7 Reasons Why You May Need to Call a Locksmith in Columbia, SC
7 Reasons Why You May Need to Call a Locksmith in Columbia, SC
Almost 30% of people search less than a week for items they’ve lost. If you’ve misplaced your house keys, you can’t wait that long! Instead, hire a locksmith Columbia, SC residents trust.
When should you hire a locksmith? Keep reading to find out!
By reading this guide, you can prepare yourself for any situation. Then, you can call your emergency locksmith knowing they can take care of it. Googling “locksmith near me” now could save you time and stress in the future.
Don’t get locked out! Discover when to hire a locksmith with this helpful guide today.
1. You Lost the Key
We’ve all experienced it before: hunting down a lost item, frantic to find it when we need it most. Sometimes, you can find your lost keys or remote tucked within a couch cushion. In other instances, however, it’s disappeared from sight.
Every week, people misplace their TV remotes, keys, shoes, and phones. House keys are the number one item people spend over five minutes searching for. Wasting time searching for your keys could lead to consequences like:
Arriving late to work or school
Missing an appointment or meeting
Arguing with a significant other
Missing a plane, train, or bus
Spending up to $50 replacing lost items
The average American spends 2.5 days each year looking for lost items. Meanwhile, US households spend about $2.7 billion every year on replacement costs.
If you’ve lost your keys, don’t waste time or money trying to hunt them down. Instead, call a locksmith Columbia, SC homeowners trust. Your locksmith can help you save valuable time and stress.
You won’t have to break into your own home to get back inside, either.
In fact, most people call an emergency locksmith to get back into their own homes.
Don’t let lost house keys cause unnecessary stress in your life. Instead, Google “best locksmith near me” and find a locksmith you can trust. They’ll replace your missing key and change the locks.
Then, you can find peace of mind (if not your lost keys). You won’t have to worry about someone breaking in. Your locksmith will ensure your home is safe and secure again.
2. You’re Breaking Up
Breakups are never easy. Whether you’re separating, getting a divorce, or watching a friend move out, call a locksmith company. It’s best to have the locks changed right away.
People don’t always think clearly after a breakup, even if it’s amicable. Don’t risk your safety or wellbeing. Otherwise, adrenaline, anger, or hurt could lead someone to do something drastic.
For example, an ex might break into your home. They could even steal your possessions or vandalize your property.
Don’t risk it. Instead, call a locksmith right away. Your Columbia, SC locksmith will change your locks and provide you with new keys.
With their help, you can avoid potential injuries, lost possessions, or another emergency.
3. You’re Moving On
You’re all packed up and ready to move into your new home. Before you settle down, there’s one last thing you need to do: change the locks.
If you recently moved into a previously occupied home, call your locksmith in Columbia, SC. They’ll change the locks for you. That way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re the only person with the key.
Otherwise, the previous homeowners might hold onto their copy. They might break in and steal your possessions.
Instead of risking it, call a locksmith company in Columbia, SC. Put it at the top of your move-in to-do list! The sooner you call, the sooner you’ll feel comfortable in your new home.
4. Someone Borrowed a Key
We often lend out our house keys to friends “just in case.” Some people even lend keys to service providers, temporary tenants, and repairmen. Unfortunately, not everyone gives the key back.
If you loaned out a copy of your key, call a locksmith company. You don’t want too many copies floating around. Instead, change the locks.
Otherwise, someone might use your key to break in. A service provider or repairman could see your key as an opportunity.
Protect your home, your belongings, and your family. With a fresh lock, you won’t have to worry.
5. Someone Burglarized Your Property
After someone breaks into your home, you might not feel safe. There are two people you’ll need to call right away: the police and an emergency locksmith.
Talk to your locksmith about every entry point into your home. They can help improve your property’s overall security. With their help, you’ll have peace of mind.
Make sure to have them change the locks. You might want to consider stronger locks for additional security, too.
If the burglars tampered with the locks to get in, there’s a chance they caused serious damage. A malfunction with the lock could leave your home vulnerable. Burglars might consider you an ideal target in the future as a result.
Instead, start searching for “the best locksmith near me.” Your emergency locksmith can help by improving your home’s security. You can rest easy knowing your home is safe from burglars.
6. The Lock Looks Old
Does your lock sometimes get stuck? Is it stubborn, old, or looking worn down? Remember, you don’t want to leave any vulnerabilities throughout your home.
A thief could see an old, weak lock as an opportunity.
An old lock could prove inconvenient, too. What if you stepped out to get the mail, left the oven on, and can’t get back? What if your child is left inside?
