Everyday that passes without Gurona found safe and sound is another day he takes as a personal failure. He lies in his bedroll during the day, finding it impossible to slip into any sort of trance or other state of mind. There’s no longer any sort of peace. He’s thinking of her always, and every stretch of a moment that passes furthers the distance between them.

He shoves the pillow onto his face as hears the rousing voices of the newest additions to the search party. If he tries hard enough, maybe he can drown them out.

“Astarion.” Nope. Absolutely impossible. “You’re not sleeping are you?”

He doesn’t move, and he stills his chest. Easy enough to feign death when it’s his reality. There’s a long period of quiet and he thinks maybe he’s fooled the intruder, and he can return to his bitter musings.

“You’re not very convincing, you know.” The pillow is pulled from his face and he glares at Cricket, one of the latest additions to their little search party. “People move when they sleep. They don’t lie there like a dead fish.”

“Lovely to see you too, darling.” He rips the pillow free from her grip and turns away from her. “Now if you don’t mind.”

“You’re what? Stewing in your misery?”

“Precisely.”

Had a conversation with my sister today about how you never really hear creative people talking about their rough days—the ones where they feel completely uninspired or everything you make sounds/looks like garbage. It can really convince you that you're the only one struggling, and somehow everyone else knows what they're doing. But... that can't possibly be true, right?

Honestly, I have off days all the time, but I don’t usually post about them. It feels… embarrassing, I guess? Like, if I'm not enjoying drawing, I must be doing something wrong. If you're passionate about something, then surely you never feel burned out or feel uninspired, right?

But the reality is that everyone has off days. Sometimes, you just don't feel like doing the things that usually bring you joy, and that's okay.

I’m sharing this because I want to remind myself and others that it's normal to have ups and downs, even with the things we love. It doesn't mean we're failing; it just means we're human.

Astarion’s more eager for the return of night than he has been in the past few days. Last night had been the hope he required. The dawn that rose to shore off a sea of darkness. The pains of love may have finally begun to lessen. Soon he would be home again, and the true nocturnal world would be at his fingertips again.

These days he has been stocked up on misery. So much hurt that laid waste to all that he was made up of. But now there was promise of something better. A long bumpy journey at present, but made all the more worth it if he had Gurona at his side. When he sees her again tonight he will be sure to whisk her away. Make a proud announcement of his love for her. Perhaps even make a solid plan for their future.

Hope. He’s feeling hopeful. How absurd.

Even when there was so much left unanswered. So much that wouldn’t be said aloud. Pain yet to be endured, but his love was certain, for better or worse. Nothing would change that.
