@d-e-w-p's Eenie Miney & Mo used Tri Attack!!

I was initially going to leave it as a sketch but then I was like "ah. hm. no this slaps too hard actually, i Can't Not try to render it."

(Speaking of, early sketch under the cut because I do like its energy)

Since it took A While*, here's a little breakdown of the illustration I posted here!! Also because it turned out really nice but it was a very 'trust the process' piece X)

* clip studio paint tells me over 12 hours, but that's just the time my pen was on the tablet, not all the hours i spent staring at the screen (important part of the process)

First idea, and then thumbnail. I did about 4-5 of them, all variations on the same theme, until I landed on this one (it was the cutest).

Then, the sketch! Which is a sketch on top of another messier sketch. You refine until it's clean enough for the next step:

...As you can see, the background still hasn't moved a inch, and it was at this point that I couldn't postpone working on it anymore.

I believe that one should work on all parts of a piece in tandem, so that you don't end up with one fully rendered flower in the foreground while everything else is a sketch, but. Backgrounds are intimidating, okay.

First attempt at putting down flats for the BG:

Unfortunately it didn't work for me, too cartooney? Perspective does not work like that I'm pretty sure.

So I went back to collage refs and study them (mostly background art for several ghibli movies I'll be honest) and then:

NEW THUMBNAIL

NEW FLATS. yes it looks horrible at this stage, yes it's an improvement,

And finally, the painting stage!! While very time-consuming, I find that once you get going it's more relaxing than putting down flats. Except for that road. That road stressed me out.

At one point I made the leaves and posts bigger because these characters are supposed to be very smol and the scale didn't read very well. Still not perfect but it's better!

And after that it's just a matter of adding some simple shadows to the characters and fixing details until it's done!

Drew this for a friend (who doesn't have a tumblr). The vaguely mouse-like (?) critter perched on a branch is my OC Gentian, the little old man is theirs!

Given that these characters are both very small (~20 cm and 60 cm respectively) I thought it'd be cute to have them interact– tried to show the scale with the background, wasn't easy to keep track of!

Very proud of how it turned out :D
