Okay so in my tags I was sarcastically asking if the community bought her a car or something to "help out in a big way" and turns out that is exactly what they did. The commenter is absolutely right that this would have been framed as a horror story of a communist state, and I don't want this to be seen as a feel-good story because the community stepped up. The community shouldn't have had to. Public transport should be available to everyone. Your options shouldn't have to be have a car or walk. But for the cynics like me who expected the story to be that they bought the lady some nice hiking boots or something, no. They actually did make a difference in this womans life.

I find it funny when queer fantasy stories are written in a setting where homophobia doesn't exist, but there's a ~forbidden romance~ element coming from some completely different, fantastical prejudice. Like
