Bavarian Pretzel Origins: Classic Oktoberfest Snack
Many people love pretzels, and there are many variations of this appetizing snack. The word 'preshoo' in German means 'to twist,' so it's no wonder that the snack is named after this twisting motion. In Germany, pretzels are traditionally served with a sweet sauce called 'Sauerkraut.' This sauce is made from a type of cabbage that's typically served with German meals. In the USA, pretzels are usually served with a salty cheese sauce called 'Cheese-It.' German immigrants introduced this condiment to the US so their American counterparts could enjoy a similar meal.
The typical pretzel is triangular in shape and has a soft interior and crispy exterior. The twisted exterior gives the snack its name as it resembles a person's hairstyle when it's not straightened. Pretzels are sold fresh or frozen and can be eaten either hot or cold. Many people like to eat pretzels dipped in melted cheese or mustard. They're also commonly served with a side of honey or fruit preserves. In Germany, pretzels are often served with other treats such as candies or sugar cubes. People also eat pretzels with their meals at restaurants. Despite the many variations, most Germans still prefer eating pretzels with beer at Oktoberfest.
It's easy to make pretzels at home since there's only one ingredient needed: flour dough wrapped around a shape-forming tool. Germans call this shape-forming tool a 'sparkle' since it forms the typical triangular shape of the snack. The sparkle is made of steel and is shaped like an inverted U with two long sides. Instead of burning their houses down, past German populations soldered iron plates to the tops of their sparkles so they could transport the snack easily. Today, this transportation method is still used by traditional pretzel makers known as 'bakeries.' Sausage makers also use it when baking their pretzels in coal ovens for an authentic flavor profile. After the sparkle is made, it's coated in an egg wash which gives it an amber color and makes it more appealing to eat. These preparations usually last several hours, but past generations waited even longer for these treats to form into actual pretzels.
Various styles of pretzels are now available throughout the USA and Europe as well. These include soft-baked, deep-fried and honey-glazed varieties. Some American cities have their own unique styles such as Seattle's 'cinnamon bun' variation or New York City's 'soda-box' variation. These variations are created by altering the size, shape and baking temperature of the pretzels. For example, smaller soft-baked pretzels look like cinnamon buns when finished; while bigger ones resemble an empty soda bottle when inverted on a plate for dipping sauces into. Additionally, bakeries will also craft variations based on regional favorites such as New Jersey's cheese-steak or Pittsburgh's wild-boar sausage pizza combinations.
Because they're so delicious and common outside of Germany, many people know what pretzels are; however, few people have tried them outside of America or Europe. Regardless of where you live, you should definitely give these snacks a try since they're great any time of day!

The word 'pretzel' comes from the Latin 'pretium,' which means 'worth.' Early Germans used to make pretzels by twisting Dirham (an early form of gold) into shape. These were originally made out of natural materials like straw and seashells. Today, many businesses make pretzels using industrial machines. However, old-fashioned wooden or stone mills still exist in some German towns. To this day, these places produce some of the country's best-tasting pretzels.
Pretzels are made out of many different ingredients- salt, wheat flour and water are among the most common ones. However, spices such as cinnamon, cloves and allspice add additional flavor to these treats. After the dough is formed into rings, it is twisted and baked to form hard pretzels. Although most pretzels have an outer coating of salt, some have a coating of sugar or cinnamon for extra flavor. All these added flavors make for an altogether delicious snack!
Many Germans eat pretzels every Friday night (with beer) throughout the year. These snacks celebrate religious holidays as well as other special occasions like weddings and birthdays. Pretzels remain one of Germany's most beloved snacks thanks to their delicious taste and cultural history!
