WRAP UP.
1. The most interesting part of this class was the lesson on performance art. I didn’t even know performance art was a thing until taking this class. Besides not knowing about it, my initial thoughts on performance art the first time we talked about it was that it’s super weird & that it should just cease to exist. However, as we continued talking about it, I gained a newfound respect for it. Some performance art isn’t really as thought provoking as others, but the ones that are thought provoking have/had a really meaningful reason behind the madness. Some performance art was in response to issues at that time such as the Vietnam war & other wars in different countries, discrimination against women, discrimination against people of color, &/or crisis. While I personally wouldn’t perform some of these performance art performances, I find it admirable that other artists would for the sake of art & awareness. I think of it this way: in order to make people identify a certain issue, someone has to do something drastic & chaotic to get people to recognize it & wonder why exactly that person decided to do this drastic & chaotic thing.
2. The most frustrating part of this class—& all of my art classes in general—was coming up with creative ideas for upcoming projects. Creativity should be second nature for art majors & artists, but I feel as though I lack a lot of creativity. When deciding on what I would do for a project, it’d take me days to figure out what exactly I want/wanted to do. It always takes me until two days before or the day before the project was actually due to have an idea set in stone. However, this class has actually taught me that it’s okay to look at multiple artists’ work & gain ideas from that. I learned that using someone’s, or even multiple artists’ work as a starting point & tweaking it even just a little to where it just completely changes the dynamic of the art piece, makes the project unique & creative in its own way. With every project we’ve done in this class, I’ve used an artist’s work as a reference in some way to come up with my own art project idea which for the most part, I was satisfied with. Maybe not satisfied with how I did the project, but the idea itself. A project I was pretty satisfied with was my performance art project. For that project, I used Jayson Musson’s Hennessy Youngman idea & tweaked it to my interests & a current issue I see very prevalent in these past few years. Overall, I think this is my most successful project.
3. For winter break, I plan to relax big time. I won’t be creating anything serious (even though I really should) because I’m going to be around my family for most of the time & I don’t think I’d have much time to focus on an art piece, however, I do plan on coming up with a checklist, doing extensive research, getting practice in, & getting basic steps out of the way for a business I plan on pursuing in 2021. For my business, I will be crocheting clothes. I used to crochet as a child with an older lady in my neighborhood at the time & I really enjoyed it. I bought a sewing machine back in July to upcycle clothing, but I haven’t had the chance to learn how to use it nor find clothes I would particularly want to upcycle. So, I decided that I would just create my own clothing basically from scratch while picking up the skill of crocheting again & make a profit from it. I plan on learning how to do basic crochet chains again during winter break, learning how to crochet clothes, creating a website, creating a social media page, & coming up with a brand name & brand logo idea during this winter break & possibly far into January.
4. For 2021, I really hope to become a better artist, be better at networking for art, & be more productive & serious with my art. I also want to start my business & be successful in it before I have to go to Japan in August 2021 for a deployment (since I’m in the army). A lot of my friends are artists & they’re doing big things with their art, slowly becoming known & successful in the art scene, & I want to be like that as well. I’m a big procrastinator, so I should’ve become more serious with my art a LONG time ago since I’m already halfway into my college career (I’m a sophomore, going to be a junior in the spring semester), however, I can’t take back the past, I can only live in the present & the future & only grow from here.
5. The first step in order to achieve all of my goals as a whole is to develop a determined attitude. A step I need to do in order to achieve my goal of becoming a better artist is to draw everyday. If I want my drawings to be better, I must be putting in practice everyday. After I see proficiency, I have to share & promote my work in order to gain viewers & a following. I need to gain diligence & patience in myself for drawing but also for crocheting, especially if I want to create a successful business

