uh i saw you said you like snupin, and i agree with you about the lack of content which is a shame, and i was wondering whether you knew some good snupin fics? bc honestly i haven't found too many good ones (though i must admit i didn't spend that much time looking) thx in advance

it’s a tragedy isn’t it bc it really is such an interestingly balanced pairing. both social outcasts, both morally grey, both part of social groups which weren’t the nicest…

all these fics are on ao3, but from what i understand a lot of snupin content is on older archives. i think (and i could be wrong here) that snupin was a lot more popular before the release of hbp. apparently snape’s reveal as a death eater put to rest the shipping. it’s also competing with the much more popular wolfstar pairing, as well as snarry and snamione.

snupin santa is a great directory. moonshadow is an old archive and hard to search on, but has a lot of stuff. while not featured here, mckay is probably the most productive snupin writer there is. i think all of their stuff was moved to ao3, but if not, their fic was previously posted here (not all of it is snupin/harry potter tho).

I don’t have time to write out a full review, so here are some of my favourite Snupin fanfics.

The Natural Order of Things by Calico "If you do anything with him, Moony," Sirius said, "I swear, I will be so angry." "I won't," Remus protested, his eyebrows flying up. "What do you take me for?" he added, belatedly trying to blot out the memory of Snape beneath him, holding him, making him groan. Words: 43k

The Meaning of Mistletoe by Endrina “Just… tell me. Tell me what is going on, Snape.” What was going on was that Severus Snape had no trouble tracking down one Petunia Evans, now Dursley, to a little town in Surrey where he saw how exactly she was treating her nephew. Which somehow led to last night and Severus knocking on Lupin’s door with a toddler half-asleep in his arms. Words: 30k (This is the first part of a long series, the two sequels don’t focus on Snape & Lupin so much, and instead devolves into a lot of plot. It’s one of the only fics I’ve read for the plot, tbh. It is worthwhile, but the third instalment is 240k long & could do with some editing.)

For Severus Snape, in the Event of My Death by Snegurochka In the event of my death, please deliver this to Severus Snape. He will know why. Well, Teddy thought as he read his father's note, that was a relief, because he himself sure as hell didn't know why. The problem, of course, would be actually asking him, given the man in question had been dead for sixteen years. Words: 8k

Five Times Lupin and Snape Should Not Have Had Sex at Order Headquarters (But Couldn't Help It) by Snegurochka The first time was rather a surprise, the second time just plain predictable. The third was supposed to go much differently, thank you very much, and the fourth devolved into cliché. The fifth, moreover... well. Neither of them really wishes to talk about that one, if you don't mind. Words: 4k

So, this fic had the weirdest premise out of all the HP fics I’ve read. Severus, as a birthday present, gets reincarnated and sent back to earth from heaven. It’s a fluffy, slightly cracky piece which ‘plays fast and loose with Christianity’. It doesn’t take itself too seriously either, which makes it even better.

Overall the writing was good. There are a few moments where it’s more tell than show, and some instances where exposition takes over and hampers the flow of the fic. That being said, the writing is very charming and works well carries the humorous elements.

There are a lot of characters in a short space of time, but they aren’t overused and work to push Harry and Severus’ relationship forward. Lily, James, and Sirius have excellent moments between them. Albus Severus is cute and determined to know Severus. Harry, Severus and the Hogwarts’ Professors react to the sudden reincarnation as you’d expect. But, if I’m honest, it’s Jesus that really steals the show. He is everything I’d want Jesus to be, if not more.

If you read this for nothing else, do it for Jesus.

Completely Innocent by Snarry5evr Minerva keeps finding two of her professors in very compromising positions. Words: 19k

Reconciling Lily's Eyes by persepolis13 Had Harry known "bonding" with his former professor would lead him to three different countries, a hastily-planned wedding and his pants around his ankles in Snape's sitting room, he wouldn't have quit his day job. Or…maybe he would've… What it's like to fall in love with someone you absolutely cannot stand, who happens to still be in love with your mum. Words: 52k

Starched Cuffs by made.of.bees Draco trips Ron, who trips Harry, who is knocked into Snape and accidentally brushes his cuffs. Such a little thing, yet it's all he can think about. Everything he's been holding back since the Final Battle comes bursting forth, and Harry is determined to get Snape to stop ignoring him and actually talk. Words: 46k

Anybody Else by Dementordelta Severus Snape has a project for Harry Potter, Harry has other ideas. Words: 28k

You are the one who came to me begging, and I’ve finally outgrown my former need to bend over backwards for every manipulative bastard who happens to be clever enough to whisper sweet promises of friendship in my ear.” Wordcount: 24k Rating: 5 Writing: 4 Characterisation: 5 Plot: 5

Something I find that makes a truly great Snape & Harry fic (whether is be Severitus, friendship, or slash) is showing a relationship that is more punishing to build than easy. Snape and Harry are such difficult characters to write that I can’t blame any writer who jumps straight into the good stuff. However, this fic manages to make it seem easy. Crafted here is a realistic friendship between Snape and Harry as two post-war Hogwarts Professors. The premise is heartbreaking: Harry is interested in Snape, alas! Snape is straight. What starts off as unresolved sexual tension develops as the fic unfolds into a gloriously painful unrequited love.

The characterisation and plot are believable and well handled. The writing / style is well thought out, appropriate for the piece and beautiful. There’s are moments that remind me of Call Me By Your Name. In particular, that scene in the movie when Oliver and Elios are not-talking about their feelings for one another: “Is it better to speak or die?”.

This fic is a rarity, managing to tick every box that that makes Snarry seem realistic. It’s not an easy relationship: it’s angst ridden and bittersweet, and Harry’s inner monologue is heartbreaking. This is one of the few fics I find myself coming back to and is well worth the read.

“You’re afraid.” Harry blurts out without thinking and swallows nervously when the flow of Snape’s words halts so abruptly that Harry is a heartbeat away from believing he’s gone deaf.

Snape’s incredulous laughter is pitch perfect, but just a second too late.“I have nothing to be afraid of, Potter.”

Title: Esse Quam Videri (To Be Rather Than to Seem) Author: torino10154 Summary: Non-magical AU: set in North Carolina in the 50's. Wordcount: 17k Rating: 4/5 Writing: 4 Characterisation: 5 Plot: 4

This is a great little non magic au: small town usa rampant with homophobia. It’s well written and the style suits the universe, but I think it ends rather abruptly. (There is a “sequel” in the form of a series of vignettes which expands on the universe.) The description in particular is great, you can feel the summer heat and the oppressive nature of a small town. I loved the additions of small details like Harry being called “Harry James”, and Petunia’s interference.

The characterisation manages to fit the universe without seeming ooc. Harry’s frustrations and fear of being trapped in his environment are realistic and at times heartbreaking. Severus is both seductive and scornful. Lily and James in particular are well handled. The author managed to translate the theme of Lily’s love saving Harry over into the fic, as well as James’ more bigoted side.

A great, underappreciated fic.
