Malediction Update

Okay so, a bit has changed with this WIP.

The biggest change I think, is that it is no longer going to be a short story – it is going to be somewhere between a novelette and novella. I just had too many ideas for this story and where it could go. I am expecting the final word count to be 10,000 or more. The story is now going to cover many more years than the original short story was going to. The ending of the short story version is now going to be the middle section of the novelette. I think this decision was a good one since now it will show a lot more of Olive’s emotional arc.

I also scrapped the very first draft I had of this story. It just wasn’t working in the form and structure I had originally chosen. It is not only no longer a short story; it’s going to be in first person retrospective instead of its original third person limited. I struggle to write first person usually, but in the original draft that was using third person I ended up struggling with writing this story in third. Once I scrapped it and instead started writing first person, it started to flow a lot better and Olive’s voice was really starting to shine through.

A small change that has happened but should be noted because it was in my original WIP Intro. There will no longer be a dog that dies. In the original version of the story, I didn’t actually have to write that scene so I was okay with it just being mentioned, in this new current version I wouldhave to write the scene and it’s just not something I am built for.

As for characters, most things are the same. Olive is now into gardening which I just think suits her SO well. As I am writing I am learning so much about the mother’s character. Damn is she a selfish woman but her love for Olive is unfounded. If I would ever to share this story, one of the things I’d find most interesting is the audience reaction to the mother and what they think of her.

Final thing! The story is currently at a small 1111 words. I have decided that I would like to use this story for camp nano! My camp nano goal however is only 10,000 words so I won’t be working on this for the next week’ish until camp nano starts just so I don’t finish it before I could complete the word goal. I don’t know exactly how long it will turn out to be, but if my estimate is right, I would definitely be running out of story before completing camp nano. In the meantime, I think I will just be working on random things, continuing a novel outline I have been working on for a different story, and also writing down any and all ideas that come to me for Malediction.

Okay, I am pretty sure that is it for now. I’m sorry this update is massive – probably should have updated as I went!

I think the coolest thing about being a writer is that as long as you write, you /are/ a writer. It doesn't matter if you're not great at it, it doesn't matter if you've put a project down for now or you're taking a small break from writing altogether, if you're not published or don't have any plans of being published.

You write things? You're a writer.

I just think that's pretty rad.

Please don't worry if you write slow in comparison to others. 100 words a day? 50 words a week? 5 words an hour? Those are all words that weren't there before and that's so great.

Feeling so inspired to write today?? Anyone else have those days where they're just super motivated and inspired?

These days are rareish for me. A lot of times I have to force myself a little to get into my story. (I do know my limits though and when not to force myself like on a really bad mental health day.) I rarely have that natural motivation and inspiration, I usually have to make it. But yeah, today is just one of those days where I'm getting heaps of ideas for my story and possibly future wips too! And I'm just so excited to write!! Love these days.

On a different note, I'm hoping to share some of my writing soon. I'm really really anxious about it since I've seen some fantastic writing on here. I only have my current WIP to share since anything else I've written is from years ago because of my huge writing hiatus. And of course all of my WIP is in its first draft phase. I also don't write as quick as others, which I'm not bummed out about or anything but it just means I don't have as much to share. I want to work on writing a bit quicker tbh but I'm okay with what I can produce for now. But yeah idk sharing writing scares me. Have any of you received mean comments about your writing on here? The idea of that terrifies me.

Anyway! Here's to feeling motivated and inspired to write! (And even sharing that writing! Never underestimate how hecking strong and awesome you are for sharing your writing with others!!) Okay rambling over ! Hope you are all having an amazing day! I have so much love and admiration for all of you.

Malediction - WIP Intro

Title: Malediction

Form: short story

POV & Tense: past tense, third person limited

Genre: contemporary, literary fiction

Themes & Subject Matter: truth, trust, reality, mental illness, unhealthy mother-daughter relationship, disillusionment

Setting: a mix of Victorian-style and cottage-style house is in a very isolated area of the bush*. the house belongs to mc’s mother. the house is small and showing light weathering.

Status: writing the first draft

Summary: Mother believed the family was cursed. ‘The curse–’ Mother had told Olive, ‘–will affect all things in life.’ It is why Olive’s dog succumbed to the snake-bite, why her and Mother’s pockets seemed to get caught on the cupboard doorknobs more often than other people’s, why Olive must always stay there, in their home.

‘Our family wasn’t always like this.’ Mother would say, her eyes staring through Olive, seeing into the past. ‘No, this family used to have good luck.’

Characters-

Olive: Olive is our main character. She’s a petite red-haired girl with freckles spotting her cheeks and nose. The story takes place from her perspective (in third person) and starts on the day before her 16th birthday. She is a sweet young girl but very naïve. She loves to draw with the cheap pencil set her mother bought from the local Post Office. She also loves to learn. She wants to make her mother happy, no matter what it means for herself. Her mother is her whole world and all she has. Olive has been home-schooled by her mother since six years-old, her dad left when she was young, Olive knows no-one else. With no evidence or contradictions from the outside world, Olive has been left no choice but to believe in the curse that plagues their family.

The Mother: The mother plays the role of a subtle antagonist in this story. If you were to ask my characters what the antagonist in their lives were, they would say the curse. The mother is a bit of a scattered character. Her moods, ideas and opinions shift frequently. The only things that stay the same are her love for Olive, her fear of the curse, and her willingness to protect Olive from it. The mother can often be found in her wrinkled purple t-shirt that she owned before Olive was born, her red hair scraggly and dry. It is heavily implied throughout the story that the mother is suffering from some type of mental illness.

My Thoughts:

So, my friends, this is my very basic introduction to my current WIP Malediction. Some things may be changed as I continue writing since I’m trying my hand at discovery writing for the first time. Also, it is still a little baby being in its unfinished first draft phase. Because of its first draft/discovery status, the characters (and the story really) aren’t as fleshed out as I’m hoping they will be in later drafts. Anyway, if you read this my appreciation for you is indescribable.

*the bush is Australian slang for a wooded area, kind of like a forest? but more Australian. Hahaha why is the bush so hard to explain, here’s a link to explain it better.

My newest addition to my collection; Superman Action Comic Cover #01!!! I have been waiting for this to come out since I first pre-ordered it back on the 2nd of February this year, and it has FINALLY ARRIVED!! I am VERY happy to have this hanging on my wall along side my Dr. Strange Funko comic book. I think it looks great. Let me know what you guys think 🙂🙂🙂
