I feel like I kept seeing a lot of Akane fans boast about how much "better" Akane was being treated in the final quarter of OnK compared to Kana but were we reading the same stuff lol. Not hating on Akane since I like her and at one point, she was my 2nd favourite character. But she was getting screwed over by being absent throughout most of the movie arc, when there was potential content that easily could've been written for her like paralleling the Ai/Nino dynamic with Kana/Akane which would've given more weight to the Akane/Nino confrontation. Or Ruby could've asked Akane for acting advice. Or we could've seen Akane reflect on how she uses her Ai persona during the movie arc.
I just lowkey feel all "Please be more upset on behalf of your best girl"

saying this as someone otherwise totally isolated from the oshi no ko fandom but
aqua totally didnt need to stab himself and die to convince people about hikaru. he could have just shoved hikaru into the freezing cold ass water, waited like 15mins and went "911!!! 911!!! my shitty dad jumped into dangerous rocky water when i told him about the movie!!! help :( " and then went to the concert
in fact this is what i believe happened now because i wanna be delusional

Kana suffering has become less funny of a meme considering her fate by the end of the manga, but these expressions are still so freaking S-Tier

For anyone who has seen Ao Haru Ride, I always thought we'd get a very similar scene between AquaKana because it just felt so fitting?? Like Kou's live-action actor is also the same as Aqua's in the OnK live-action adaptation. It felt like it was literally fated to happen!

I was pretty depressed when I first read Ch 164 because Aqua's been my favourite character of OnK for a long while. 😭 You can headcanon that the rest of the characters eventually get better, but you can't with Aqua because he's already dead! 😭
What makes it worse is that he has kind of become the main target of people's anger towards the ending as a whole with people calling him selfish and dumb, while I'm just so crushed that the character who I was rooting for years in finding happiness and letting himself heal had such a horrific end. It's hard to find fans to mourn with cause people are mostly angry with him while I'm just sad that my favourite character killed himself and had such little self-worth 😭😭😭Yeah, he was the only one who got any attempt at a proper closure to his character arc but at what cost lol
And tbh, I do prefer people aiming intense vitrol at characters rather than Akasaka because 1 is fictional and the author is an actual person & I kinda feel uncomfortable when people aim intense amounts of hate at creatives when their worst crime is they just wrote something badly while the ranting makes it sound like they actually committed a crime, but idk what is the most ideal course of action here😭
I guess I just realize which people are actually Aqua fans since I'd assume they wouldn't be as quick to turn on him.

The sheer force of vitrol Aquaruby shippers would send at anyone who would dare speak ill of that ship or not want it forced in their face 24/7 whenever the twins' characters were discussed - you would almost think that the romance genre in animanga would be a LOT more popular considering how shoujo romance animes basically died out and only recently starting coming back.
Like Sailor Moon does reincarnated soulmates trope - and does it better!

OnK LA Ending Predictions
It looks like after the interviews for the 15 year Lie, Ruby gets kidnapped? Like the characters in the below scenes of the Final Act's trailer are wearing the same outfit as what they wore during the interviews:
Notice also how Ruby seems to be wearing a different outfit from her interview than what she wears on stage. Almost as if they later had to reshoot her interview on a different date:
So that aligns with my prediction that Kana's graduation concert will likely be the final main event as opposed to focusing on Ruby performing at the dome.
I'm guessing that a while after Aqua dies, Kana's graduation concert is held. It's more fitting as a bittersweet final event since graduation concerts tend to be bittersweet for everyone involved.

I recall this interview that was released when the anime was airing. Akasaka said he decided the first and final act together, and then everything else in-between. Which I feel makes the most sense when you consider that Dark Ruby had maybe not been thought up yet when the ending was thought up, which is why the narrative acts that Ruby is super pure and wholesome.
A little devil whispered something in my ear.
"Maybe Akasaka killed off Aqua so he could avoid ending any shipping debates. With Aqua dead, fans can imagine that he's in love with Kana or Akane or Ruby, or even MEM-Cho if they want. Incest fans, tsundere fans, and SMP-age-gap fans alike can all imagine that their preferred love interest was Aqua's preference, too. He can leave Schrodinger's Incest in superposition for eternity. If Aqua survived, Akasaka would have to address the elephant in the room."
I'm not sure that last part is actually true, but the rest of the devil's argument is...insidious.
ngl there was a dark passenger inside me in like the 150-161 stretch that was saying basically the same thing and i dismissed it bc i was like. obviously akasaka isn't going to actually kill aqua off because that would be an awful ending <3
HA... HAHA.....
But anyway, I do think this is sort of the case, though with the cause and effect reversed - Akasaka and Mengo have both (apparently) known the manga would end with Aqua's death since at least around the time volume 7 was being published in Japan (according to an interview with Tsutaya) so it's less "Aka killed off Aqua so he didn't have to resolve any of the ships" and more "Because Aka already knew he was going to be killing Aqua off, he didn't have to resolve any of the ships", though the motivation is still more or less the same as you've laid it out.
Obviously take this with the fucking glacier of salt that is the fact that I obviously do not know Akasaka or his brain and I can't speak for his motivations but let's just say I would not be at all surprised if this was the case.

In the live-action adaptation, Akane finds out much later that Aqua mistakenly thinks his father is dead and then immediately tries researching through old Lala Lai records on who the actual culprit is which is a nice change since it was better seeing her actually being smart vs. finding out his identity by accident in the manga and the fans glazing her for that (???)

btw now the manga is over i can get this off my chest and speak my truth without fear and say that anyone who genuinely thought this series was going to end with aqua and ruby explicitly, canonically hooking up was fucking kidding themselves. like. yeah, sure guys. this massively mainstream property that is collabing and being sponsored by every family friendly brand under the sun is definitely going to end with the main character fucking his sister. be so fucking serious right now.

Thoughts on Doctor Aqua in an Aqua lives AU?
I think it's really cute! I don't necessarily disagree with everyone saying Aqua's shift to 'being a surgeon is my dream' was kind of abrupt when we get so much buildup to him genuinely loving acting, but my interpretation has always been that after what he did to himself during Tokyo Blade, he kind of poisoned acting for himself - Gotanda even straight up says that if he's going down this route, he'll never be able to enjoy acting again and sure enough, we never see him having fun with it after that.
So him deciding to become a doctor I think is a good alternate path for him. I like it as a representation of him inheriting Gorou's values while putting his own spin on them - Aqua and Ruby are, to a degree, the living embodiment of Gorou and Sarina's unrealized wishes and dreams, so Aqua going on to become a surgeon like Gorou always wanted to be I think was a good way of playing off that idea in the way the manga tends to do more often and more explicitly with Ruby.
that said. can you imagine how fucking funny it would be for this to happen. you go in for your operation and your surgeon is aqua hoshino. you have dvds of a tv show he was in once. he's explaining the procedure to you. you wonder if he paid for med school with acting royalties. when you go back to work and tell people that guy who was in love now once did your cholecystectomy and they tell you you're full of shit.
