Zero Distractions and Infinite Perseverance

Ever since 1951 when IIT Kharagpur admitted its first batch of students for higher education in engineering, the IIT and JEE entrance criteria have gone through major revision time and time again. What once started with only your academic performance in schools as a requirement for entry, has slowly evolved to a subjective to an objective and finally to the electronic MCQ test the students are required to give today.

While the platform and means of entry have evolved drastically, the level of difficulty of questions has surpassed even that. Although a subjective question paper back in the 1990s was by no means easy, it did not require the insane amount of preparation and pressure that the students of today go through.

At that time students with high intellect could clear the exam, with only a school level preparation while the others only needed some extra hours of practice and studying to get through it. No-one can state that to be the case now, with students studying a minimum of 10 hours a day starting from Class-11. They attend coaching on a daily basis with multiple weekly mock test papers, all in order to get the rank that’ll secure their futures.  

When someone qualified back in the early days, they only studied through standard textbooks such as NCERT to prepare. The pressure, competition, and academic level required for the test has grown at an exponential rate with the years gone by. The concept of mock tests that students give twice a week now didn’t even exist at the time.

Clearing the exam now without the aid of teaching experts and mock test practices would be considered a superhuman feat of intelligence; With the craze for engineering at its peak and more than 1 million students writing the tests per year so as to secure those 1 Cr. dream package at the IITs, the competition has never been higher and the rate of admittance of students never lower; This makes the JEE Mains and Advanced some of the most difficult exams in the world, period.

There is a YouTube video showing Australian professors reacting to one of the question papers, with Dr. Hutchinson stating that at his age he would probably leave the exam room crying. Not just that even international Youtubers create 20 plus minute long videos showing how to solve these questions. While the students in the exam have less than 5 minutes to solve those questions. Just type “difficult JEE question” on YouTube and see the result for yourself. Case in point-

This is why students need to start their preparation early on from 6th class onwards, in order to get ahead of the crowd. One such example of a successful student would be Kumar Satyam who recently got the 22nd rank in JEE Advanced this year. He started in Class-6 when most students would be worried about what’s for lunch, he was worried about the next chapter in Physics and Math.

Zero distractions and infinite perseverance, that’s what it takes to succeed in today’s world, be it the preparation for an exam or that for a job.
