I don't know how to put this, but-

Have you ever thought that while Dick is there for all his siblings, for all the young heroes in and out of his family, Dick had to be alone?

Like, I know the comment about the eldest daughter syndrome gets made, but have you really thought about that?

Dick was there for every batkid, even though the fandom has this idea that he hated Jason, no, it never happened; Dick never hated anyone, he accepted it, he just had to be there, be the mature one in the situation, let it go and move on.

But Dick had to be alone, with a Bruce who, although he tried, was barely a person outside his life as a vigilante, and an Alfred who "did not enjoy the company of children".

Dick had to be the first to help Bruce and Alfred feel something else, he practically had to teach them how to raise a child in an emotionally healthy way (as it was possible) being the child himself.

Alfred himself admits this, and it is referenced several times that it was Dick who saved Bruce (it's reciprocal tho, but the fandom only talks about how Bruce saved Dick, not the other way around), Dick was the one who helped make them "functional people" beyond their role to cover Bruce's identity as Batman.

I know, I know, it depends a lot on which version you're reading, in many versions Bruce was actually a good father... But there's a reason why there's so much talk about his complicated relationship with Dick, because not everything was pink colored.

I just think it's sad, seeing how Dick is there for every Batkid is beautiful, wholesome, but then you go back to reading the comics where it was just Dick... And it's just so sad. He was a kid.

I'm not saying he didn't have people who loved him, I would NEVER say that... But who understood him to the level that Dick understands his younger siblings? There's no one.

Bruce is a chronic napper

He loves taking naps. Go into his study, the library, the indoor pool. Doesn’t matter, he’ll find some place to take a quick nap

As funny as the whole Dad snore headcannon is, I think Bruce is a quiet and light sleeper

You won’t even notice he’s in the room as he naps.

Over the years, the batfamily has gotten pretty good at guessing where he’s napping. If they aren’t tracking him down for a particular reason it’s mostly to nap with him

Damian loves curling up on his father’s chest (looking like a cute kitten, but he resents that so don’t say anything). He says he's just protecting Bruce's vital organs but no one believes him. They have the same sleeping face and it’s adorable.

Dick also loves curling up on Bruce’s chest. Thank the lord Bruce is still significantly bigger than him. It always reminds him of when it was just the two of them, back when he was smaller and Bruce could still protect him against the world.

Jason can no longer curl up on Bruce’s chest so he settles for nestling himself in Bruce’s side. He always tells himself that he’ll be out before Bruce wakes up, but he always falls asleep, and the next thing he knows Bruce has his arm wrapped around him and he can’t escape. Not that he wants to

Tim likes to finish up easy cases right next to Bruce. Despite their turbulent time working together as Batman and Robin, he still finds a lot of comfort in Bruce. He can breeze through the easy cases and then shut his eyes for a bit with his dad.

Cass is always there. When she gets there, no one knows. But she always brings a blanket so it’s much appreciated. She’s the one that naps with Bruce the most, other than Ace.

Alfred likes to sit and just watch Bruce breathe. It’s comforting to know that he’s still alive after years of close calls.

Here's the problem with me getting into writing fanfiction...I end up with way too many ideas to ever possibly write. I have my own mountain of original ideas that I'll never be able to write in this lifetime. And of course once I started writing fanfics, it was the same (I know I don't have many published--that's another one of my issues). So anyway, I decided to narrow it down to some of the big ones, I really hope to post someday!

I don't know if anyone will actually participate in this, but I was curious to see what happens. 😄

2024 Batfam (Dick Grayson) fic recs that got me good!

Just thought I'd share a few fics that really got me this last year (I'll try to keep them generally diverse). They're not necessarily written in 2024, but that's when they found me 🙃 --(warning: I'm Dick Grayson biased 😁) They are in no specific order other than when I read them during the year.

Tired by LittleLadybugs (104K words)

summary: Spyral had broken something in Dick. -- When he returned to Gotham, he had no choice but to grit his teeth and keep going. He was the fun one. The easy smile, the glue that held everyone together. But what happens when the rock reaches his breaking point? -- After two years of pretending, Dick starts to crack. -- Now to keep his family from finding out. OR -- Dick self-destructs. -- Featuring both the angstiest of angst and the author's attempts at humor to stop their tears from drowning the keyboard. Read at your own peril.