You could waste precious seconds trying to struggle with a stubborn lock.
Instead, call your locksmith company. They’ll update your locks to make sure they function properly.
7. Years Have Gone By
When was the last time you changed your locks? If it’s been a while, talk to your local locksmith. They can help you review the latest options, including keypad or Bluetooth locks.
With their help, you can improve and upgrade your security.

2020 hasn’t been the year anyone expected.
2020 hasn’t been the year anyone expected.
March 26, 2020
Don’t worry we are still open, and we have no plans to change that. No one knew we would be talking about a global pandemic shutting down the world at the beginning of 2020, but here we are. What does all of this mean for small businesses?
We, as a nation, are in unprecedented times right now. The leaders of our government have made decisions that, before now, were never considered. Executive orders and large spending bills are being passed, not just on a federal level, but also at a state and local level. Medical services of all kinds are being overwhelmed with patients and shortages of protective equipment. Small businesses of all categories are feeling the stress as well. In several states and municipalities, non-essential businesses are being required to close their doors to prevent the spread of this terrible virus.
Most small businesses don’t have a residual stream of money coming in. Many service industry businesses stop making money when the phone stops ringing. Restaurants and small shops stop making money when their customers stop coming in to purchase the items they sell. The unintended consequences of stay at home orders, is the burden that is placed on small businesses.
Small businesses are the driving force behind our economy in the United States. Large corporations rely on small businesses to provide them with materials and services. Many small businesses sell their products on websites like Amazon.com and through other large retailers and distributors. When small businesses are shut down this will cut off the supply chain for everyone.
The employees of these small businesses are on edge every day wondering if they will continue to have a job. Some small businesses have cash on hand to handle a small shut down and continue to pay employees, however, many do not. Employees are going to be out of work and either dip into savings or rely on government subsidies like unemployment to make up their losses.
Businesses are trying to adapt to a world without customers, they are moving to sell their products online, they are pushing delivery, and some are relying on mobile door to door style services. Small businesses don’t intend to be annoying with their constant ads and posts, but mass marketing is the last bit of hope that many small businesses have to stay afloat. How we connect with customers will change forever because of this situation. It’s more of the unintended consequences of decisions that our leaders must make that will shape our nation moving forward. Be patient with businesses as they figure out how to navigate this new normal.
Irmo Lock Company created a mobile business model several years ago, this aspect of our business has allowed us to stay in front of the problem and maintain work even when others around us are coming to a stall. We will remain open at full capacity for as long as we are legally allowed. Irmo Lock Company has been around for over 30 years on a reputation of doing what we promise for the price we promised. Our company has survived many economic downturns because of our loyal customer base. We wouldn’t be here today without your support. We ask that you please continue to support all local small businesses so that we can all do our part to keep our economy going!

Why Do Automotive Keys Cost So Much?
Why Do Automotive Keys Cost So Much?
January 27, 2020
Locksmiths are known for being able to help anyone with a key related issue, including automobile keys. In the era of high security and transponder keys, getting a new auto key has become increasingly more difficult and pricier even for the dealerships or locksmiths who produce and program the keys.
Let’s start with the basics.
What is a transponder and/or high security key?
Before the late 90’s most cars had a standard blade key with a varying assortment of cuts that would help deter criminals from stealing a vehicle. Cars back then could be easily “hotwired”, and the ignitions could be picked to start the car without a key. To get a copy of a blade key requires a simple trip to your local locksmith with or without the vehicle.
All of this has changed with the creation of transponder and high security keys. A transponder key is a key that houses a chip in the plastic head. The chip inside of the key contains a serial number that must be programmed into the cars on-board computer. The chip uses an RFID signal to communicate with the ignition sensor to allow the car to crank when the key is in the ignition. High security keys use a combination of a transponder chip and unique “Laser” cuts. A laser cut key is actually a metal blade key that is cut using a precision CNC machine. The unique cuts and the transponder act together to create almost unlimited possibilities.
However, nothing is 100% secure and criminals have developed ways to break into vehicles, even ones with transponders and high security keys.
What makes getting a key copy so difficult and expensive today?
The microchips that are embedded in the head of the key are expensive. In many situations an OEM key is the only key that contains the proper chip. Programming the transponder to the car after the key is cut takes special equipment and skills. Many dealerships do not have the ability in shop to cut keys, they either rely on locksmiths or they have to special order a key from the factory which could take weeks. Reputable automotive locksmiths can typically make a key for your vehicle on the same day or within a couple of days, depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
How can Irmo Lock Company help?
