hi!! i just recently got into fromis_9 and had a few questions!! i noticed that in their dkdk promotion there’s only 8 members? i figured since their name is “fromis_9” that they’d have 9 members, and on their Instagram in their older posts there are 9, did something happen to the 9th member?

Hi there! You’re quite right, fromis_9 does have nine members however Jang Gyuri did not participate in DKDK promotions, choosing instead to appear on the survival show Produce 48.

In her application for PD48 Gyuri wrote that she felt like she was letting her team down with her lack of training/skills and that appearing on Produce 48 might help her improve. She also hoped that her appearance would help promote fromis_9 to a wider audience. 

Needless to say, this all came as a surprise to fans as Gyuri performed excellently in both Glass Shoes and To Heart eras so it was unclear why she would need to take a hiatus to improve her skills. It is probable that her appearance is simply a promotional tactic by Stone Music (who are a subsidiary of CJ E&M, the company that owns Mnet and produces PD48) to help get fromis_9 more exposure.

We expect that Gyuri will return to fromis_9 promotions when/if she is eliminated from the show. If she makes it to the final 12 the issue becomes more complicated as it is rumoured that the debut group will sign an exclusive contract - meaning they will be unable to promote with any other groups for a certain length of time.

Whatever happens, Gyuri remains a valued member of fromis_9 and we wish her the best in all her endeavours!