ART PROJECT IN TIVOLI GARDENS
Originally, I’m from the Bronx, New York, which is a borough of New York City. However, I didn’t live there long enough to really get to know too many places in the city or in the borough I was born in. I moved to Georgia at a very young age & I’ve moved around a lot to plenty of places, so I don’t really have a “hometown” here in Georgia. Despite moving around a lot in the metro Atlanta area, I still don’t know many places that provide significance or services to the community. As I watched the documentary Waste Land that artist Vik Muniz directed, it reminded me of a place that I have close ties to. My mother, is from the country of Jamaica, specifically the city of Spanish Town, which is 30 minutes outside of Kingston, the capital. An undesirable neighborhood of Kingston is Tivoli Gardens, which has always sparked my interest. Although it may sound like a nice & elegant neighborhood, it is anything but that, according to the media. Tivoli Gardens was established as a renewal project by the Jamaican government to help the people who lived there get out of poverty, however, the people there remained poor with little help from the government & were subject to institutional & undesirable projects, which could be hazardous to the environment. As years progressed, poverty increased, violence, & drug trafficking became prevalent in the community. Constant confrontations erupt between Kingston’s law enforcement & the gunmen who live in Tivoli Gardens. To the residents of Tivoli Gardens, the gunmen & drug lords are the heroes, not law enforcement. It seems as if anytime the neighborhood has an encounter with law enforcement or the government, someone ends up being put in a worse position than they were already in or they end up dying. After watching Vik Muniz’s documentary, I thought his idea of taking pictures of the Catadores to allow Brazil to recognize them & the problems they face was great. As an art project for Tivoli Gardens, I want to do something very similar. There would be photos taken of the residents everyday lives without government & law enforcement interruptions. The next set of photos would be of the unfortunate events that take place whenever the community has an interaction with them. Then the last set of photos would be the aftermath of it all. These photos would be placed at the boundaries of the neighborhood & around the neighborhood, similar to the form of a triptych. The goal of this is to try to appeal to the Jamaican government & Kingston’s law enforcement. The sets of photos will show that the people of Tivoli Gardens aren’t these constantly violent people that the media makes them out to be. Tivoli Gardens has always been put last when it comes to making Kingston a better city & the residents are only violent when provoked, with good reason. The residents of Tivoli Gardens have absolutely no trust in them & I feel if the Jamaican government wants that to change in order to eliminate drug trafficking & violence, they should start policing their police & government officials.

PERFORMANCE AT THE BORDER
A performance I would like to see performed at all parts of the border would consist of many different immigrant families of any ethnicity & all ages. For the performance itself, there would be a podium & microphone. Each member has the opportunity to speak in front of the crowd about how moving to the United States positively &/or negatively impacted their life. What their daily life consists of, such as their work life, social life, &/or school life, etc. Of course, there should be a few translators at this performance so that everyone can understand. For this performance, it should be recorded & broadcasted on a broadcasting station or social media platform so that people all over the nation can view it
For this performance, it can go on for at least 12 hours a day or more. Everyone there is a performer & they can either go home every day if it is close by, go to another family member’s house if it’s close by, or a hotel will be provided for them if they need it. There would be food catered every day that they’re there at the border & new families can come anytime they want & stay at most a week in a hotel (if the curators are the ones paying for it). As for how money will be raised to fund for food, lodging, & anything extra, before the performance officially starts, curators of the piece would raise money for it by selling art pieces, doing art shows, etc. I want to say the duration of the performance piece could last until a political change is made but they may be unrealistic. The point of the whole performance is for the immigrant families there to relate to one another, make people at home who believe negative assumptions about immigrants change their views about them, & hopefully, help immigrants who’ve crossed the border illegally get a better chance at getting their citizenship without repercussions for crossing the border.

