This artwork of Pete appears in the Bokujou Monogatari Special Comic and is cited as the "SFC" version. To my knowledge, this is the only form this specific artwork has ever been published! It has not appeared in any manuals, guidebooks, art books, or other promotional material. For a quick reference, here is the final design that appears on the cartridge and in the manual of the SFC/SNES version:

While all the core design elements are there, there are quite a few little adjustments when you compare the two! The eyes and the overall build of the body for example. It also somewhat accentuates the details that make the original Pete distinct from the more popular, widely used design that came about starting in "GB," which went into development shortly after the original game and released a little over a year later. It's interesting to see how such an iconic character went through a lot of iterations over a few years until it became the distinct and recognizable form we know today.