Irmo Lock Company has been helping people with their automotive key needs for 30 years! We have technicians on staff that have the knowledge and expertise to cut and program keys from almost every manufacturer foreign and domestic, including European. In most cases our standard prices are cheaper than the dealership and we can typically have your key cut and programmed within a few hours. Give us a call 803-781-9447 or come by our shop!

Why do you need a locksmith?
Why do you need a locksmith?
March 9, 2020
The locksmith trade has existed, in some form, thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians created a simple pin tumbler lock out of wood. Since then the locksmith industry has transformed and evolved. Today, locks are typically made from metal and when installed properly they can provide a great deal of security.
Locksmiths are known for solving a wide variety of key related problems. Most professional locksmiths can gain entry through a locked door without causing any damage to the door or lock. A locksmith will also be able to service or repair existing hardware that you have, prolonging its life and reducing waste. A locksmith typically has the tools to properly install new hardware, like knobs, deadbolts, and hinges, to your home or business.
Like most technology, locks and physical security are moving into the digital age. Metal blade keys are becoming a thing of the past, new locks allow you to use your phone, a pin code, or even a fingerprint as a key. In commercial settings it is becoming more common to use RFID enabled ID badges or fobs to gain access through entry doors. All this technology is, in most cases, allowing users to have real-time information and peace of mind in the security of their property.
The newer generations strive to have instant gratification and technology is allowing that to become a reality. Some of the late model vehicles come with apps that allow you to remotely secure your doors, raise and lower your windows, and in some instances start the vehicle. With so much emphasis on technology, how can a locksmith help?
A highly trained locksmith will have the tools and experience to make repairs and recommendations to secure your valuables and property. Locksmiths that have adapted and evolved with the technology will know and understand the applications, biometric locking devices, and high security measures you are looking for.
Irmo Lock Company has the tools, experience, and the staff to handle the growing demand for technology. We have a 30-year reputation of getting the job done right the first time. Come by our shop or give us a call and set up an appointment, we would love to be a part of your physical security plan.

Your key won’t turn in the ignition?
Your key won’t turn in the ignition?
March 2, 2020
If your key won’t turn in the ignition and you are stuck in a random parking lot thinking all hope is lost, don’t worry, YET. The most common cause is that the steering wheel is in a bind. The steering wheel lock is designed to make your car harder to steal and easier to tow. Ensure your vehicle is in park then follow the steps below.
STEP ONE
AVOID using brute force. First, try inserting the key into the ignition and turn the steering wheel left and right while attempting to turn the key forward to the “ON” position. This should unlock the steering wheel and allow the ignition to turn.
STEP TWO
Sometimes there are other factors involved like dirt and debris in the lock cylinder. DO NOT put anything other than the key into the ignition. Insert the key into the ignition and remove it several times. Then repeat step one. If it still isn’t free, try spraying a small amount of WD-40 into the ignition, then insert and remove the key several times.
STEP THREE
If you have access to a second set of keys to your vehicle try using them. Sometimes the keys become worn from repeated use over time. Using a different set of keys may allow the pins to line up properly.
If the steps above did not work, it could be a sign of other mechanical issues.
Remember, if you don’t feel comfortable with any of these steps, to contact a highly trained locksmith. Irmo Lock Company has technicians available 24hrs a day to help!

3 Situations That Call For An Emergency Locksmith
3 Situations That Call For An Emergency Locksmith
Wouldn’t life be so much easier if we could predict the future? We wouldn’t get caught off guard by our AC unit crashing on us or a tire blow out on the highway. Just like we also wouldn’t lock our keys in our cars or our homes, causing a whole domino effect of emotions and situations, from stress to missed work meetings.
Unfortunately, we can’t predict the future, and these things all happen to us, whether we like it or not. Luckily, when it comes to lockout and other emergency locksmith situations, you can take comfort in knowing that professional help is just a phone call away with 24/7 locksmith services.
Below, we’re talking about the top three situations that require the assistance of an emergency locksmith and what you can do to be prepared for them.
Situation # 1: You’re Locked Out of Your Home
While a recent study found that nearly one and five people don’t lock their doors when they’re home, the rest of us certainly do. Unfortunately, while doing this provides those of us who keep our doors locked with any extra layer of security, it also increases the chances of getting locked out.
