Thoughts on Sam/Dean Jr:

Respecting SPN’s misogyny, Blurry Wife and Sam divorced, and even if she still co-parents Dean Jr, he’s closer to Sam. This is to make this all as Freudian as possible

Sam essentially talks about Dean like a wife talks about her husband who died in war. And for all of Dean Jr’s life, everything was just ‘Dean, Dean, Dean’. He would never tell Sam that about his feelings because he knows that his dad loves his uncle more than anything but that’s also the problem

I don’t think Sam would like compare Dean Jr to Dean consciously. Like I think Sam’s a good parent to Dean Jr in the typical aspects, always making him feel loved and being proud of him but he’d always feel inadequate in face of Sam’s adoration for his uncle

Even though I see the argument that Sam continued the cycle and took Dean Jr hunting, I prefer the interpretation that he doesn’t take him hunting but has kept him informed his entire life about the supernatural

What Sam also does is tell Dean Jr about what an amazing hunter Dean was and how many lives he saved, how he saved Sam countless times, and this only ever fed into Dean Jr’s insecurities about living up to his namesake

More interesting to me is for Dean Jr to want to become a hunter and Sam to be extremely against it, which Dean Jr resents because ‘oh uncle(dad) Dean was strong enough to hunt but I’m not?’

Also very delicious to me if Sam unconsciously replicates some aspects of his relationship with Dean with Dean Jr (like with Ruby but somehow more and less normal than that)

Dean Jr has an Oedipus complex to me…. But the parent he’s attracted to is Sam, like he wants to be his sonhusband so bad, and the parent he envies and resents is his unclefather who he’s never even met but is still such a big part of his life because San never shuts the fuck about him….

the thing is… i like dean and john’s relationship, like it very much is extremely compelling and insane, but it has been slightly soured for me because most of its fanon and fan-content is centred around completely erasing sam from the winchester family dynamic, and doing the typical ‘dean took the brunt of everything and sam never experienced anything as bad and only later realised how terrible dean had it and how ignorant and ungrateful he had been all along’

The ‘Dean is Sam’s dad’ take is such a terrible one for many reasons but also veryyy telling that it’s only when Dean is ‘good’ to Sam that he’s Sam’s parent but when he does something shitty to Sam, then they’re normal brothers and Sam’s his equal
