I swear OsoSan has so much detail that you just notice it after multiple rewatches…sometimes it takes up to years until my little brain is like “wait, hold up…”
Like in episode 24 in season 2 when Osomatsu felt conflicted that the sextuplets don’t see each other much or basically not at all that no one knows what the other is doing rn he went on a walk to think and I noticed he walked by four familiar places
Like the scenes in the “first” episode of OsoSan where we got the characters first introduced and the same problem was there…Osomatsu has no idea what his other brothers are up to and he misses them (but there it felt different a.k.a he was bored)
The first place he went to was where we met Jyushimatsu as he went on high speed swimming
The second is with Ichimatsu in the small alleyway
Then Karamatsu (and his delulu land moment)
And lastly and that’s just something I found out right now as I was searching for screenshots…the first place Chibita had his Oden stand standing and Osomatsu vented to him (gosh Oso’s talk was so real. As someone with siblings too I could relate)
It’s a really sweet and sad little touch to this moment and shows he misses hanging out with his bros a lot.
(Now idk if he walked by places that had Choro or Totty but I couldn’t find anything)

man… i think it’s so important that karamatsu is the center of the osomatsu san movie. I honestly don’t think it could’ve been anyone else but him. Bc only karamatsu would hold onto a fight that happened over 10 years ago. Like yes, his regret is about the letter, but it’s more so about his failure to bring his brothers together and have an actual conversation. It’s about his helplessness and inability to communicate his frustration properly. And while it’s ALL their regrets that brought them to that world. Karamatsu has the best recollection of that time because he’s been ruminating over it for years.
...which, of course, is something he told no one about. if anything, he initially tried to get them to think positively about their high school days.
but after they drink some more, he's the first one to start talking about their past seriously
also, if you go back and watch this scene, he's the only one whose face we don't see while jyushi is teasing them with their old pics. everyone else starts laughing at his antics, except karamatsu. in fact, he actually has this reeeeaaaaalllly subtle moment where he hunches forward slightly. like he visibly tenses up a bit (i wish i knew how to make gifs man).
with karamatsu the writers like to take a very “show don’t tell” approach. Yes there are episodes where he narrates (overseas vacation) and that could be considered his inner monologue, but for the most part we kiiinda don’t really know what he’s thinking. especially when he's being insulted. like he straight up either doesn't respond or he just goes "mmmm~~?"
(and as we know, he gets insulted a lot)
the thing is, this is by design. Because not only do we have a direct quote from his voice actor (yuichi nakamura) about it.
we also literally have an entire skit criticizing him for it.
but i think that this tendency to hold things in directly stems from that fight on the roof. The one time he really tried to step out of his comfort zone and approach his brothers about something earnestly, he started the worst fight they’ve ever had.
(also side note, he actually only starts opening up about it after he takes a couple sips from the beer osomatsu got for them)
Now I’m not going to argue with the director over whether karamatsu is a 100% bonafide kind good hearted person or not (though i should note that this was from 2016 and his characterization has changed a lot since then). but i think it's important to note that the rest of them lowkey forgot about that fight while karamatsu consciously held it in because he didn't want to remind them of it and potentially start another fight.
when they discuss their regrets, the rest of the bros are more-so regretful over how they acted as teens. they discuss how their teenage "weirdness" stemmed from their dislike of being sextuplets. this dislike further manifested as a dislike for each other. but karamatsu's regret was over his failure to bring them together. i do appreciate that this strong piece of characterization was based around the love he has for his brothers.
this is getting wayyy too long, but i have more to say (especially about how passive karamatsu is... so many thoughts) so i might make a part 2. stay tuned (maybe lol)

Karamatsu and identity
[Spoilers for Osomatsu-san: The Movie]
I've been thinking about Karamatsu and how he never relaxes, always putting on airs...
I feel like when the brothers all split up in high school, they all reacted in different ways to losing their identities as a group. With Karamatsu, his, hmmm, self-discovery journey, doesn't really take off properly though, while most of the others' did (quality of the results of those discoveries not being guaranteed). Sure, he's a bit of a crybaby, it's been noted by other fans before that he's been one in Osomatsu-kun as well
And he did dabble in acting of course, something I will touch on later...
But most of the time, he was just left to be this sad, lonely, anxiety-ridden boy who struggles to even talk with other people.
Barely having an identity beyond that. Almost stagnant, unable to move forward.
He was perfectly fine fooling around with his brothers when they still got long!
But on his own, he never had the courage to do any of that.
He never wanted to accept that they all drifted apart, and in doing so, he never really went out and tried to reinvent and discover himself as passionately as the others did.
The joke is that "Kara" means "Empty" because he's empty-headed, but it could also mean that he's empty on the inside, because he never found himself after they all split apart. He doesn't know who he is anymore, so after the big fight, the one that he was certain was why he had "regrets"
He finally realised that he was on his own.
And that's when he started to try and find himself. Or rather, started to act. Telling himself he's great, confident and fashionable, because hey... Acting makes you feel like you're somebody else. It gives you confidence you normally don't have, and you can take a break from being somebody you don't really want to be, or maybe... Somebody you don't know who they are anymore.
Karamatsu is always acting, or he's serious, there's rarely an in-between. He never relaxes, truly. He never shuts off. Either he's a fool, or he's a big brother, taking on the responsibility and act of one, in order to solve a tense situation. If you tell him to be himself, he'd probably tell you he is. And maybe he truly believes that he is, too. But I think that he lost a big part of himself in high school, and if you strip away his role as a big brother, and the exaggerated acting and airs he puts on, he's not quite sure that there's somebody in there anymore. Maybe he's truly "empty".
