              the coin would be flipped into the air as she finishes speaking , caught just as the others had been - 

                 ❝ aww - ! while it would have felt amazing to have it tie at 2 - 2 … ❞ hands raise to imitate cat paws - a pair of cat ears already having been placed on her head . ( was she holding onto those the whole time expecting to lose … ? )

...Yeah, that’s about what Mary was expecting. Yumeko had seemed a bit too eager to participate in this gamble, and so the fact that she apparently had everything prepared in case she lost didn’t surprise the blonde in the slightest. But, hey. She had won, and now she didn’t have to humiliate herself by doing... Whatever Yumeko was doing right now.

“Cool, I won. Now, as my house pet, my first order to you is leave me alone.” She said simply, turning around and waving her hand in Yumeko’s direction dismissively. She didn’t want to be seen being followed around by someone wearing cat ears and meowing at her, after all.

               ❝ why , yes ! in fact , i’d love it even more if we could get to 2 - 2 … ! besides … the fact that this THRILL is ours alone … it’s almost romantic , don’t you think ? ❞ if it was anyone else asking the question , they most likely wouldn’t have expected a serious answer , let alone for that answer to be that of affirmation . however , yumeko wasn’t just anyone else . a compulsive gambling freak . 

           ❝ well , one of us is about to take the lead - so there’s no point in putting this next flip off ! ❞ readies the coin again as she speaks before flipping it into the air , catching it the same way as the last two times .

           ❝ TAILS again ~ ! wow ! how absolutely thrilling … i’m in a real bind here , aren’t i ? you could be just one flip away from victory , or two bad flips away from utter despair ! isn’t that just so exciting ? ❞

Despite the fact that nothing was set in stone yet, the fact that she had the lead caused Mary to become a bit cockier than she already was. “Well, looks like I won’t be acting like a house pet today.” Though she sounded cocky, really she was more relieved than anything. Being a house pet was utterly embarrassing, and she sure as hell didn’t want to go through that again.

Besides, she knew that Yumeko, freak that she was, actually enjoyed acting like a cat, so maybe this would turn out to be a win-win for everyone involved. “It all comes down to this, then. If it lands in my favor, I win. If it doesn’t, there’s still another round left that decides it all. Pretty suspenseful, wouldn’t you agree?”

Obviously, Mary was not very interested in what Yumemi had to say, and the look on her face made that clear from the start. But, she knew the idol was very adamant about getting people’s attention when she wanted it, so she turned to face her, willing to at least listen to what she had to say in the hopes it would make her go away afterwards.

At the mention of ‘showing her loyalty’ and ‘wanting to be part of the duo’, Mary scoffed. “I’d rather die than be a part of anything to do with you. I know it’s hard to believe, but not everyone is a fan of you.” She waved her hand in Yumemi’s direction dismissively, wanting her to just go away already. “The only reason I was at that show in the first place was to watch you and Yumeko go at it. Nothing more, nothing less.”

“ mary! mary!☆ ” down the hall she jogged towards the familiar blonde. her styled tails bounced as she did. a hand waving above her head to make sure the second year paid attention to her & her alone.

“ i’m having a concert soon☆ ” she stopped in front of her, leaning in close. similar to yumeko, personal space is not a thing the idol is concerned with around mary. “ but there is something that yumemi noticed when looking at the ticket sales☆ ” 

she hummed, standing up straight, fingers poking at her cheeks. “ mary didn’t buy a ticket☆ there must be a mistake, right? mary is a fan of yumemi! she must be, right?☆ she was at the show with yumeko☆ ahh! maybe mary wanted to be a part of the duo instead! if mary shows her loyalty to me, then maybe i could change the plans around~☆ hehe~☆ ” she cheerfully let out a laugh.             ❝ it’s time for round two ~ ! all right ! ❞ yumeko would raise the coin to her lips momentarily , pressing her own softly against it . ❝ good luck out there , little coin ! ❞ with that , once again she would flip the coin into the air , catching it with closed hands so as not to peek at the outcome .

            ❝ oh , wow , you did it ! tails ! so that makes the score one - to - one ! ooh , how exciting ~ ❞

“Looks like the luck is on MY side this time, Yumeko.” Mary said with a teasing grin as the coin landed in her favor. Of course, she knew there were still plenty of rounds to go, especially now that neither of them could make a clean sweep and win 3-0, but her ego made it so she couldn’t resist a bit of gloating at this moment. Especially considering what was at stake.

She made no reference to Yumeko talking to the coin like that would help at all, just chalking it up to Yumeko being her usual weird self. “Well, now that the score’s even, things are already getting tense, aren’t they?”

             ❝ of COURSE we’ll keep it simple ~ ! ❞ yumeko clasps her hands together excitedly one last time before moving one to reach into the pocket of her blazer , pulling out a small coin . ❝ i would never change things up on you in the middle of a bet , mary ! the simple nature in which our lives can be gambled away is what really makes it fun ! ❞

             with a giggle , yumeko would toss the coin into the air after flicking it up with her cherry - red manicured thumb . clasping it together with her hands as it falls so they can’t immediately see the results , turning back to mary with a twinkle in her gaze .

            ❝ o - kay ! time to see the winner of round one ! ❞ moving her hand to see who had won , a cutesy - innocent smile painted yumeko’s lips as her free hand moved to her lips . ❝ wow ~ ! luck must really be on my side , it’s heads , it’s heads ! ❞

Mary grimaced as the first round went to Yumeko, but she wasn’t too worried just yet. There were still plenty of rounds to go, after all. “Don’t act like you’ve won already. It’s still best three out of five.”