[Main Relationship: Dick and the batsiblings (with a good emphasis on Dick & Damian and Dick & Wally)--Bruce is not a great person in this]

My Thoughts: This is a long, dark, angsty one that really broke me, if your into that. It's very heavy, but it has some beautiful moments between Dick and Damian.

My Thoughts: This fic is not just my favorite fic I read this year. It's honestly one of my favorite fics EVER!!! I don’t know if I’ll be able to gush about this one enough! It’s soooooo freaking good!!! The plot has the batfam bound in this mysterious way that they all have to learn to understand. The depth of the concept is incredible. The stakes are built up and so painfully shown through Bruce’s eyes as he loves his kids so much. The relationships and bonds in this were breathtaking! I’m really hoping for some sequels in this coming year!

Goon of the *effing* Year by AceOfDivineChlorophyll (11.2K words)

summary: Red Hood’s men are worried. Red Hood got hit by something nasty that has him laid up for days, and everyone is starting to get nervous. Fortunately, a few off-hand comments by a not so lucid Red Hood give them all the hints they needed to get the perfect cure for their boss, a cop by the name Dick Grayson.

[Main Relationship: Dick & Jason]

My Thoughts: If you like some good old awkward cuddles and some tasty angst between estranged brothers, this is the fic for you! This one was so funny and painful with a good old identity reveal. I loved it!

Cuckoo's Song by FromDustReturned (1K words)

summary: There's a cooling gun in Jason's hand and the echo of a gunshot thundering in his ears.

[Main Relationship: Dick & Jason and Tim kind of...]

My Thoughts: This is the shortest fic on this list, but it's also one of the most well-crafted. It's so creative! Only 1000 words in total - 10 chapters with 100 words each. It tells the story backwards, and I was just so impressed with what they were able to do in such little words. It was brilliant!!!

summary: This story is about the aftermath of Nightwing #93, where Dick Grayson is assaulted by Tarantula during the Blockbuster arc. -- When running doesn't work and working doesn't work, home is the place you go where they have to take you in. Dick's home has never been Gotham; it's always been the people.

[Main Relationship: Dick and everyone]

My Thoughts: It’s always tricky recommending fics that deal with Dick’s assault from Catalina, but this one was incredible!! I think it handles the heavy subject in such an amazing way. The weight of it, the pain, the tenderness from those around Dick. It blew me away. The strength of Dick Grayson will always astound me, and this fic highlights that strength beautifully.

We're Not Dead (We Walk) by orpheusaki (4.8K words)

summary: Dick is overwhelmed for a moment, filled with clarity and inexplicable confusion as he blinks around him bleary-eyed. There's the familiar itching covering his skin, tiny grains of dark sand invading the cuts that have torn through his suit from the crash. -- He coughs, throat dry and closing with every gasp of harsh air. The desert is as unforgivable as the last time he was here, an empty expanse of dunes that might just be a trick of the heavy sun against the back of his neck. Dick pushes the panic away behind his eyelids, savoring the darkness before opening his eyes again. -- Immediately, he sees Tim. -- Unconscious, hunched over, covered in blood and sand Tim. -- (Dick and Tim get stranded in the desert, Dick is always moving forward.)

My Thoughts: A really great Dick and Tim whump fic! They’re both hurt and trying their best to take care of each other. We also get one of my favorite things in a wonderfully self-sacrificing Dick giving his all for his little brother ❤️

You Will Be the Death of Me by sunlitlemonade (3.2K words)

summary: So conclusions: either he is here at the mercy of someone who wants to play a little before they try killing him — a mistake despite Jason’s condition, not killing him when they had the chance severely diminishes their future success rate for that fun little activity when he is awake, if not completely fucks it over — or someone who is trying to help him. The second conclusion is just as befuddling as the first because not only does Jason not remember what had left him needing help, he doesn’t know who would help. -- He is not without allies but said allies come with a price. -- “I can’t tell if you’re having a nightmare or throwing a tantrum with your eyes closed.” -- He knew that voice. A source of annoyance but reliable. Trustworthy, his brain supplied. -- Warm, came another, frankly unnecessary, addition. -- Nobody and nothing had been warm for Jason Todd and he would like to stop being lied to right this fucking instant.

My Thoughts: Dick takes care of an injured Jason, and it scares Jason to be loved. Great loving, angsty fic between these two brothers.

