Martyr chapter 13: In Pursuit of Family

Still stuck in Issylra and missing half the party, Ashton and the others are given the lead they need to track down their distant friends. When Ashton stumbles upon information about his history, however, the promise of answers long sought begins to tug at his attention, sewing the seeds of a new obsession that may risk putting him at odds with the others he's come to care for. As a series of dreams reminds Ashton of a past they'd rather forget, they're forced to make a choice: return to the found family they've been so desperate to find, or hunt down the secrets of his blood family that may finally give him the power to save those friends once and for all.

Answers lay just out of reach, including some he's been searching for all his life — but in the headlong rush to obtain them, he may end up with more than he bargained for.

Here is a lil beta reader secret for yall. When I got this beast of a chapter it used to be about twice as long but was eventually split into two. And it is still 19k words. Next chapter you're in for another long one and it's very delicious.

Ashton: (really quickly runs up to Fearne and gets right in her face) Fearne: (softly) Hi. Ashton: (seriously) I have a request. I have a very serious request. Fearne: Lay it on me. Ashton: If we survive this- Ashton: (opening up a small pouch full of weird-ass mushrooms) Fearne: (gasps) Ashton: I stole this off the weird cow one. Would you take half of these with me, and see whatever the fuck happens? Fearne: (completely on board) I absolutely will. Ashton: You’re the fucking best. Fearne: I can’t even believe you chose me for this fun adventure. Ashton: Who else? Honestly, you’re- I would do any fucking stupid thing you were ever down for. Fearne: Promise? Ashton: (kinda soft) Yeah. Ashton: I like you, and I’m bad at this, ‘cause I don’t think about the future, ever, but like- Fearne: I don’t either. Ashton: You’re fun to adventure with. Fearne: (she is so soft for them y’all) You’re fun to adventure with too. I’ll absolutely take those mushrooms with you. See what happens. Ashton: I have no idea what the fuck they’re going to do. Fearne: (puts her arms around them and gives them such a big hug)

guys please im literally begging yall to understand that "the gods should have interfered when i was a hurt and scared little kid begging them for help" and "the gods shouldnt be forcing themselves onto mortals by way of colonial incursion" are not contradictory statements. ashton's perspective is flawed and biased due to their own experiences sure but its not hypocritical.

Feeling increasingly useless and darkly fatalistic, Ashton’s mental state begins to devolve. As he leans on his relationship with Fearne for support, she makes a surprising move which shocks him into an unexpected and terrifying revelation.
