Week 14 - Jeff Soto
Jeff Soto shows a lot of imagination in all his pieces. Some pieces show with a darker color palate and others with a bright color palate. I see his pieces as a kind of fantasy style because of all the creatures that he makes and give off a fun mood to them. I could also tell that he does graffiti as well because of the overall designs, colors, and flow of the images he creates.

Week 13 - Mariko Mori
In the series Pureland, Mariko’s pieces explore relationships with religion specifically Buddhism. A lot of her pieces show symbolism through imaginative reinterpretation, one being a lotus blossom, in a piece called Enlightenment Capsule, which is a symbol of purity and rebirth. Mariko’s pieces show elegance and beauty as well.

Week 12 - Martina Lopez
How Martina Lopez creates her images is astonishing. Lopez started creating these images in remembrance of her late family members in her view by taking old photos and placing them in different sceneries. Lopez creates a whole new image and giving new life to the images of her late family members.

Week 11 - Aziz and Cucher
The photos Aziz and Cucher are in a series called “Dystopia” and in every image the individual does not have facial features such as eyes and a mouth. The digital effects in these images look as if they erased the eyes and mouth then sort of blend the area as if those features were never there in the first place.

Week 10 - Denis Darzacq
This is just one of the photos Denis Darzacq has taken in his album called “Hyper.” These photos were taken in hypermarkets in Rouen and Paris with some of the individuals in the photos being street dancers. The pictures were taken as the individual is in motion creating a sort of allusion that the individual is floating. The photos in the series “Hyper” plays a lot with creating motion even with the background staying completely still which creates contrast.

Week 9 Post - Teun Hocks
Looking at Hocks’ pieces, it seems that he makes them by photoshop (placing himself in the image) and painting (or drawing) the background. Some of pieces have humor in them, like the 1st picture, which can bring a smile to people’s faces and also it has a fantasy/whimsical element to some of them. The humor within the pieces seem to be both optimistic and pessimistic things about everyday.
 Understanding how principles work:
1. Proximity - group related items together
2. Alignment - placing items in a neat way
3. Repetition - repeat some aspect of the design throughout the piece
4. Contrast - making items different from one another

Week 8 - Erik Johansson
In Erik Johansson’s work, a lot of his pieces are showing human advancements destroying the environment. The concerns he is trying to get across is how we are treating our environment is going to permanently damage. Narrative is a way someone views things in s certain way. There are influences of Escher and Magritte in his artworks. They all use surrealism in their artwork and give it a new narrative. Some examples of influences are Wasserfall by Escher and The Son of Man by Magritte.

Week 7 Post
Intertextuality - how works of art, or literature, are related and influenced by one another. An artist who uses intertextuality is Kehinde Wiley, he references old European paintings in his paintings and recreate them in different ways. Old traditional European paintings had white nobles as the center piece, but Wiley recreates the images by adding black culture into these paintings.

Week 6 Post
In all of Daniela Edburg’s pieces it’s all images of women having indulged in a food and/or product that has caused their doom. I am not sure of the context of these images but as a woman sometimes we are told, from society, to watch what we indulge in to watch our figure and from looking at some of these images that is what I am getting from it.

Week 5
Both Charles Cohen and Alexander Apóstol portray their pieces in unique and simplistic ways. In Apóstol’s photo, although the building is simple in design, it gives off a distinguished and humble look to it even though it has no windows which could give a feeling of isolation. Charles’ photos, is different in setting the mood than Apóstol’s because it gives off a very sexual mood even if with the outline of the person.
Typefaces are used in ways that can express different emotions and moods when brought into different types of environments. They can also express different associations in a trusting or mistrusting ways depending on how they are portrayed. It all depends on how someone perceives it. As I watched the Helvetica Documentary it explains why fonts are so important. Fonts are another form of art as they are able to produce personalities, convey moods, and add subjective matter into it. They help us interpret every day things such as signs and even handwriting.

Week 4 Post - Marcel Dzama
When looking at Dzama’s work it shows movement in his pieces as each one describes different stories. The inspirations come from Marcel Duchamp, fairy tale design, and Oskar Schlemmer, who creates puppet-like costumed masked figures. For a ballet that he did the costumes for he listened to the ballet’s music as he created the storyboards and designs for each character. In the artwork the palate is mostly made up of muted colors that give it a subtle tone to it and pleasing to the eyes.