THE ARTIST IS PRESENT Response
Before watching the documentary, Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present, my view on performance art, or at least my view on Marina’s performance art was completely close-minded. After watching the documentary, I have a new look on her art & performance art in general. Marina Abramović is known as the “grandmother of performance art” & initially, I thought her Rhythm 0 piece was the only bizarre piece that she did which made her gain the label of “crazy” & “insane”, however, the documentary showed a plethora of her earlier pieces which prompted me to do a little more research on her art pieces after watching the short clips that were shown in the documentary. During her 5-part Rhythm series, Marina tested her physical & mental limitations by putting herself in situations that could seriously injure or even fatally damage her body. In these pieces, she played with knives, took medications intended for people with catatonia & schizophrenia, laid in the middle of an active fire, & even played with her consciousness. “What’s at the heart of her artwork is the shared experience between herself & her audience,” says choreographer, Richard Move. I wondered how Marina could put herself in such harmful situations because I know I could never do them; in any of these pieces she could’ve died. As Marina gave a brief history on her parents & her childhood, she said that her parents were militant & that she was basically raised to be a soldier from a young age, so I understand now where her strength & courage to do her pieces came from. For Marina’s, The Artist is Present piece, in one section of the MoMA, there were two chairs & a table in the middle of a large square in which Marina sat in one chair & someone from her audience sat across from her. Marina remained silent & (almost) motionless from the time the MoMA opened all the way until closing. In another section, were re-performances of 5 of her earlier pieces. Marina “trained” the young artists who were going to re-perform her pieces by making them count rice grains, fast for 3 days, bathe themselves in mud & river water, & more. At first, I couldn’t understand why she made them do any of this when they were just going to remain motionless for the entire re-performance but as I continued watching, Marina said the proposition was to “empty yourself,” & “be able to be in a present time.” Marina also stated that, “artists have to be warriors,” “they have to have determination & stamina to conquer himself & his weaknesses.” I finally understood why she made her performers do the things that she made them do. She wanted her performers to overcome any weakness & vulnerability they may have had prior to working with her so that they could become warriors themselves as young artists, just as she was & is to this day. After watching the documentary, I definitely have a different outlook on Marina Abramović’s pieces. Although for most of her performance pieces, I’m certainly not a fan of, I can see the overall meaning behind her pieces: to challenge the body, the audience, & redefine what makes a piece “art.”

Caution Tape Mask
As an artist, I intend to create pieces that project my emotions in an obvious & not so obvious way, with the use for different mediums, art styles, & non-traditional ways of accomplishing a piece. I believe any & everything is art, it just takes a little hardwork & dedication for it to become a piece that is not only meaningful to the viewer, but to the artist as well.
My caution tape mask was created with cloth from an old t-shirt, plastic, caution tape, & A LOT of adhesive. It isn’t the prettiest thing in the world & definitely isn’t how I wanted it to look but my idea was fully captured & the meaning behind is what matters most to me. This mask is intended for social distancing. Since caution tape is used for very serious situations, the mask is basically telling other people to STAY AWAY, stay 6 feet, since it’s apparently too difficult for some people to do even after 6-7 months of the virus being a pandemic.

Guns & Jamaica
1: Aimed for Jamaica: The reason I drew this is directly in response to the article I read, the guns that are illegally smuggled into Jamaica are killing off the islands residents at a high rate. The bullet has Jamaica’s name written on it.
2: Vote: I drew this because when it all comes down to it, who we vote for whether its the president or senators/reps, effects the world.
3: Pineapples & Bullets: I drew this for two reasons. I think the holes in the coconuts resemble bullet holes so it’s like the pineapples represent something good (the beaches, the weather, the people) contrasted with the bullet holes, which always means something negative. My other reason is because Americans love to visit Jamaica as a tourist, get married there, honeymoon there, etc., but don’t realize that the people who actually LIVE there are in danger everyday due to America’s loose gun laws. They could potentially be in danger too & will no longer be able to vacation in Jamaica if a change isn’t put forth.
4: The Electoral College: I drew this because I think the electoral college is outdated & isn’t fair... but I could be wrong. The electoral college is a direct correlation to voting since it is how our country’s leader, the one who makes decisions for the country, is chosen.
(Side note: I typed my bullet points on Microsoft Word first to make sure it was a page long then copied & pasted it onto here, that’s why it looks like that.)

Photo
Now is the part of the day where it’s time for my early morning routine: brushing my teeth. As I squeeze toothpaste onto my toothbrush, I think: I didn’t eat anything in between last night when I when brushed my teeth through when I slept to now, is it really necessary to brush my teeth? The thought: “YES! Or the dragon’s breath will kill you!” quickly shut down my last thought as I being to brush my teeth. I brush as if I could scrub away every food I’ve ever eaten or every drink I’ve ever drank was still on my teeth. 30 seconds in the front, 30 seconds in the back, 30 seconds on each side, honorable mention to my tongue. After spitting out all the nasty film from off of my teeth & bad breath germs from off of my tongue, I swish & gargle around some listerine & put my toothbrush back on its charging stand, feeling more refreshed than ever.