Even after saying that, Mary was still a little bit upset that the very first coin flip was in Yumeko’s favor. That wasn’t exactly a good omen of things to come. But she tried to stay a least a little confident going into the next round. Gambling, no matter what kind of game it was, was all about confidence.

             she had to think for a few moments before ultimately deciding on something . if they weren’t betting ACTUAL money , it had to be a game that could be played without the need for betting any kind of currency . but what would have that and also come with the high - stakes heart - throbbing excitement that was true gambling ? 

            after a moment , an idea came to mind , a deranged twinkle lighting yumeko’s eyes as she met mary’s gaze with a passionate smile . from anyone else it might simply be seen as cute , but from yumeko it was truly something to be feared .

            ❝ how about we flip a coin ? but i don’t want the FUN to be over that soon , so we’ll do best three out of five . we don’t really need anyone to SPECTATE since this is just between us and doesn’t involve any money - and i’m sure it won’t be hard to trust that i won’t cheat , right , mary ~ ? ❞

“Your best idea for a bet like this is a coin flip...?” Honestly, she couldn’t say she was REALLY surprised. This did seem like something Yumeko would come up with. And she had already agreed to this bet, so there was no backing out now...

“Fine, whatever. If that’s your idea, then let’s do it. Let’s just make things simple. Choose one side, and stick with it. So I choose tails.” She felt like she had earned the right to choose her side first, since she was the one being dragged into this. Crossing her arms, Mary waited for Yumeko to get this over with.

Hopefully she would actually win this bet, and she could command Yumeko to just leave her alone for the rest of the day or something.

              she backs off just a bit , if only enough so she’s able to use her hands to gesture while she goes to explain the bet to mary . ❝ neither of us are housepets anymore , so i thought this might be fun ~ you know , i sort of miss acting like a cat , nyan ! ❞ she winks as she speaks , a hand raising mimicking a cat’s paw . if she had a tail it most certainly would be moving along with this performance . people were staring .

            ❝ i don’t really CARE what the game is , but whoever loses will be the other’s house pet for a day ! it’s not MUCH so even if you lose it won’t be too bad , i promise ~ ! besides , i won’t be too mean to you , i love you , mary ! ❞

As soon as Yumeko came close, she could feel that the girl was about to hug her. She could see it in those red eyes. So she pushed the girl away before she could get the chance. “No hugs, remember?” She said before listening to Yumeko’s terms.

And immediately, she responded with a blush forming on her face. Not just at Yumeko’s “performance”, but at the terms she was expected to agree to. “A-Are you kidding me?! Why would I want to risk anything that would make me be a house pet again? That was the most miserable experience of my life!”

However, she knew that Yumeko probably wouldn’t take no for an answer. Besides, she knew how the girl worked now, so she would have a better chance to actually win. And having someone like Yumeko serve her every whim, even for just a day, would probably do a lot for her reputation at the school.

Besides, it’s not like she’d ever admit it to the girl’s face, but... gambling with Yumeko was always fun, or at the very least, an experience she’d never forget.

So, after a few moments of hesitation, she speaks once more. “...Tch, fine. Whatever. I accept. What are we gonna play?”

...And there was Yumeko, over-enthusiastic as always. She practically got off on gambling, and while Mary was no stranger to enjoying the thrills of the game, Yumeko took it to a level she was never prepared to match. Staring at the girl with her usual unamused expression, Mary at least gave Yumeko the privilege of hearing her out.

“Before I agree to anything you want to do, I want to know what you plan on having us bet. Knowing you, it could easily be something like, I dunno...” She paused before putting on her best Yumeko impression.

“Mary, let’s gamble! The loser has to cut off one of their fingers! Isn’t it so much fun?! Betting something so important over a game?! Doesn’t it just give you such a RUSH?!” 

“...Or something like that. So tell me what you wanna bet, and maybe I’ll say yes.”

JUST the person i was looking for , ehehe ! ❞ she chirps out cheerfully as soon as crimson eyes meet the other , yumeko bounding to mary’s side in an instant . obvious blush dusting her cheeks , a sparkle in her eyes as she continued . ❝ i’ve been THINKING … you made my first day at this school way back when incredibly exciting ! ever since then , i’ve really wanted to gamble with you again ! so … ❞ 

                ❝ won’t you please ? i’ve already thought of equal terms to bet on that don’t involve MONEY so you won’t need to worry about that ~ ! ❞

“  Stop  over  exaggerating  it.  ”  Answered  Yukako,  plum  lips  pursed  and  drawn  to  be  a  closed  -  mouth  snarl.  Were  she  ever  told  that  the  blonde’s  words  were  of  nothing  but  light  nature,  a  joke,  it  could’ve  satiated  the  ANNOYED  /  STEEL  expression  painted  over  Yukako’s  visage,  but  even  then,  she  might’ve  not  even  believed  it.  Arms  taut  over  her  chest  /  nose  in  the  air,  reasonably  distrustful.  In  what  universe  would  any  person  want  to  play  poker  with  someone  who  just  insulted  them?  “  I’ve  never  gambled  before.  I’m  not  interested.  ”

“Tch. Killjoy.” Mary said with a displeased glare in the other girl’s direction. “What’s the matter, afraid you’ll lose? I am a pretty damn good gambler, so I suppose I can’t blame you there.” Despite being handed quite a few losses in games recently, Mary’s ego over her gambling skills was still as big as ever.

She put the deck of cards away, and stood up to face the girl properly. “You seem like a stuck-up priss anyway, so I doubt you’d even ante up anything good.” She added with a small huff.
