Assignment Name: Character Design
Tools Used: Photoshop, VEIKK Drawing Tablet
Desc: Key art of the Dark Bard looking down upon his city, holding it in his hands like a trophy and plaything.
Feedback: Based on feedback I received on the blockout sketches, I decided to expand on the first one. While it was an excellent point that the character being angled and coming in from the side better communicates the game's identity as an isometric tactics game, I ended up being convinced by the palace's position in relation to the character's face, with its tip pointing up at his chin. I also liked using the calm but arrogant expression, as relative to the other sketch, this one better communicates his sense of comfort and security in his leadership. Something I borrowed from the other sketch, though, was the position of his hands- the original looked more like he was "on his way", and looked more foreboding, but at the time the player arrives in the prison city, he has already taken control. So "foreboding" was not accurate. I used darker shades in the background on the left alongside his corrupted eye, and lighter shades on the right for the regular one. I think this could've used a bit more detail, and I struggled knowing how far to go with the lighting, as I wasn't sure how far in the background the character should be relative to the highlighted city.

Desc:
Top-Left: The Dark Bard has repurposed an interrogation/torture chair, turning it into a throne, sitting with his arm through one of the restraints in an expression of arrogance.
Middle: The Dark Bard stands ready for combat, the wind pushing his cloak and hat, with the Prismatic Snake in its staff form.
Top-Right: The Dark Bard having just played the Prismatic Snake in its flute form, stamping his cloak with surveilling eyes.
Feedback: I leaned a bit too much into the character's arrogant attitude, and I think I could've represented more expressions. While he's meant to be an exaggeratedly evil version of himself due to the influence of the flute/staff, I think the character could use more identifying elements that aren't directly related to his role as a dictator type of leader. This character wouldn't serve too major a role in their game, as they'd be one of 4 or 5 "nations" the player can visit and respond to in different ways (liberation, destruction, diplomacy, etc.). While his nation is meant to stand out as more extremist, I don't feel the character would receive the same development as a central villain. As such, I designed the character leaning on tropes.

Desc:
1. A citizen of the prison city very close to the inner prison, with a person being harassed for being out past curfew.
2. A citizen trying to sneak through the inner prison, being spotted easily by the Panoptic Palace.
Feedback: Thanks to some very helpful feedback, I was able to fix the scale and perspective of the Panoptic Palace with a better understanding of how to represent its scale and the location's closeness to the inner ring of the city, where the palace floats above. I wanted to focus on the lack of privacy, as the person in the first image is merely sitting down outside their residence, even though that alone can be an act of defiance. I wanted the environment to look dull, dreary, and like a prison, hence the crenellations on every wall, gates that block access to each section of the city, and prison towers at the corners of where each wall connects. Overall, I think I was able to get most of the theming across, but I think the buildings and ground could've used a bit more detail.

Assignment Name: Character Design

Description:
From the most peaceful kingdom on the continent
Wanted to share their music with the world, became a traveling bard. Visited a kingdom they shouldn't have, sent out to a dedicated prison on the continent because they want prisoners for labor
Feels punished for their naivete, punished for being pacifistic, grows bitter while imprisoned and mistreated by other prisoners for their less criminal background
They are building their own kingdom, with a floating palace mutated from main prison building by their magic flute, dark desires amplified by the influence of the flute
They stand out separately, they are mutated and overly colorful from the cursed snake flute
Feedback:
My vision for this character only felt half clear- I had a sense of their outfit, the flute, and that they'd wear a very costume-y hat, but I really struggled to design the hat. Based on feedback I received to make it more exaggerated, I tried to accentuate the edges and make the plumage much larger, but I had a hard time figuring it out without making it the focal point of the character. I instead wanted his flute/staff and his face to be the focus, while the costumed elements remain secondary. I also believe I fell into that trap of amateur character design where the character feels like a photobashed mix of things the character "would have". I was heavily influenced by the references.

These were the primary references, but I feel that most of my art is very subconsciously influenced by Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest.

Both sketches are meant to convey the same thing- that The Dark Bard has full surveillance and control over his prison-turned-city. The city has simple geometry and is in an isometric perspective to give a bit of insight into the gameplay, as this game would be a tactics game with an isometric perspective. The different positions of the character are meant to feel like:
The character is a looming threat that always has his eyes on the city. The position of the character feels a bit more generic, but more imposing than the second one.
The character treats the city like it's his snow globe, or diorama, and actively manipulates it to follow his regime.
There's a slight difference of imminent threat vs active threat.

Desc: A dark and dreary corner of the prison city, where only the Warden and his palace may display color.
Feedback: The main goal of the color here was to highlight the contrast of the Warden's harsh limitations on freedom of expression, while he "hoards" all the color for himself. Despite wanting everything but the palace and dyestalks to be grey and dull, I think I could've used more shades to make up for the lost detail. I like the sharp contrast, but again, it feels that the environment itself outside of the palace and foreground lack detail.

