A Harry Potter AU RP
857 posts
In 1981, Voldemort went to the home of Lily and James Potter in order to kill their infant son, Harry. He never made it there. Betrayed by turncoat Death Eaters Severus Snape and Lucius Malfoy, Voldemort died that night, leaving the Wizarding World in peace. Now, fourteen years later, rumors have begun to spread that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named may be coming back... *NAVIGATION* *F.A.Q.*

Of course certain things about magical fashion always stay the same: the use of green and purple clothing to mark oneself as a wix when out among the Muggle, for example. But even in the old-fashioned Wizarding World fashions are continually changing and evolving.
While every year sees a greater influx of Muggle-influence to the fashions worn by Wizarding society, the chief fashions of the Wizarding World remain distinctly separate. Robes are still worn in all professional environments, whether as specific uniforms or simply as proper business or formal-wear; no one would dream of walking into the Ministry of Magic in nothing but denims and blazers, nor would anyone doing so be taken seriously. While many commercial environments are slightly more relaxed, anyone who wants to be seen as a serious professional will certainly make sure that they are dressed like one whenever engaged in business activities or any other sort of professional endeavor.
Younger members of the Wizarding World – those who have recently graduated Hogwarts School – who wish to make a splash have begun to incorporate some more “Muggle-ish” elements into their fashions, and robes that end just below the knee in front and scoop to the calves in back, exposing legs often clad in stylish boots, are beginning to be seen on the streets of Wizarding Britain, particularly in the bigger towns and cities. It is considered risque dress and is frowned upon by the stodgier members of society, which of course is exactly what the young fashionistas are looking for. Such fashion-rebellion is nothing new; during the First Wizarding War for example many of the younger opponents of Voldemort’s ideals adopted the “Muggle mini-skirt” into their fashion, exposing quite a bit more of their legs – usually clad in bright-colored tights or leggings admittedly – than these new slanted-cut robes reveal. The Second Wizarding War did not last long enough for it to make much of a direct impact on fashion, but even then “Muggle styles” were often sported by those who wanted to visibly declare their disenchantment with Voldemort’s policies and those of his Ministry while those who approved of blood-supremacist ideals turned to more old-fashioned styles of robes.
At the moment there is little politicization of fashion, but with the increasing backlash against half-breeds that could soon change.

It is said that the house you’re sorted into at Hogwarts reveals a lot about the sort of person you are. It is said that the house you’re in at Hogwarts can determine a great deal about the kind of person you’ll grow up to be. But no one seems to fit the traits of just one house; everyone has somewhere else they could have almost gone, instead, if the hat had chosen differently.
What would the Wizarding World we know be like if everybody had been sorted somewhere else? Re-imagine the events of Order of the Phoenix if the faces you know wore different colors; re-imagine the world resorted.

Would Chloe Grace Moretz be an acceptable FC change for Hannah Abbott? I want to apply, but I don't have gifs of her current FC and finding gifs can be a pain on my computer.
Same nonnie from like ten seconds ago. Whooooops. Sorry. Didn’t realize this was closed and honestly it’s kind of saddening because this is really cool. Okay. Have a nice day if anyone sees this!
I am so sorry, yes, we are unfortunately closed! Does it help any if I say that it makes me genuinely really happy that you’re disappointed by that? Also I of course am sorry that you’re sad, because I would love for this place to still be rolling along because I still really love the whole idea, and I had a lot of fun here! Maybe in the winter when life slows down for me again I can start the place up again, and maybe we’ll get enough interest to keep it running, but for now – alas, Hartbeats is no more! I’m so glad you messaged me though, thank you! It still excites me that people find this rp interesting, even though it’s dead!
For the record if anybody wants to run with this premise and make their own roleplay set in an AU-world like this one, I would be totally cool with that. Come and talk to me and I’ll help you with world building, even put a link here to your new game! I really do think it’s a fascinating idea (if I do say so myself lol) and I would love to see it explored further, whether with me in charge or not!

Unfortunately it’s time to admit that I simply don’t have the time necessary to keep this roleplay going. This makes me very sad of course because it’s been a wonderful journey and one that I wish we could have finished, because all of you have been amazing writers and roleplayers and I’m going to miss you and your wonderful ideas and beautiful characters, and I would have loved to see what would have happened next. It’s not fair to you players, though, to keep this place going when I can’t devote proper time to doing it right, so Hartbeats is closing it’s doors. I want to thank all of you for coming along on this wild “what if” with me and to wish you all the luck in the world. Thank you.

are you still active?
Absolutely! I myself had to take a week off to help my job move locations, but everybody else here has kept the dash hopping in my absence like the wonderful players they are, and I’m finally finishing up with that, so I’ll be back to shepherd momentarily! In the meantime I’m certainly still around enough to answer questions, review applications, and discuss future plot-plans!

