Students visit cheese producers in the Lazio region
GLi organized a 1-day excursion outside of Rome for the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Fall 2016 in Rome group. During the excursion, students met with cheese producers and learned about the organic cheese making process. First, they visited an industrial production ran by the same family for three generations. Then they visited a Slow Food Farm to see a farmer preparing cheese the traditional way.

GLi organized and managed a 2-day trip to the region of Campania for the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Fall 2016 in Rome group. The group visited important sites such as the Scavi di Pompei, Museo di Capodimonte, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and Scavi di Ercolano.

Students at the FAO CFS 43 ‘Adopting African Orphan Crops’event
October 17, 2016
Students in the Food and Culture course of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Fall 2016 Program in Rome participated in the Committee on World Food Security CFS 43 event entitled Adopting African Orphan Crops at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. The African Orphan Crops Consortium (AOCC), founded in 2011, is the driver to generate the genomic resources for the selected crops. Approved by African Heads of State at the African Union Assembly and led by the New Partnership forAfrica’s Development (NEPAD), the AOCC is sequencing the genomes of 101 African food plants. The consortium’s African Plant Breeders Academy (AfPBA) in Nairobi, Kenya will train 250 African scientists and technicians to sequence and breed the plants to be more nutritious, productive and resilient in the face of climate change.

The talk was part of a round table with Professor Walter Bowyer (HWS Fall 2016 in Rome Program Program Director), Dr. Pier Alberto Merli (HWS Rome Resident Director), and Dr. Sonia Massari (GLi Director) and included the participation of the students in the HWS Fall 2016 in Rome Program. Talks at GLi is an ongoing initiative to foster discussion and highlight research on Food Studies with speakers and researchers from all around the world at GLi headquarters in Rome.

Students at the FAO for the International Launch of the Right to Food and Nutrition Watch 2016

Students in the Food and Culture course of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Fall 2016 Program in Rome participated in the International Launch of the Right to Food and Nutrition Watch 2016 - "Keeping Seeds in People's Hands" at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. Each year, a consortium of organizations fighting for the right to food publishes the Right to Food and Nutrition Watch, a volume of articles focusing on the most recent debates in the field. Students were impressed by many of the topics discussed: the connection between seeds and human beings, the importance of women's role in food security, Indigenous knowledge vs Academic knowledge, and people's right to food.

Students explore the archeology and food culture of Calabria and Sicily
October, 2016
GLi organized and managed a 6-day trip to the South of Italy for the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Fall 2016 in Rome group. The group visited some of southern Italy’s major archeological treasures such as the Bronzes of Riace, or Riace Warriors in Reggio Calabria, the Greek Theatres in Taormina and Syracuse, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, as well as the city of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna in Sicily. Students also explored the food culture, food production and culinary history and tradition of Calabria and Sicily through meetings with local producers and experts, visits and activities. At I Dolci di Nonna Vincenza students learned how to make Sicilian pasteries.
