This is just bc I am on a dostoevsky kick and so its all i can think about but mitya constantly on the verge of killing himself because he sees no escape from his family curse/cycle of abuse and violence and can see himself becoming his father and feels like its inevitable VS nick relapsing because he's becoming more and more like his mother and he sees this as inevitable after killing jeremiah and perpetuating the cycle of violence and revenge his family is embroiled in now culminating in his suicide attempt via self sacrifice at the dam only for proctor John to be like "like mother like son"
