Actually, I think it can be rather important to let your past define you.

I’ve done things I’m not proud of in my life. I’ve hurt people. I’ve said awful things. I’ve believed awful things. Doesn’t matter if I intended for it to happen or not. It still happened, and I was still a huge part of why it happened.

Instead of rejecting it, instead of saying “that wasn’t me” because it was, embrace it.

The key to embracing it is to induce one single word. But.

Yes, I hurt that person. But. I worked harder to make sure I don’t hurt anyone else like that again.

Yes, I said that awful thing. But. I learned better ways to communicate that don’t needlessly hurt people.

Yes, I was that awful thing. But. I educated myself on why these beliefs were harmful and am doing my best to be openminded.

Yes, I did that. But. I am better than that now because I chose to do better, worked harder to be better, and took the time to fix myself before I became that person forever.

The minute you realize your mistakes make you human and brushing them under the rug so people can’t see your messy past does more harm than good, the freer you’ll be. Embrace your older self. Use it as a reference point to how far you’ve grown.

Don’t just be better than everyone else. Show why you’re better than your past self. That’s the only competition you really have.