October, 1995: FIRST HOGSMEADE VISIT OF THE TERM
Hallowe’en that year looked to be a cold, wet holiday. Neither the gloomy weather nor the rumors and whispers fluttering around the school in the wake of the strange attack on Professor Alastor Moody deterred the staff or students from preparing for the first Hogsmeade Village visit of the school year, nor the holiday feast that was to follow. Fluttering bats were hung in the Great Hall, the suits of armor standing sentinel throughout the castle were festooned with spider-webs, and the school ghosts practiced synchronized floating.
As the week-end approached, most talk in the castle turned to the nearby magical village, and of course to the traditional holiday feast that would follow. All students from third year up would be free to visit Hogsmeade Village if they chose, and even the teachers would get something of a day-off. Everyone in the castle, including the youngest students and the school ghosts, would get to enjoy the luscious feast, and enticing smells of pumpkin, cinnamon, and other things wafted through the hallways as the House Elves prepared for the dinner.
In the staff-room there was brief discussion of cancelling the excursion due to the mysterious circumstances surrounding Alastor Moody’s recent Petrification, but in the end it was decided that giving the students a chance to get out of the castle for a day wasn’t likely to put them in any danger.
HALLOWE’EN HOUSEPOINT OPPORTUNITY:
Write a para-starter set in Hogsmeade or relating to the Hallowe’en Feast to earn twenty housepoints; respond to someone else’s para-starter for fifteen!
The Permission Slip: did your character’s parents/guardians sign it readily or did they hesitate for some reason? Was your character able to go to the village with their year-mates or were they left behind? Can they go this year, or are they stuck in the castle with the younger students?
Haunted Hogsmeade: has your character visited the Shrieking Shack? It’s supposed to be the most haunted building in Great Britain, you know! Of course, we know that the “ghosts” people heard there were really just Remus suffering through his early werewolf-transformations, but none of the current students know that--save maybe Harry and Marigold!
The Shopping Trip: other than mail-orders these occasional excursions are the only chance most students have to stock-up on anything during the school year; does your character take advantage of the trip to get some important shopping in? What do they buy there, and why?
Love & Leaves: there aren’t many romantic places in Hogwarts; those students who have (or hope to have) a special someone take advantage of Hogsmeade for a proper date. Has your character ever done so?
Hallowe’en Traditions: the holiday isn’t as important in the Wizarding World as it is to Muggles; the biggest celebrations happened in 1982 as everyone toasted the anniversary of You-Know-Who’s death. What does the day mean for your character? Do they plan to do anything special, or is the chance for a holiday feast all the celebration they need?
These paras do not need to be related to the above prompts; those are for inspiration purposes only. If you’re having trouble coming up with an idea for your para(s) don’t hesitate to ask; we’ll gladly supply additional prompts!

