In Love with Ally Barker
In Love with Ally Barker is a lesbian love story and a brooding, psychological thril.  It strikes all the right notes to make an indie horror hit.  College aged Ally and Sara are neighbors who fall in love, and then Sara motivates Ally to seek violent revenge against an abuser in her life.  Coming-of-age, girl-next-door, revenge.  It’s a trip.  The emotional nuance, and the muddied moral drama, are portrayed elegantly by writer Stefan Meza and the directing Smellin brothers.

Chasing Monsters
Jeana McTabe and Jordan McTavish have made a beautiful documentary about a former Ontario superior court judge who now has Lewy Body Dementia, a form of Parkinson’s.  He experiences eery hallucinations as a consequence of his condition, and so he makes paintings to ease his mind.  He has become an ambassador for those of us suffering from Parkinson’s, and also provides a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Uprooting Addiction
Today’s featured films are on the theme of new looks at healing.  A fine example is a documentary called Uprooting Addiction that features the work of Hope Payson, a trauma and addiction expert.  It uses the image of tree roots to describe the effects of trauma, and the resulting methods of successful recovery from deeply complicated and interconnected individual psychological issues.  This documentary asserts that the social issues that create individuals who are addicted to toxic things are as interconnected and complex as the personal issues that compel individuals to return to the toxin they are attached to.  The healing methods that are being pioneered are shown to involve highly complicated and individual efforts that depend on the complex web of interconnections and mutual dependence that we all experience as humans.

This year’s Awareness Film Festival will be hosted on a fantastic platform, Filmocracy, in our Virtual Village! Just because there is a pandemic and social distancing, doesn’t mean that we are not hosting a creative social experience. As at every AFF, there will be numerous world premieres of films centering around themes of healing. All proceeds from the festival will go to Heal One World, a non-profit that offers holistic healing through yoga and acupuncture, et al, to all regardless of income.
Be sure to come and take advantage of the social experiences in our virtual village! There will be loads of fun group activities, like charades!, that will break the ice even through your computer’s screen.

Magical Paths Begging To Be Walked
Roads and paths pervade our literature, poetry, artwork, linguistic expressions and music. Even photographers can’t keep their eyes (and lenses) off of a beautiful road or path, which is why we collected this list of 28 amazing photos of paths.
Paths like these have a powerful grip on the human imagination – they can bring adventure, promise and change or solitude, peace and calm. There’s nothing like a walk down a beautiful path to clear your head – or to fill it with ideas!
I’ll leave you with an excellent quote from J. R. R. Tolkien’s works while you enjoy these images; “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.“
