Tackling Fishing Minigames
Recently, I was asked to lend my angler’s intuition and knowledge of fishing minigames to someone working on a personal project. To help baseline the conversation, I decided to deconstruct the aspects of fishing in games that I found made a difference for my enjoyment.
For me, this resulted in:
The Wait
The Cast
The Hook
The Retrieve
The Requirements to Catch
Environment
Time
Gear
Fish Uniqueness
Rarity
Measure
Visuals
Collectability
Fishing Methods
Game Value
A pretty extensive — and probably not even all-encompassing — look at the mechanics that work towards my enjoyment of the genre. I’ll break down each of these aspects in future posts (which I’ll then update this list with some links) so you all get a better idea of what I’m chatting about.

Photo
Art is magical to me, and photography is one of those schools of magic. A couple weeks back, I sat with Iki Ikram and was truly spoiled with these amazing photos. Iki really does a great job of capturing texture and tone, and I was really impressed with the range of both they found in this set.

It’s been a while since I’ve used Tumblr — like, a long time — but I feel like it’s a space that still gives solid opportunity to share and collect. So, that’s what I’m going to do here, share some things I enjoy, collect some inspiration, and leave some musings as I go through the year. But first to delete some of the nearly thirty tumblr accounts that I made to “lock down the url” in the early 2010s.
