the completion of the therapy, the patient will experience a quick relief that lasts up to three years. Although EECP may not fix blocked arteries, it has shown to be very effective for patients with angina pain. It  ensures proper blood circulation to your heart and the rest of the organs, thus reducing the pain from angina and other heart diseases.

Why are people getting heart attack in gym during exercise?
Nowadays many people are getting heart attack in gym during exercise. Last year Kannada superstar Puneeth Rajkumar suffered a heart attack while exercising in gym and recently famous comedian, Raju Shrivastav suffered a heart attack while exercising on tread mill the gym.
To avoid any adverse outcome during exercise you need to exercise under an experienced workout / gym trainer. Beginners need to start exercising at low levels and should gradually increase the intensity over few weeks to reach to exercise targets. Do not over exercise, one should know their capacity and try not to follow other people blindly.
Exercise for 5 days a week and keep 2 days for rest and recovery.
While exercising you needs to drink sips of water in intervals if you are sweating a lot to keep yourself properly hydrated.
What Is Maximum & Target Heart Rate During Exercise?
During exercising on treadmill, one must understand your maximum heart rate and target heart rate for exercising. Usually maximum heart rate is calculated subtracting your age from 220. For example, if your age is 50 years then your maximum heart rate will be 220-50 = 170, so for a healthy person, maximum heart rate will be 170/min.
But we do not want to reach to our maximum heart rate while exercising, our target heart rate for exercising should be 60 to 80 % of maximum heart rate. So for 170 max heart rate, target heart rate should be between 102 to136.
Above calculations are for a healthy person with negative tread mill test. If a person’s tread mill test is positive than that person should exercises only under medical supervision.
Diet & Lifestyle Changes For A Healthy Heart
Apart from proper exercise, there are other lifestyle changes that one should follow for a healthy heart.
Diet: Eating foods high in fibers like fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts & seeds. Avoid non vegetarian foods, dairy product, sugar, refined and processed foods, bakery products and foods with saturated and trans-fats.
Stress management: In today’s competitive world, mental stress is taking heavy toll on people’s health. Take out some time from your busy schedule for rest and recreation, inculcate some hobbies, spend quality time with family and friends, and practice Yoga & meditation.
Proper sleep: In urban India people go to bed very late and most people are deprived of quality sleep. We need at least 6 hours of sound sleep for a healthy heart.
Stop smoking and alcohol intake: Smoking causes narrowing and hardening of blood vessels and causing hypertension and heart diseases apart from causing cancer. In some people, alcohol also causes hypertension that could lead to heart disease.
Other medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol also leads to heart disease and one must manage above conditions with lifestyle management and medication if required.
You can get EECP Treatment in Mumbai for surgery free heart care solutions.
