How to choose a graphics card for a PC?
Tumblr media
The graphics card market has regained some of the excitement it contained years ago. And is that in recent months both NVIDIA and AMD have launched their most ambitious graphics processors. In addition, they are proposals that bet on very different strategies, so that users are forced to choose our next card not only because of its performance and its price but also keeping in mind which philosophy best meets our needs.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series aims to stand out thanks to the hardware implementation of ray tracing and the DLSS jagged edge removal algorithm, which uses artificial intelligence. However, AMD's Radeon VII GPU relies on the Vega 20 microarchitecture, which is not specifically geared towards gaming (although it performs very well even at 2160p), and also on the HBM2 memory. In this context, the objective of this article is simple: to help you find the graphics card that best meets your needs and best fits your budget.
The resolution we want to play determines our choice
Let's imagine that our starting point is a blank canvas. We have a relatively modern PC (it does not necessarily have to be the latest batch) and we have decided to improve it by installing a graphics card that allows us to enjoy current games in the best possible conditions. Where can we start? Ideally, we start by asking ourselves at what resolution we want to play and what rate of images per second we would like to achieve in a sustained way.
The graphics card that we choose will determine the relationship between these two parameters, but there is another element of our PC that restricts them in an even more forceful way: our monitor. It is of little use for us to invest our savings, for example, in a card with a GeForce GTX 1070 graphics processor if we have a Full HD monitor that works with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. In these conditions, the experience that this card will offer us will be very similar to one with a GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, but the latter will be significantly cheaper.
This example illustrates quite clearly the first conclusion we can reach: the ideal, if our budget allows it, is that we get the most expensive graphics card that allows us to get the most out of our monitor. And the two parameters of our screen that we are interested in looking at are the native resolution of its panel and its refresh rate. A graphics card that is capable of delivering a sustained frame rate equivalent to the monitor's maximum refresh rate when running at its native resolution will be a good choice.
Ideally, if our budget allows it, is that we get the graphics card that allows us to get the most out of our monitor
Later, when we are clear about which models fit this premise well, we can look at other characteristics of the candidates, such as their price, if they incorporate a GPU capable of carrying out ray tracing lighting or not, how much memory does it have and how much memory does it have? what type, how much it consumes, how much space will it occupy inside the box of our PC, etc.
The specification table below these lines summarizes the characteristics of the two most recent families of graphics processors from NVIDIA: the GeForce RTX 20 series and the GeForce GTX 16 family. The first of them brings together the chips that use Turing, the latest microarchitecture designed by this brand (a microarchitecture is a specific implementation of an architecture).
These GPUs are characterized, above all, by their ability to implement scene lighting using ray tracing (if games allow it), a technique that gives images a very realistic finish. And also because of the possibility of using DLSS technology, which uses deep learning to offer us a higher quality elimination of jagged edges ( antialiasing ).
The Tensor Cores work very fast with matrices, a type of calculation that is very important when running deep learning algorithms. And the RT Cores are the nuclei responsible for lighting scenes using ray tracing, a technique that can give images a photorealistic finish.
