OP is right. My political psychology professors at Stanford talked us through a number of studies that found it was mostly politicians and activists/extremists who tend to be surveyed when generating those click-baitey stats suggesting America as a whole is intensely polarized.
"Elite politics is quite polarized," Krupnikov says. "So the question is, does that mean everyone else is?"
Why not ask "everyone else" whether America is really that divided? Pollsters do, all the time. But there's a problem. Ordinary folks think Americans are much more partisan than they are. In the same study, people grossly overestimated (by 78%) the size of the most polarized group within each party - that is, Democrats who call themselves liberal and Republicans who call themselves conservative. At the same time, ordinary Americans grossly underestimated (by 77%) the share of the other party who are moderate. That share is, in fact, at least half of either party. "People probably are exactly right about how polarized their leaders are," says Robb Willer, a sociologist at Stanford. "They get it very wrong for the general public." Source: Time
The far right have been systematically defunding our public education system for decades now, so it’s no wonder the majority of Americans don’t understand how conditions will continuously worsen for the working class under unchecked free-market capitalism. They just know bills were easier to pay in 2016 and they think it was because Trump had economic policies that put more money in their pockets or kept prices down. They don’t know that he was blocked from doing the opposite by federal guardrails that no longer exist. They don’t know covid inflation happened at almost the exact same time at the exact same rates for most OECD countries. Just that eggs have been more expensive in the 2020s.
And now we have a president-elect whose entire campaign structure and business empire was designed to scam working class people out of their money and labor so him and his fucked up owner/billionaire class friends like Epstein and Musk can consolidate power and capital and keep as much of it from “trickling down” to your grocery bill as they possibly can. And anything is possible for them at this point.
What’s also crazy is that the losses likely probably came from people whose only political view is that eggs are two expensive and they voted for a guy whose explicit economic plan is to intentionally cause a major depression
#election 2024#this is how liberty dies with thunderous applause etc#closer than ive ever been to picking up a brick
