But nothing, and no one, lives forever.
Not even gods. We are mighty, but we are not invulnerable. Death simply must work harder to catch us – another few hundred years, a few thousand perhaps, until from our fallen corpse a new god is born, like a molting, and whatever we once were disappears. Our likes and our loves gone, as a new order rises in our stead. Up until the days of humans and their dances, I had lived for a very long time. The surface of myself had become pocked and cracked and cratered, and I knew that if I let myself remain in that form any longer, I would disappear; a new Moon would take my throne, and it would no longer be my light that the animals and the forests bathed in. It would no longer be to me whom the dancers presented their finest arts, but some other lesser creature who would not be able to appreciate and love the same things I did; and such a thought I could not bear.
I would rather there were no Moon at all.

one of the bits in the spear cuts through water that made me go insane: Keema delighting in the simple joy of making Jun breakfast because it used to be the purest form of tenderness he bore witness to while working on a brothel-boat and now he has the luxury to be tender in ways he always yearned for but was denied and denied himself of. and then Jun ruins the moment by vomiting bc he remembered how their semi-omniscient tortoise travel buddy died

something something the Third Terror being the mirror image of Jun, with the Terror’s wolf’s head as a symbol of how he has no agency over his body vs Jun’s demon mask he wears first as a symbol of his royal blood and then to keep him safe from identification. the Terror being locked underground to guard prisoners vs Jun locked underground to guard the moon goddess. The Terror’s utter devotion to Keema from the very start through acts of violence vs Jun’s hesitation and emotional turmoil. Keema’s initial disgust with the Terror vs Keema’s persistence in face of Jun’s rejection. The most unwanted child vs the most beloved son. something something, starve that guard dog, and see what hunger does. it’s easy when you’re well-fed to talk of love.

yes “this is a love story down to the blade dented bone” is about Jun and Keema but it’s also about a moon goddess’ need for love from her people and the water’s love for the moon and the Third Terror’s desire for love and Lord Induun’s love for his grandchild and Raami’s love for Araya and Araya’s love for her family and Shan’s love for her father and the Third Terror’s love for Keema and (takes a deep breath bc this makes me insane)