We’ve all been there: you have a character, or a game, that you absolutely love but that you just can’t find anything (or anyone) to do with them. Or maybe you’re new to a group and aren’t getting much traction yet. Or you’re just in a slump. Whatever the reason, here are some suggestions and things to keep in mind to help jump-start your roleplay interactions:
Post interesting starters! That gives other players something to respond to, and if you never post any you’re shutting yourself out!
Reply to other people’s starters. That’s the simplest and most obvious tactic of all but seems to go overlooked a lot, whether out of a polite desire not to monopolize the dash, simple shyness…or that vicious cycle that can start when you think, “well they didn’t respond to my starter so I won’t respond to theirs.” Someone has to break that circle so it might as well be you. And maybe they think you don’t want to talk to them and are afraid to intrude! Put your character out there and show everyone how much fun it is to interact with you, and the next time you post a starter, they’ll be a lot more likely to jump on the chance!
Do something different. Maybe your character has fallen into a rut. Maybe nobody feels inspired to interact with them because it’s the same old thing over-and-over again. Branch out, put them in a situation you “could never see them in.” Take a chance! What have you got to lose? Remember that they’re a character and not a person, which means that you’re in control of what happens to them — not them. So take a risk. Toss them in at the deep end and see what happens next!
Do something active. Maybe you’ve ended up, perhaps quite by accident, with a passive character who doesn’t do anything; who relies on other people to prompt or nudge or coax them into taking action. Don’t just sit around! Even if you’re playing a passive or submissive character you, as the player, have to be active or your character is going to bore everyone else as much as they bore you. It’s no one else’s job to drag your character into interesting situations; they’re your responsibility so find something for them to actually do. Don’t just let things happen to your character; take charge and take action!
Communicate. If you’re in a group, have you asked your admin for advice or assistance? They usually have good ideas; isn’t that why you joined their group in the first place? You can always ask one of your friendly neighborhood roleplay helpers for tips too, whether you’re in a group or not. And don’t forget to communicate with your fellow players! That doesn’t mean just posting passive-aggressive comments in the ooc about your lack of interactions, or just saying, “if anybody wants to plot hit me up!” and think that’s the end of things. Roleplay is a two-way street so don’t rely on other people to have ideas for you; share some ideas of yours with them. If you want to interact with someone, take the initiative and seek them out, don’t just wait for them to come to you. (The worst they can say is no.) Talk to folks both in and out of character and present ideas for things for your characters to do. Make sure you listen to their ideas too of course, but don’t put the whole weight of thinking-up things to do on them alone. Participate, don’t just wait!
In the end, remember that it is your responsibility to make your character active, engaged, and interesting — nobody else’s. Take action, find things for them to do, and initiate interactions instead of just waiting for them to come to you. If you’re in a group that’s legitimately ignoring you, leave. Otherwise, it all boils down to what you’re doing so make sure you’re doing something! Don’t be the passive princess standing on the side of the ballroom waiting for her prince to come; hit the dance floor on your own and make yourself the bell of the ball.

why do some characters have pre-set classes on the roster even though they're not in play?
Because sometimes when I have to remove a player because they haven’t been meeting activity requirements, I forget to delete their character from the class roster page! That’s just a mistake on my part; you’re not required to take the same classes if you apply for that character later! I’m sorry!