Whether you dashed out the door in a hurry for work or it was a fluke accident, we’ve all felt that dreaded panic when we realize we’re outside and our keys are inside. And although this situation is emergent in nature, it doesn’t warrant a call to 911. Instead, you can call your local locksmith in Columbia SC to come to help you quickly and easily get back into your home and back on with your life.
Situation # 2: You Locked Your Keys in Your Car
According to AAA, nearly four million Americans lock their keys in their car each year. So, if this happens to you, you’re certainly not alone. These mishaps happen when you’re at your home, out at the grocery store, or even when on vacation. As long as the situation doesn’t involve an animal or child locked inside the car along with the keys, there’s no need to alert authorities. Instead, an emergency locksmith should be your first call. A professional locksmith will be able to get you back in your car, replace any lost kets, and repair any doors or locks that may be damaged. And the best part is, they’ll come to meet you where you are – usually within 30 minutes or less!
Situation # 3: You’re Locked Out Of Your Business
When you’re a business owner, a lockout situation can become tense, quick. Whether you own a restaurant or a manufacturing plant, nothing is business as usual if you and your employees can’t get inside. Or, perhaps you have a locked safe that you can’t remember the combination for or you misplaced the keys for, a locksmith in Columbia SC can help with that, too!
Get The Help You Need From The Experts You Can Trust
If you’re faced with the unfortunate event of locking yourself out of your home or vehicle, don’t panic! The help you need is waiting on the other side of a search for an emergency locksmith in Columbia SC.
The team at The Modern Locksmith is committed to helping our community get back into their homes, cars, and businesses fast so that you can get back to life with minimal disruption to your day.

How Much Does a Locksmith Cost?
How Much Does a Locksmith Cost?
Chances are, you don’t consider the question “how much does a locksmith cost?” regularly. In fact, you probably only ask this question when you’re faced with an urgent situation.
As with any service-based business, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all, blanket price that you can expect a locksmith to charge when you call them out for help. The price you’ll pay will depend greatly on several factors.
From the service being rendered to the extent of the work required, many variables will affect the price. In an effort to give you an idea of how much a locksmith costs, we’ll take a look at the various services available and what you can expect.
What Kinds of Services Do Locksmiths Offer?
If you’re one of those lucky people who have yet to frantically search for a “locksmith near me” when you’re in a bind, then you may not know all the services that they offer. Or, maybe you’ve only ever used a locksmith to retrieve the car keys that you accidentally locked inside.
The skillsets of a locksmith are very diverse and we often deal with jobs that you may not traditionally connect with a locksmith. There are four main services that most locksmiths, like ourselves, offer to our customers. Let’s explore:
Automotive locksmith – An automotive locksmith can handle all auto-related lock services. This type of locksmith work is usually related to lock and key-related issues or transponder chip issues. You can get help with everything from rekeying ignitions to retrieving your car keys from your trunk and car key replacement.
Residential locksmith – Residential locksmiths are who you want to call for lock and key-related issues that occur around your home or property. So, if you dash out your door, locking it behind you, only to remember that your keys are still on the counter – this is a great example of a time that a residential lockout service would be required. They can also help with things like deadbolt installations, smart locks, broken key extraction, and more.
Commercial locksmith – Commercial locksmiths generally handle services that relate to businesses and buildings that have commercial-grade locks and other systems that require a trained locksmith to handle properly. They’ll handle your keycard systems, access control, security, heavy-duty locks, and more.
Smart Home Automation – This is a service that you may not automatically associate with a locksmith, however, as technology has changed, so have the service offerings of many locksmith companies. Smart home protocols like smart locks, smart doorbells, security cameras, and more can be handled by specialized locksmith companies.
What Factors Will Influence Locksmith Columbia SC Pricing?
When it comes to answering the question of how much does a locksmith cost, there are some factors and variables that will play a role in the answer to that question. And this shouldn’t come as a surprise based on the sheer number of services that locksmiths provide and the complexities of each.
Here are some important factors that will likely play a role in how much you’ll pay for a Columbia SC locksmith:
The Complexity of the Job
The complexity of the task that you need a professional locksmith for will be a big determining factor in the price. Some jobs are relatively easy and routine and will require a short period and limited expertise. For example, a simple lockout requires little time and specialized skill.
On the other hand, a home automation system or a residential safe lockout will require a higher degree of specialized knowledge and more time, therefore the cost will be higher. That said, for the more complex tasks, you should always take advantage of free quotes from your local locksmith so that you know what the cost will be upfront so that you’re prepared.