Assignment Name: Making Many From Few
Godot Project Link: https://rikkaiser.itch.io/build-a-bird
Desc: A bird generator that lets you change the beak, hair, talons and tail of a bird and then color it.
Feedback: Yeah, I don't know why I decided to make an application that mixes the parts up. I feel that I spread myself too thin here and that my illustrations weren't necessarily detailed enough to account for the time I knew I would need to spend on programming. Birds felt like a good choice because I really like fictional birds for some reason, and I figured by giving many options to color birds with some unconventional features would make them feel simultaneously fictional and real. I struggled to know how to effectively color the pieces knowing that I would be coloring them programmatically, and allowing different coloring of each part can create some unsatisfying contrast between them. I think birds were also a bit big in scope to choose as a subject, as pretty much anything about it could be swapped out and feel like it fits. I think it's cool that I was able to make the bird generating application, but I think next time I would focus more on the illustration aspect and pick a subject with fewer variables.

Assignment Name: Patterns from Particles
Tools Used: Godot, VEIKK Drawing Tablet, Adobe Photoshop
Feedback: It felt great getting to write code to bring these simple sprites to life! I spent time fussing with Godot's particle system only to end up creating prefabs for each sprite and writing code to drive specific animations for each, and I felt that I had much more control this way. It was difficult to know how complex the sprites should be- I had worried that adding the small "spikes" behind the larger ones on the arc-looking sprite would overcomplicate the design. Then, with the "woosh" sprite, I didn't know how to add detail that wouldn't take away from the simple and brief purpose it served in the animation. I also worried that my animation wouldn't effectively communicate that it's a car horn and more so a generally unpleasant sound, such as a traditional alarm clock. I had hoped the red color in the "lightning bolt" sprite would help show the aggression in the act, but I'm not sure if that gets across.

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools Used: VEIKK Drawing Tablet, Aseprite
Feedback: I used to practice my pixel art by looking at traditional artwork of Dragon Quest monsters and "pixelizing" them, so luckily this is something I've done before! The most difficult parts were making use of the 16x16 space for that drawing, and figuring out how to best use color on the 32x32 drawing with no restrictions. I tried to use a bit of dithering on the 16x16 one to show detail, but ultimately felt confused with how to best represent my creature in that space- surprisingly more so than the 8x8 drawing. For the final 32x32 drawing, I became obsessive about many seemingly innocuous pixels, trying to find where to place pixels for anti-aliasing without going overboard. I also felt a bit overwhelmed without any color limitations, so I stayed within my own constraints of a similar palette to the first 32x32 drawing, using a bigger variety of shades for shading, anti-aliasing, and general detail. For each, drawing the outward claw was extremely difficult. I found myself struggling to detail the claw such that the angling of each finger could be represented without it becoming a blocky mess. Ultimately, I am happy with where I landed on my final 32x32 drawing, but would like to practice anti-aliasing and dithering techniques more, as I'm not super confident with how I used them across each of my drawings.

Assignment Name: Industry from Biology
Tools Used: VEIKK Drawing Tablet, Adobe Photoshop
Feedback: The hardest part for this drawing was conceptualizing it. I had a loose idea in my head of what it would look like, but figuring out how to "engineer" this made-up weapon was very difficult. I knew I wanted the horns to be featured at the tip of the blaster, but kept debating on how to represent that while keeping true to my idea that they could move freely to act as a loose grasper or a propeller-type weapon in close quarters. It was also difficult to imagine what details would complement the design and make it look contextually believable, as there isn't a real-world basis for understanding how it might work. I feel that I could have borrowed more from the atlas beetle's appearance, but struggled to find meaningful inspiration for my design outside of the shell and horns.

Assignment Name: Fantastic Vista
Tools: VEIKK Drawing Tablet, Adobe Photoshop
Desc: A colored monolith under a sky of souls, inspired by "Hundertwasserhaus" in Austria.
Feedback: I really struggled with this one- the photograph I took was at a very strange angle because I thought the perspective was cool, but it ended up being a challenge for me to map out the vanishing points and horizon line. It was extremely difficult to outline and follow the left side of the building, and I feel like I lost my place quite a lot. Working with such a bizarre reference also made it hard to conceptualize a style for the monolith. I drew the outline for the building and colored each panel by hand with an intentional "sloppy" look, but it was hard to color it coherently and also sloppily. This was very time-consuming and there was likely a better way to approach it. I also focused much more on creating an abstract composition than taking motifs from Hundertwasserhaus, so I feel like my work's connection to it as the primary reference is weak; I just wanted something nonsensical and weird, and that's all I took. I feel that I missed a lot of beats for the assignment, and will try to focus much more intently on their specifications moving forward.

A sketch of a photograph I took of a Christmas rose.
This flower is believed by some to be holy based on a legend of an angel touching the ground, causing it to miraculously bloom.
On the last day of winter, extremely sweet berries start to grow underneath its petals, rapidly developing to full size on the first day of spring. If not harvested and eaten before the second day of spring, they mysteriously rot and disappear.