GINNY WEASLEY HAS RECEIVED HER LETTER. Welcome to Hartbeats, Manon! Please check out the Getting Started page to see what to do next, and let us know if you have any questions!
ABOUT YOU:
Name: Manon
Age: 27
Time-zone & availability: GMT+1. I realize that most people will be in the states so my timezone isn’t ideal, but I’ve been dealing with that ever since I started rping. I recently started working a 9-5 job so I’ll usually be able to come online every evening and on weekends. Please note that English is not my first language!
Experience: I’ve been RP-ing for at least 10 years now, exclusively Harry Potter RP’s and almost exclusively as Ginny. The blog I’m submitting this from is from an RP I’m in that’s currently on hiatus, and I’m also currently doing a one on one RP.
THE CHARACTER:
Name: Ginny Weasley
Age & Year:  14, 4th year
House: Gryffindor
Blood status: Pureblood
Sexual orientation/Gender: Straight/female
Wand wood, core & length: Holly, Unicorn hair, 8,5 inches
Boggart: Ginny’s Boggart takes the form of a snake. They are disgusting and dangerous and venomous, and it doesn’t help that Ron once put one (a tiny, harmless very much non-venomous, especially because it was fake) in her bed.
Patronus: Ginny has not been able to create a Patronus yet (nor has she tried), but if she could, it would be a mare
Pet: Ginny does not have a pet. Ron has had a rat for ages, and her parents got Percy an owl when he made prefect. She’d really love to have an owl of her own, but knows that her parents can’t afford one, so she won’t ask.
Changes: None
Appearance: though I think Bonnie Wright is stunning, the way she’s portrayed in the movies is too plain looking for what Ginny’s described to look like in the books.Ginny is about 5’2-5’3 and has long, fiery red hair. There are freckles all over her body, though they are most prominent on her face. Her skin is fair and burns easily when exposed to the sun. Her build is a mix of her mum and dad; short like her mother, and slender like her dad. Her eyes are an almost exact copy of her mum’s warm, chocolate ones, and she has an easy smile that stretches across her entire face and lights up her eyes, just like her father, though she’s been told that she resembles Fred & George when she either smirks or grins.
History: Even though the Weasley’s have always had very little money, Ginny’s childhood has never been anything but happy. Sure, she might not have had as many toys as other kids did, but she always had plenty of brothers to play with. Brothers who would go to great lengths to protect her from anything and everything the world has to offer. Which can actually be highly annoying at times. Being the only girl in a family with 7 kids meant that she often got things that her brothers did not; new clothes, especially. Where her brothers often received hand-me-down after hand-me-down, her being a girl meant that she needed clothes of her own, which was often met with slight resentment from her brothers, especially Ron. And though she usually gets along great with her brothers, there’s also a downside to being the baby of the family. For example, her brothers never let her play quidditch with them, or even ride their brooms, which is why she has been sneaking out at night and stealing their brooms to practice on ever since she was seven. Having always been outgoing, Ginny had no trouble making friends once she started Hogwarts, and she is generally well-liked by most people. She could easily be one of the mean girls, with her looks and popularity, if not for the fact that she despises people who pick on people that are different, and people who think that they’re better than others.
Personality: Feisty, loyal, brave and outgoing. Growing up with 6 brothers means that she refuses to let people walk all over her, and she’s learned to stick up for herself at a young age. She has quite a wicked sense of humour, which she probably got from the twins. A tomboy at heart, Ginny is generally most comfortable around boys, but she does have a few girlfriends that he enjoys spending time with and do more girly things with. She does try to be friendly at all times, but when she doesn’t like someone, the claws come out. She’s talented with a wand and is not afraid to hex someone when they deserve it.
Classes: Care of Magical Creatures & Ancient Runes
Writing sample: I opted to add something from another RP, as it’s getting late and I have work in the morning, but I wanted to get his out tonight! Ginny was exhausted after a long day of training with the Harpies. Even though she was only a reserve, they made long hours, and as usual, no change in weather could cancel a Quidditch training or match. Today though, Ginny was glad for the long hours, the rain-soaked robes, and the fact that her muscles seemed to be on fire. At least it kept her mind off of the fact that today was Fred and George’s birthday. Kept her mind off of it for most of the day, that was. Growing up, the twins’s birthday was always a big event, and she didn’t think she’d ever forget their seventeenth. Ginny had only been thirteen at the time, but she had still been allowed to come to the big birthday bash they had thrown in the Gryffindor common room. It was where she had her first Butterbeer, given to her by her ‘now adult and responsible’ brothers. Shaking the memory off of her, the redhead headed into the locker rooms to grab her things, not bothering to take a shower at the Harpies facilities. She was dying to get home and change into something comfortable, and apparating there would only take a second. Swinging her broom over one shoulder and her bag over the other, Ginny hurried over to the apparation point, contemplating where she should go. She still officially lived at the Burrow with her parents, though she spent about half of her time at Grimmauld place, much to her mothers chagrin. According to Molly Weasley, her daughter was too young to shack up with her boyfriend, and it didn’t seem to matter to her that her brother and Hermione lived in the former Order Headquarters as well. Deciding that she could really use a Butterbeer or something stronger today, Ginny spun on the spot, appearing on the doorstep of number 12, Grimmauld place. Another thing Molly wasn’t a fan of, was Ginny drinking alcohol, and she was planning on drinking a few Butterbeers in Fred’s honor tonight. Pulling out her wand, the former Gryffindor tapped an intricate pattern on the wooden door, allowing her access to the house that she, sort of, shared with her boyfriend, her brother and one of her best friends. She didn’t think anyone would be home yet, which should give her plenty of time to take a long, hot shower, Pulling the door closed behind her, Ginny walked towards the stairs, kicking her muddy boots off halfway into the hallway, already knowing Kreacher would give her grief for dragging mud this far into the house. Pulling off her cloak, she hung it over the banister to dry, frowning when she heard sounds coming from the kitchen. Making her way towards the kitchen door on her, blissfully dry, socks, Ginny pulled open the heavy door. “Whoever’s down there better have a Butterbeer waiting for me” she yelled down the stairs as she bounded down the steps.
Altered canon: I like the fact that we can see what all characters, especially Harry, would be like in a world that isn’t torn apart by war. Most RP’s I’ve been a part of are kind of angsty, with characters that have had to grow up too quickly, and I like that they can be carefree teenagers here. It would be interesting to see what friendships and relationships will happen under different circumstances.
Additional changes: None whatsoever!
Rules/Guidelines: No questions or objections! [redacted]
One last question: I came across this rp by aimlessly browsing any rp related tags on Tumblr. The RP that i’m currently in is on hiatus and that just doesn’t fly with me ;)
