Yuzuru Hanyu Special Interview: Toward the Ideal and Beyond! (Ice Jewels Vol.6, May 2017)
Tumblr media
Yuzuru looks back at the season, talks about his struggles with Hope & Legacy, declares his love for the ever dependable 4T and lavishes attention on primadonna 4S (somewhere in the background, 3A cries), nerds out, and shares his thoughts on preparation for Pyeongchang.
More seriously, he has always been a sincere student of the sport and thoughtful about every single decision he makes with his programs. It’s always been a delight to read his words, and hopefully that comes across.
Translated by gladi. Feel free to repost with credits.
理想の先へ!Toward the Ideal and Beyond
Translator’s note regarding the title:  Yuzuru first wrote “risou no saki he” (理想の先へ) as a message for the next season in an interview with Nagano-san on Hoodo Station Sunday (報道ステーションSUNDAY), aired by TV Asahi on April 23, 2017 after the World Team Trophy ended. There is duality in this sentence due to the word saki (先), which can be defined either as “destination” or “ahead”, “beyond”, “hereafter”. Therefore, the entire phrase can be taken as moving “toward the ideal” but also “toward a place beyond the ideal.”

Yuzu: Ah, it’s short again Yuzu: I can’t *red words* Yuzu: I CAN’T, I CAN’T *BIG red words*
In which Nobu fanboys a tiny bit, Yuzuru cannot tie his tie and Taka-chan comes to the rescue.

For a long time, “I was talking”. The Four Continents figure skating Championship was held in Gangneung, South Korea as a pre-event for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games that are approaching in about a year. Although he was top in the free program, Yuzuru Hanyu (22) = ANA = ended up with the silver medal. At the end of the exhibition finale, while leaving the rink he bent down and touched the ice, muttering something. A little longer than usual, just under 10 seconds. What he was trying to convey at that time, maybe gratitude, maybe a promise to reunite.
With the goal of the Olympic Championship in mind, Hanyu got a lot from this tournament. First of all, he got to feel the ice at the actual venue, feel the atmosphere of the rink. “It was fun. The blue-toned rink reminded me of the Sochi Olympics. The rink might be slightly bigger than that time, easy-to-glide, nice temperature; ice condition was also very good.”
After the first official practice, in an interview with the Korean media, he showcased his (knowledge of) Korean. While listening to the (media) person, he greeted: “Hello. My name is Yuzuru. Thank you for always supporting me.” This was also reported on top sports news on local television stations. For the countries he visits, Hanyu always memorizes and does the greeting in the language of that country. This time, he has once again caught the hearts of the local people.
And then it was time. SP was at night, the free program took place from 11 am to 3 pm, close to the Olympics main event from 10 am to 2 pm. Hanyu himself, looking forward to the real games, tried to adjust. “The same venue and at the same time, I was able to actually imagine (the real games) and give it my all during the performance. It was a good sensation. Having tried so much, without fatigue, I also gained more confidence for the upcoming Olympics.” Quickly changing the composition, he showed adaptability by changing his 4 quads in his performance.
As a new rival, Nathan Chen, appeared, Hanyu finished with the silver medal at the pre-Olympics. However, more than the results, he gained a great experience. Hanyu laughed and said: “Honestly, I’m looking forward to future skating, and practicing has become fun”. A promise with the ice 1 year later. Having gotten stronger, he is coming back to the stage.
