Stone Repointing
Since man knew how to put two stones together, stone structures have been erected on the face of this earth. This gradually evolved to include building materials such as bricks. Of course, keeping two (and many) of these building blocks together requires an adhesive—mortar, lime, or cement. The finish that is applied to these bricks and the adhesive that holds them together is the  pointing.
Whether it mortar or cement, the adhesive has the bricks firmly in place. Larger joints can be reduced in size with the help of small stones or stones. In addition, mortar bedding also helps prevent the penetration of water. Acting like a porous sponge, both keep the water in the bay and let the structure breathe. Incorrect or faulty pointing isn’t just harmful—permanently it damaging. In many cases where faulty pointing is not properly addressed, irreparable damage to the structure may be caused. This is especially true in the case of older buildings, which suffer from pointing out that they have gone wrong over time. Faulty pointing disfigures the structure and the stone pointing and does not allow the building to breathe. How it works It all about solidifying the wall again, making it porous and breathable again, and filling the gaps. The mortar mixture, which is compatible with the structure, is used for this purpose, while the joints are similarly cut to prevent feathering. The process is even more difficult with vintage buildings, as cement cannot be used. For these buildings, a dryer material is needed, and deep reassessment is often needed as a measure against shrinkage and gaps. The aim is to bind the material as firmly as possible. We are also very careful when cutting mortar joints in order to minimize damage to the bare minimum. Everything we do is done with the aim of minimizing the risk while ensuring that the building is restored to its original shape. We use hammers and chisels by hand to produce the desired effects. A soft mortar-pointed wall must be repaired once the mortar has eroding well behind the face of the masonry units. Erosion will occur unevenly over the surface
of the wall; the time for re-exposure has come when the mortar has receded 5mm to 10mm back from the face. If the wall has been re-marked using cement, the work will almost certainly have to be rebuilt with lime mortar at some stage. It not necessarily easy to judge when to do this. If the pointer fails, the wall becomes damp or the masonry units begin to degrade, then stone repointing is urgently needed. However, some walls re-marked in cement, especially those in sheltered positions. The good news is that this is a relatively straightforward task that can be undertaken by any competent person with a bit of instruction and training. The first stage is to rake out the old pointer to remove any defective mortar and provide sufficient depth (10mm) to key the new pointer. You’re also going to have to get rid of any very loose and friable mortar, which might involve going deeper. With a stone wall in poor condition that could be much deeper than that. If you get to the stage where the stability of the masonry units or the integrity of the wall deteriorates, then it time to call an expert. Once the joints have been raked out, they must be dampened with a fine spray of water. This step helps prevent the new pointer from drying too quickly and failing. The new mortar is then forced into joints with a pointed iron or a small trunk, ensuring that it is well packed and slightly proudly finished. This will be a two- stage process for very deep joints, allowing the first stage to start before moving to the second stage. Once the mortar has begun to harden (when it can only be marked with a thumbnail) it should be returned to the joints. Finally the pointing should be rubbed back to just behind the masonry units, making sure that it does not go over their edges.
