This meeting was no accident she was sure, yet she loathe to transcribe the actions of her captors as fate. Fate had always been the cruel one anyway, though she was quickly gathering that might be to this one’s tastes.
“Hah.” Short, bitter. There was little joy in that laughter. “No, I find comfort in strength.” And that was certainly true, perhaps the most honest statement she’d issued since her arrival. Of course it was not a comfort currently available and despite being generally well composed, her anger seethed below the surface, turned to a white hot focal point like a razor’s edge. Occasionally it vented to the surface.
“Anything you perceive is merely a side effect.” She pulled the hood back over her head. A calming exercise. Catharsis. Ineffective.
“And do not presume to know me or anything I have been through. I can’t imagine to what kind of training you refer.”
Strength. Is that, perhaps...what he used to sound like? Such arrogance. Such a foolhardy attitude. That endless pursuit of power, what had it ever brought, if not grief and pain? Maul’s eyes narrowed, and he turned away from the woman, seemingly staring off into space -- unconsciously, his teeth worked at his lower lip, a coping mechanism, perhaps.
“...Lying doesn’t become you. You cannot wash away the stench...of the Sith.” If it were anyone other than him, perhaps she would have been right. He would not possibly have known anything about her past -- but it wasn’t. It was him. He was himself; Maul fought the urge to pound his skull with his fist. Even now, the madness hadn’t entirely left him. He needed to stay focused.
Once again, he faced her, yellow eyes burning. “...You speak like an apprentice, still...this world truly is fascinating. Always two, always two...which means, you are from another time than I. What is...your name?”

He’s definitely bleeding. It isn’t thick in the air or anything, but when the man moves Badou can smell it whaft off him. Lips a thin line, he saddles up to his side and takes his arm.
“You don’t look like the type to keep your word….but if you died out here and I walked off it’d be shit karma I guess. Or there’s camera’s that’d see me.”
Maul chose to ignore that first comment -- there were other, more important things at stake here. Not his life, of course; in comparison to what he’d experienced in the past, this was just a scratch, something he’d sleep off...but this was an unfamiliar place, and for all the Zabrak knew, there could be more enemies everywhere.
Grunting in discomfort even as he put his arm over the boy’s shoulder to balance himself, Maul finally stands, looking furtively in every direction.
“...You’re speaking too much. If we can just get moving...”

You toss a rock into a cold pond. It scrapes helplessly against the ice, unable to break the surface and sink.
“If you’re watching,” you say flatly, feeling eyes on your back, “you won’t find anything entertaining here.”
“...”
Maul was watching. He had bathed in the darkness for his entire life -- perhaps it could be said that all he knew was negativity. He was attuned to it, and it called out to him.
Unconsciously, he followed, every time, without fail.
“...You are unafraid of the cold and dark? It’s an uncanny world, to be out in the open like this at such a quiet hour...” The man with crimson skin reached down to pick up a rock as well, looking over the pebble in his hand before tossing it onto the ice as well. It was almost as though he were expecting something different to happen.

Maul grunted at the girl’s words, his attention clearly elsewhere as he tended to his metal legs, bending them at the knee one after the other, then at the ankles, making certain that they both worked properly before letting out a sigh and leaning back against the wall. He stayed like that for a moment, just staring aimlessly upwards, seemingly thinking about absolutely nothing, then shook his head and began to painstakingly stand again, fake legs quivering as he struggled to maintain his balance.

She knew not which race addressed her, but that mattered little. The outside was irrelevant when what she felt in the air was so familiar; she had no doubt it’s what he held inside too.
Hm. She knew there was those amongst the stars who held a natural affinity for the darkness. Was he simply one familiar with the dark, or had his training been more… Specific. This was not her master, nor was it her apprentice. Was the cities rumoured temporal abilities coming in to play?
Idly, she realised she’d never had to hunt down a rival before.
“The opposite, in fact; It’s what keeps my breath at ease.”
“Quite the bold one, aren’t you? Addressing me so openly. You’re suspicious and I can tell you; you’re not wrong.”
Bold? No. Anyone would have a hard time classifying a man like Maul as “bold.” He was, however, tired. Jaded. Bitter. Slowly burning on the inside with a rage that had been stoked in his heart for decades, cultivated and refined by the shadows around him. He wanted nothing to do with the posturing, the sick games of intrigue that came with the role of a Dark Side-user...all Maul wanted were answers.
Shaking his head, the Zabrak folded his arms behind his back, cold eyes trained on the woman.
“I see -- you find comfort in the dark. Perhaps your training...was too relaxed, then.”
To be trained in the Dark Side was to know pain, to know suffering; to never find solace in anything, no matter how hard one tried, no matter how much one clawed at their flesh and howled at the stars -- this was all Maul knew.
“...Or, could it be, you’ve simply forgotten? Could it be that time truly heals all wounds...?”
