I am HAUNTED by this man

the decision to include a black kid in charles' racist friend group, the friend group that killed him, was definitely. a choice. and that doesn't even mean it was a bad one! it honestly adds a meta textual element to the story, and also acts as bit of a hint towards how charles himself may have acted when he was a part of it - except:

quality on this image isn't really good, but I promise that it's the same guy. so what is he doing here? this is the second time he's participated in a racial hate crime - but why? is he afraid? is he charles' counterpart? does he know what they'll do to him, if he doesn't participate?

surely someone’s talked about the fact that in the doom patrol version of dead boy detectives, which was also written by steve yockey, the reason that they’re brought into the plot is because the doom patrol cast’s friend Danny the Street, a sentient non-binary street who gets their energy from the happiness of their perpetual cabaret that hosts drag performances, and has throughout the show been shown to appear to lgbt people in need, shows up specifically to charles

sometimes i think about Charles confessing he is in love with Edwin. And i want it to be the complete opposite of the confession in hell.

First its in the office, when both are safe and in no hurry. Charles is super confident everything will turn out great and Edwin will totally be happy.

Expect it doesnt work that way, when Charles confesses Edwin gets mad: starts saying that Charles cannot want him like that because he likes girls, that they are friends, that Charles feels lonely because with Crystal it didnt work out...

i want a Charles who has to prove to Edwin that he means it, that he is IN love.

Most importantly Charles kisses Edwin to shut him up.

it is not pretty, and you had no say in how red-tipped brushes brought it to life. here you stand, a cliff between your loves and you—safe, they are safe, their faces are full of fear but they are safe. here you are, beautiful shell cracked apart to reveal the claws and teeth beneath; accepting a crown made up of snarls and broken bones, your father's hand a brand where your shoulders used to be.

it is ugly, you think as anger burns you up red-hot. a beast where the lie once stood, a violent thing built out of all they need to be safe—made up in all that terrifies them most. ugly and weighed down by whatever stones fill up your throat as they flinch away from you.

an ugly truth for ugly tasks, a monster to keep those halo-framed treasures safe between your claws.

what good is pretty when ugly barely does the trick?

—fresh out of the forging fire, you realise you have become what you fear most. the double-edged sword of you draws blood where it guards the centre of the universe.

Here I have a confession: I think that Catwin, Montwin, and Cryland ALL work best from a storytelling pov if they end where they do by episode 8, as somewhere between bittersweet and tragedy depending on the relationship. This is not to say that I didn't expect a cameo from the Cat King or Monty in season 2 (hell, a single episode in Port Townsend might have been a fun call-back), but I genuinely came out of episode 8 over a year ago thinking that the Cat King and Monty had played their roles kinda perfectly for a one-season major character arc (even if that meant ending Monty on a tragedy and the Cat King with a bittersweet moment of connection/goodbye). And then as for Crystal, that kiss between and Charles really felt like a goodbye kiss as much as the one between Edwin and the Cat King had; they'd both admitted that they weren't good for each other before, and there's the whole alive/dead thing to deal with.

Like, this isn't to say that I thought that Charles and Edwin were going to get together immediately (God no, they've both got personal shit to work through) or that neither of them was going to date anyone else, just that I didn't think that it was going to be any of the three love interests from season 1. Not because of problematic/discourse reasons, but just because. The narrative kinda worked that way and felt like a solid ending to each of those three arcs.

The Catwin/Cat King discourse is so funny to me as someone who doesn't like him. We don't KNOW that Edwin is mentally 16, we don't KNOW that TCK is mentally fuckin. 500 or whatever. I personally don't like him cause he feels creepy to me but we're not the creators and we can't say for certain that he's a predator or if he was or wasn't romantically attracted to Edwin etc etc. Like or dislike TCK or Catwin your opinion and view of supernatural morals isn't fact. This goes for both sides of it btw 🤨 some of y'all TCK stans act like anyone who doesn't like him is some idiotic homophobe and some of y'all TCK haters act like anyone who likes him is immediately an immoral pedophile defender.
