Things To Consider When Choosing Decorative Stone For Your Garden
Decorative stones or landscaping rocks have a myriad of uses around your home. From basic DIY craft projects to upping the curb appeal in your garden, you can choose rocks as mulch, ground cover, filler around flower beds or even walkways. The great thing about decorative rocks is they have the ability to naturally withstand the elements and will never lose their color or lustre. In fact, they don't attract common outdoor pests and they can help keep soil moist around shrubs or trees.
Landscape rocks for your garden come in a large number of shapes, textures, and even sizes. Smaller bags sold at your local hardware store are ideal for basic jobs such as creating curb appeal around flowers or your mailbox. In most instances, a basic bag contains about 0.5 cubic feet of stone, or roughly enough to cover 3 square feet about 2 inches deep. Larger jobs that include lining pathways will require a bulk purchase of stone. Larger quantities are sold by the pallet or in some instances, cubic yards.
It is important to consider two things when choosing rocks for a garden or landscaping design:
1. When certain decorative stones are used as mulch, they do retain heat and reflect back light. This can in turn dry out your plants.
2. Smaller rocks are easily shifted by the wind and rain.
Types Of Decorative Stone
There are quite a few options when it comes to choosing your type of decorative stone. The most obvious and common kind is crushed gravel. It yields a gray color and often contains sharp angular edges. It is a great base stone and its size makes it ideal for driveways and pathways.
For good drainage and interesting color, lava rocks are ideal. They have a natural reddish brown hue and are lightweight as well as porous. For a similar color but to use as mulch, brick chips are perfect. They are smaller in size and are made from chipped bricks.
River rocks are smooth like pebbles and come in smaller sizes. They offer ideal drainage and come in a neutral gray or white tone. Most importantly, they protect against soil erosion. Lastly, marble chips are perfect for basic houseplants or around fountains. They should never be used in highly acidic soil, however, because they can change the pH levels.
Decorative stone for your garden is available in large quantities as well as many different shapes and sizes. Ranging from small designer river rocks to heavy gravel, you can find the right combination for virtually any application in your landscaping project.
