okay, both are interesting points, but one thing i want to add is that the free state has the upper hand over the wintersea republic.

they know how fucked up the wintersea republic. they know how the wintersea republic treats cursed children, how they orchestrated the systematic killing of wunimals. they know how much the government is screwing the general population and other persecuted minorities in the wintersea republic. they know how the wintersea republic took over prosper, southlight, and far east sang with force. they know, and instead of attempting to help, they crack down on boarder control and hide.

we don't know much about the free state, only that xenophobia seems to a normalised part of their culture, (from flintlock and noelle using language like plague, republic scum, scummy, dirty, stinking, rotten, filthy, to francis assuming that every wintersea republican was a spy), but we do know that wunsoc is super powerful. gresham, the poorest borough doesn't seem to get any financial aid from the wunsoc or the government when they easily could, they place the highest importance in doing what's best for the society and not yourself, (+ the whole creepy cult thing with the brothers and sisters for life). WUNSOC HAS SO MUCH POWER AND THAT IS NOT GOOD!!!!

it's 2018, you've splint ink all over your school uniform and your moms beeping the car cause the bell for school is gonna go any minute. you freak out about how you can't find any change to go to the laundromat cause you spent your last ten pence on a freddo and you dither over stealing a quid from your brother and bunking math to go to the laundromat above the chippy. you end up wearing your p.e jumper over your checkered dress and sneak of to the changing rooms to swap your dress with the girl at the back of the class, (for three curly wurlys, two wham bars, a bag of pear drops and a handful of sherbet dip daps).

you don't realise it, but life is good.

everybody thinks it feels like a sharp angry cut across your face, but honestly, it's usually a throbbing, subtle bruise in the back of your head. it's seeing what you long for in the picture of every passerby, it's not being able to focus on anything but your hair or your nose or the way your clothes look on your body. it's wishing you could crawl into a hole and slowly die, it eats you out from the inside. it's just wishful thinking, wondering what it would be like to be that guy.
