(I can’t remember if I shared this already)
A good friend of mine, Eric Dowdle, passed away recently from brain cancer. His mother died from the same cancer several years ago, and when I first met him, he’d just had his last radiation treatment for his first fight with this disease. It came back again, requiring surgery, and leaving him partially handicapped. It went into remission again, but when it came back a third time, treatment didn’t seem to be doing anything, so he opted to go into hospice care. He passed peacefully at home with his fiance’, dog, and family all around him.
He cosplayed so many characters. I knew him best for Kakashi, though he also did Roy Mustang, Trevor Belmont, Kenshin Himura, a Jedi (his own creation, no specific one), and Cid Highwind. We’d planned to do a FMA shoot together, as he had a Roy Mustang ready to go and I had a “Madame Christmas” Chris Mustang ready to go. He had gained some weight from the chemo and couldn’t fit into it, and I offered to let it out for him but he said he wanted to lose the weight anyway. He never got better, and I could only find one good photo of him in the cosplay. I used Photoshop to do the set we’d planned on creating, snark and all. I always called him Sensei. He taught me a lot about bravery and strength. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