Equal Magnitude, Opposite Direction by vmkhoney (7.5K words)

summary: “This is why you’re my favorite.” Dick says. -- “We both know that’s not true.” Clark says. -- “What? Are you my favorite for a different reason?” But there’s something strange in his voice, and Bruce recognizes it as the tone he uses when he’s trying to slide past something without addressing it. -- “Dick.” Clark says, mildly reproachful. -- “…yeah. I know.” Dick says, quiet. “But he wouldn’t believe me if I said so.” -- OR -- Three times Bruce thought he wasn’t his sons favorite hero, and one time he knew he wasn’t.

My Thoughts: Sweet fic where Bruce realizes he's most of his kids favorite and understands why he's not for the one that he isn't. It's a little sweet one.

My Thoughts: Super adorable and sweet! Enjoy the fluffiness!!! In general, I’ve been reading a lot of this author lately (Eventually, I'll make my favorite authors list for here and gush about their amazingness). A few of my personal faves by this author are ‘Open Line’ --Dick&Bruce fluff with a droplet of angst, ‘Breathing’ --Bruce&Jason angst with some fluff woven in (from Dick's pov), and ‘Child of the Manor’ --Dick's pov with Bruce taking care of his babies --just as a little bonus 😄

To me, one of the things that’s really interesting about Dick Grayson, and this will be something, a theme that’s mined in Batman too, is that relationship is pathological at times and completely endearing at others. Dick always wears his heart on his sleeve, he cares about Bruce openly. He’s compassionate and empathetic. Bruce is just a darker character, and for me, he’s someone who needs that connection but won’t admit it. That’s why he as all the Robins and so on. He needs people and he’s not fully…crazy, the way you’d imagine he’d become as an old and wind up in the cave all the time. The idea is that Dick Grayson is also the person who is his greatest tether to humanity. When I think about the future for Bruce, I think about him either very very lonely, sort of like the Batman Beyond version of him or dying in the line of duty as Batman or…you know, there aren’t a lot of good endings. Dick’s the person that would pull him back from the edge, or even bring him down, honestly if he needed to if Bruce really went too far in some way and bring him in. That story is in the back of my head as something that might never ever happen. But if you take the characters, I love Elseworlds and futuristic versions of them. From the Dark Knight Returns to Batman Beyond to everything, even things like Red Son and all sorts of stories that imagine what would happen if you took this character through a logical extension like Kingdom Come. My opinion is Dick would be the person to bring Bruce down. I don’t mean kill him, he’d bring him back from the edge and have him locked up if he went too far in some way. He’s the final battle for Bruce in that way and not Clark. I know some people think it would be Clark, Dick would be the second to last if he were doing the levels in a video game. It would be Dick Grayson and then finally Superman but to me it would be the reverse. The final guy would be Dick Grayson. I think he knows Bruce better in some ways.”

Dick is everyone's safe place.

Was anyone suffering from insomnia? It just so happens that when they're with Dick, they finally manage to fall asleep.

Was anyone overstimulated? With Dick most of the sensations disappear, just feel warmth.

Insecurity? Danger? Dick is just safe.

That's why Batman feels better when Nightwing comes to the same conclusion as him.

That's why Jason can let his guard down when Dick's around, can relax the constant tension in his shoulders. Sometimes it's even unconscious, but even when they argue he's not really tense.

That's why Tim can fully immerse himself in his work when Dick is around, he doesn't need to be aware of his surroundings.

That's why Damian can feel when Dick is around. That's why he shows his emotions, from anger to joy.

Cass allows herself to make more noise around him, make her presence known.

Even Steph, Babs, and Duke himself allow themselves to trust him, like, for real.

His friends are no different.

Wally has never been ashamed of being who he is around Dick. Whether he wants to talk a lot or a little, eat as much as he wants, be as vulnerable as he wants, be a hero or just Wally. He knows that Dick will never judge him.

Roy knows Dick can be a jerk, but he's a loyal jerk, someone who's never going to betray you. It's just safe to trust him. Admire him.

Do I really even need to talk about Donna, of all people, putting so much trust in Dick, a man? Her Wonder Twin.

He's the universal constant for Superman, the one to whom he personally gave his blessing to use a name from a legend of his world, a part of himself.

Dick is just everyone's safe place.

Dick Grayson is giving me some George Bailey vibes. They both don't know how many lives they've touched and made better by their presence.

I don't think I have the skill for this, but I'd love to read 'It's A Wonderful Life' Batfam au where Dick gets real low and thinks everything would be better if he’d never been born. Then he gets to see what that would be like and just how devastating the world would truly be.