Hours Needed to Complete the Job
The complexity of the job is usually directly related to the hours needed to complete it. The price you’ll pay for a locksmith will be dependent on how much time it takes to complete the task.
For example, a lock rekey will take longer than a duplicated key, so it will cost a bit more money.
Average Locksmith Cost
Now that we talked a bit about the variables that will play a role in cost, here’s a general breakdown of ballpark costs. On average, you can expect the following from the most common call-out locksmith services:
$60 – $120 Open Car or House
$75 – $130 Rekey Locks
$75 – $200 Change Locks
Take Advantage of Free, No-Obligation Quotes
The best and most efficient way to understand the costs that you can expect when you enlist the professional service of a locksmith is to give them a call first to get a quote. The team at The Modern Locksmith, for example, always provides our customers will completely free quotes for service before we get to work so that you know what to expect.
Unfortunately, when you’re in a bind, you might not have the time and willingness to call around and get quotes from all the results in your “locksmith near me” search results and you’re more likely to accept the price of the first business you call. In this case, it’s wise to have an affordable locksmith in Columbia SC on speed dial to prevent overpaying for service.
Call The Locksmith Columbia South Carolina Trusts Most
When it comes to finding a locksmith that you can rely on both in an emergency and otherwise, you must choose a team you can trust. You need to know that not only the work will be completed correctly, but that it’ll get done fast, and that it won’t break the bank.
When you call The Modern Locksmith, our professional team will provide you with a quote for service immediately so that you know what the cost will be upfront. We’re open 24/7 and we take pride in providing high-quality service at prices that our local community can afford. tel:855-466-5625

The Best Smart Locks for 2020
The Best Smart Locks for 2020
You did it again. You rushed out the door to work, locking the door behind you, only to realize that you left the keys inside.
Now you’re locked out of your home and car and you’re late for work. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there, but the good news is that a simple home update could ensure this never happens to you again!
You can finally say bye to that bulky keyring and take that hide-a-key out from under your porch planter because smart locks are the latest and best thing for home security and convenience.
Why Choose a Smart Lock?
If the scenario we described above rings any bells, then you know the frustration and stress of being locked out of your home. Or, that gut-wrenching feeling of leaving for a trip and questioning whether or not you locked up your home before you got on the plane.
When you have a smart home door lock, you don’t have to bug your neighbor or family member to come to check your doors, you can access your lock from your smartphone, anytime, anywhere!
Electronic door locks provide a variety of security and convenience features that blow traditional locks out of the water. These locks will allow you to monitor everyone who enters or leaves your home, giving you peace of mind and control over your property.
How Do They Work?
Smart home locks allow you to open your door without having a physical key present. They are controlled through a smartphone app. Most models also have a physical keypad on the lock so that you can enter your access code and gain entry that way, too.
Your lock connects to your home’s WiFi network, which allows it to receive the inputted code or the smartphone command that tells it to lock or unlock the door.
Some smart lock setups require you to take out your old, standard locking system completely, while others will fit right over your existing lock system. Either way, you’re best advised to enlist the help of a professional locksmith to get the job done right.
Smart locks can also be integrated into a complete smart home automation system, so they can work together with other security components of your home. Again, check with your local smart home locksmith to ensure you’re getting the proper setup for optimum security.
Are Smart Locks Necessary?
You may be thinking, “we’ve lived this long without smart locks, do I really need one now?”
Think of it this way, your standard house key locks and unlocks your door, that’s it. And you have to remember to carry it around with you or else you better have your local locksmith on speed dial. Call Now
If you’re considering beefing up your home’s security, giving it more than just the basic functionality, a smart lock is a way to go. Here are some of the most compelling reasons to consider a smart door lock on your home:
You can control access to your front door no matter where you are. When you have one of these innovative locks, your phone doubles as a key. So, there’s no longer a need to rush home at lunch to make sure that the package gets delivered or dash home to double-check that you locked your door.
A simple code replaces your need for keys. Anyone who’s ever stood at their front door digging through their purse or briefcase for their keys will rejoice when all they need to do is simply punch in a custom code and, voila!
You no longer need that hide-a-key (that probably isn’t all that hidden, anyway). You also no longer need to have multiple copies of your front door key floating around, waiting for them to land in the wrong hands.
You’ll get notifications that will remind you to lock up. Most smart locks will alert you if you left and forgot to lock your door and the best part is, you can simply lock it up with a press of a button in your app if that’s the case.
There are so many compelling reasons to ditch your key and get a modern smart home lock, you simply can’t beat the convenience and security this technology offers!
