Ibis use 'stress and wash' technique to eat poisonous cane toads

Ibis are often seen feeding on food dumped by humans, but citizen scientists are increasingly reporting the native species is dining out on toxic cane toads.   Gold Coast coordinator of Watergum's Cane Toads program Emily Vincent said the "stress and wash" method had been viewed numerous times by citizen scientists.

"It's quite amusing to watch and it's quite different from other native species and their methods of eating them," she said. "What this does is it makes the cane toads release toxins from the parotoid gland at the back of their neck, which is their defence mechanism when they're faced with predators.

Queensland Police Service cancels recruit training in face of low enrolment, despite high workforce attrition

The Queensland Police Service has cancelled one of its recruit training periods due to a lack of enrolments, raising questions about its ability to attract and retain staff. The intake was scheduled for December at the Oxley academy in Brisbane's south.

Its cancellation comes as the service desperately tries to draw recruits — waiving entrance requirements and test fees — and address cultural issues highlighted in recent reports.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll maintained there was a strong "pipeline" of interest for the force, while Minister Mark Ryan insisted the government was on track to grow the service by 1,450 new police officers.

Public transport use is still down on the Gold Coast — but don't blame COVID or commuters

Poor land-use planning and financial incentives are the Achilles heel to meeting public transport targets on the Gold Coast, an academic says. The Gold Coast City Council's annual transport snapshot has revealed residents are continuing to shy away from public services — patronage is down 35 per cent compared to pre-COVID levels.

Griffith University City Research Institute deputy director Matthew Burke says public transport gains made in the central Gold Coast are being dragged down by the city's northern suburbs.

"They're almost required to do everything by car, including burning a litre of diesel to go get a litre of milk," he said.

Qoin class action approaches crucial date in Federal Court

A drawn-out class action against the digital currency Qoin may soon reach a close, with those alleging misleading conduct required to pay security for court costs as a condition of continuing their claim.   Federal Court Justice Rodger Derrington has ordered the class action's lead applicants Its Eco Pty Ltd and Bethany Joy McManus to provide $750,000 to the court in security for the legal fees of the entities behind Qoin by Friday afternoon.

Those costs will be held by the court and paid if the class action goes to trial but does not succeed.

The class action, which is represented by Salerno Law, alleges that the entities behind Qoin have engaged in misleading or deceptive or unconscionable conduct under Australian Consumer Law, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 and the Corporations Act.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is on a mission to change a perception that some of its branches are "boys' clubs". The organisation is launching a survey to hear from current and former female members about sexual harassment, diversity, respect and leadership opportunities.

It comes after an independent review last year found SLSQ should continue to work on diversity and inclusion as there was a perception that clubs had a male-dominated culture.

Star Entertainment Group unsuitable to hold casino licence in Queensland, attorney-general finds

Star Entertainment Group has been found unsuitable to hold a casino licence in Queensland.   Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman made the finding and said the state's casino regulator will issue the company with a show cause notice as to why it should continue operating in Queensland.

It comes after the release of an independent review by former Court of Appeal Judge Robert Gotterson which made 12 recommendations, including that casino laws in Queensland be amended as a priority to allow for the appointment of a special manager to increase supervision and integrity of casino operations.

Queensland COVID-19 exposure sites list updated to include Jetstar flight from Cairns, locations in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast

A Jetstar flight from Cairns to Coolangatta last Friday has been flagged as a COVID-19 close contact exposure risk in the latest public health alert from Queensland Health.

It is one of numerous sites that have emerged in recent days in Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

All of the newest exposure sites are deemed to be either low risk or casual contact points.

Jetstar flight JQ967 travelled from Cairns to Coolangatta between 10:38am and 12:41pm last Friday, December 10.

Lost bushwalkers spend “wet and cold” night stranded in Hinterland

A group of bushwalkers have spent a wet and cold night stuck in bushland in the Gold Coast Hinterland waiting to be rescued.

The group of four, all foreign nationals, became lost in Cougal National Park at the back of Springbrook late on Sunday afternoon and contacted emergency services.

However, officials weren’t able to gain access to rescue them and instead advised the bushwalkers to shelter in place until crews could be sent out this morning.

Gold Coast infectious diseases expert appointed Qld top doctor

The head of infectious diseases at the Gold Coast University Hospital has been appointed as Queensland’s next Chief Health Officer.

Dr John Gerrard will take on the role from mid-December.

He replaces Dr Jeanette Young who was appointed Queensland’s Governor earlier this month. Her initial successor, Dr Krispin Hajkowicz quit the role just days before he was due to begin.
